- Matvey began skating on June 2 at a training camp in Sochi. During the preparation, Viktor Nikolayevich Kudryavtsev really helped us. Recently, for 2-3 months, Matvey has grown by ten centimeters, so they prepared, trained with caution. But no matter how “careful”, on July 10, Matvey was injured, which is precisely connected with the “restructuring” of his body, active growth. Two weeks were treated. Doctors generally banned skating. So Matvey trains only 10 days. Nevertheless, he approached the rental in good shape, tried to show everything that he could at the moment.

At the end of last season, we began to try and make a quadruple toe. But for obvious reasons, we have now stopped. We restore the triple axel, after we move on to the quadruple toe. Matvey has a nice quadruple flip. In principle, he has many good triple jumps, which allows further improvement and their complication. But you need to do this carefully.

New programs put Sergey Komolov. Zhenya Vlasov worked them out, which helps us a lot. Choreography with Matvey is carried out by Ilona Protasenya. It is bearing fruit. Matvey has a beautiful ride. Sometimes in training, he rides so that turns his soul. He can do it. We want to combine such skating with the technique of programs ...

Matvey is a very diligent guy, emotional. Sometimes emotions overwhelm, and it needs to be “slowed down” a little. Very sensible. Studying well. Graduated with honors from 9th grade. But sometimes excessive information interferes. As I say, "woe is from the mind." There are times when you need to be simpler, not to dwell on the details, not dig deep, but just go and do.

Matvey has been trained a lot. He has the potential. By nature, he is so - "selfish." At times, it is not easy with him, especially now, when the transitional age has begun. In such periods, as I say, talent is proportional to character. But surmountable. We survive. You just need to continue to work, ”says Lyudmila Sapronova.

Matvei's last competition of the season (I think) from the Moscow Elder Age Championships in late Feb 2020. I just Google translated the title - I'm not very knowledgeable on Russian domestic competitions.

Glad to see another 3A and 4T (though not in the same programme). Matvei and Andrei Kutovoi caught my attention the most out of current Russian junior men during the last season, even though they don't have the highest technical arsenal currently, because of their excellent skating skills. Matvei has lovely posture that just gets better, plus he seems to be gradually adjusting to his growth spurt - there is a lot of potential in this kid :)

Coach interview
“Because of the quarantine, we went out on the ice only at the end of May, we began to train at our Moskvich rink,” says coach Lyudmila Sapronova . - We gradually got out of the state after the forced break, rolled out. We started working on a new free program, which was staged by Zhenya Vlasov. Matvey himself suggested the music - "Bohemian Rhapsody" by the group "Queen". We all worked on the production and program together. In my opinion, it turned out well, only the program needs to be worked out. The short "Per Te" was left. There was little time left before the rental. And in such a situation, changing both programs was probably not worth it.

Gradually restored the 3rd axel, 4th sheepskin coat. During training in Novogorsk, everyone saw that Matvey was doing it. But at the box office, he got worried, squeezed. After all, skating for juniors is like the first start, and the excitement can not go anywhere. But all the same, I believe that progress has been noticeable over these months. Let not as fast as you want, but Matvey is progressing. Over the summer, the guy got stronger. There is a gradual natural process of growing up. But the most important thing is that Matvey has a desire, he listens and works a lot.

The conditions on the Moskvich are excellent, there is plenty of ice. Both during and after the quarantine, Matvey and the guys were seriously engaged in general physical training. Our trainer in physical training Olga Mikhailovna Frolova "pumped" all muscles with Matvey, worked on all fronts. Choreography Matvey studied a lot with Ilona Ivanovna Protasenya. She gets along well with the guys. Naturally, Viktor Nikolaevich Kudryavtsev was present at the training. He constantly supervises us, keeps under control, observes, advises. Andrey Chuvilyaev helps to practice jumping on a fishing rod. There are many specialists. We connect everyone we can.

On the one hand, quarantine seems to have played a negative role. On the other hand, such a respite made it possible to work without haste, without twitching, calmly. And this is a positive point.

In the season we plan to skate among juniors until we stabilize the jumps. Matvey needs a jump volume, then there will be stability and confidence, he will do everything.

Matvey is a very responsible comrade, he wants everything to be fine. Therefore, after the performances, he always analyzes every movement, counts, records. Maybe sometimes you shouldn't bother like that, but he is. I think Matvey has potential, it's just that each berry has its own time, - says coach Lyudmila Sapronova.

Hope this is not too off-topic, but because I've been curious to learn about the younger assistant coaches who appear sometimes at competitions, I searched up Evgeny Vlasov, who seems to be assisting Liudmila Sapronova with coaching (and, it turns out, choreographed Matvei's new FP). You can spot either/both of them at Matvei's competitions - young guy and a lady who often wears a pink hat.

Here are some videos of Vlasov when he was still skating competitively, not too long ago as it turns out! (Searching Youtube in Cyrillic works wonders )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80YDJGnrskM [weird music cuts, but light and fun]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgKeJJFjdls [cool music, from the Caucasus maybe?]

I can spot Butsaeva and Sapronova by the boards, not sure which of them used to be his coach. If he originally skated at SSHOR Moskvich, it would make sense that he's now coaching there. He was still competing a/o 2016-17, so would have overlapped with Matvei's era, perhaps explaining their friendly vibe in K&C.

I can't find videos of Sapronova skating competitively... I guess competition video streams weren't really a thing in her time
