Original August 2018 post by The Finn:

This highly promising and very interesting team needs a thread here. She was born on 30 May 2003 and he was born on 11 October 1999. This season is their 3rd season together. Before teaming up with Devid she skated two seasons with Sergey Semko. Before teaming up with Liza he skated two seasons with Varvara Chekmeneva.

Last season they placed 12th at the Russian Junior Nationals but won silver at both the Russian Cup Final and the Youth Championships – Elder Age. Based on these results and the test skate event they were assigned to the 2018 JGP Slovakia were they skated superbly and were awarded with a silver medal. They also got a great personal best score of 152.42 points.

The Finn - I am also interested to see how they will do in their second event. Shevchenko/Eremenko will most likely win if they stay in that event and don't have any major mistakes, but Elizaveta and Devid will have other competition in the face of Lagouge/Rahier (whom I also want to finally do well) and maybe the Canadian teams (although those are less likely) there.

I liked them a lot at the first event. Elizaveta especially has a long way to go in terms of skating skills, but she reminded me of Elena Ilinykh with her looks and expressiveness somewhat.

The way I see it is that there is only one open spot for the JGP Final because if nothing major happens then these teams will most likely skate at the Final.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva / Nikita Nazarov
Arina Ushakova / Maxim Nekrasov
Sofia Shevchenko / Igor Eremenko
Greens
Marjorie Lajoie / Zachary Lagha

There are number of teams who can take that last spot and Shanaeva/Naryzhnyy should be one of the strongest candicates for the JGPF team number 6. Konkina/Vakhnov did really well today but since they will skate at JGP Canada where Lajoie/Lagha are practically guaranteed to win they most likely aren't in a better position than S/N after 1st JGP event. In any case, S/N are in a really good position now but obviously they will need at least silver from Slovenia if they want to skate at the Final.

There might be two. We don't know how the Greens will be since they were apparently dealing with an injury. They competed in June, then missed a comp in late July that they normally go to and all their training mates were at, then were pulled from the early JGP they were originally listed for. But if they are at full force then I agree.

But I think S/N have a good shot since their score seems strong.

I somehow passed up Nguyen/Kolesnik who did so well today at the Lithuanian GP and will also be in Slovenia with Elizaveta and Devid if nothing changes. Third place is starting to look more likely for S/N there. Of course, they may still be moved to another event.

PCS scores in Slovakia were really low throughout compared to Lithuania, they can definitely take silver in Slovenia.

At this point there are a couple of different ways it could play out. Four slots are basically spoken for:

1. Lajoie/Lagha - have already qualified, 1st + 2nd
2. Ushakova/Nekrasov - 1st, presumptively 1st in second event.
3. Shevchenko/Eremenko - 1st, presumptively 1st in second event.
4. Khudaiberdieva/Nazarov - 1st, presumptively 1st in second event.

Assuming the above, then you have the other silver medalists to date, Elizaveta and Devid, Nguyen/Kolesnik, and Ivanenko/Karpov (currently no second event scheduled), as well as Linz bronze medalists Kuts/Mikhailov (currently scheduled for Yerevan). We're only a couple of days from Ostrava and there's no indication that Russia is moving Davis/Smolkin out in favour of somebody else, in which case that event is throwaway in terms of finals qualifications beyond Khudaibedieva/Nazaraov's expected win.

If Elizaveta and Devid come second in Slovenia, then obviously they're in. If they come third behind S/E and N/K, then it will come down to what exactly happens in Yerevan to see who gets the sixth spot.

If Kuts/Mikhailov keep their second assignment somehow, then they'd have to come second (which is possible, but nobody knows what shape the Greens will be in assuming they even show up) and with a score high enough to beat Elizaveta and Devid in a tiebreaker points scenario -- and that would be a bit of a challenge, since the scoring in Linz was lower in Bratislava and they had an imperfect skate there, resulting in them being ten points behind based on first event scores. That's quite a lot of ground to make up.

However, if Ivanenko/Karpov get swapped in (which you'd frankly think they should be, since they're silver medalists), they can either come second and then get in ahead of Elizaveta and Devid on placements, or come third (let's say the Greens show up and are in good form) and then it would again come down to points. Ivanenko/Karpov are behind Elizaveta and Devid based on first event scores, but more narrowly (by about three points).

Russian Fed has replaced S/N with Ivanenko/Karpov at Slovenia. At the moment S/N doesn't have a 2nd event and it remains to be seen if Fed will replace Kuts/Mikhailov at the last JGP event of the season. Based on results one would think that they surely would but as we have seen results aren't the factors Russian Fed is interested in, so, it remains to be seen who will skate at the last event. And also, as we have seen in pairs discipline it means nothing to the Russian Fed that S/N could very well make it to the JGP Final if given 2nd JGP event. If political factors demand that the last spot needs to be given to a lesser team then that is what will happen.

They have been assigned to JGP Armenia now. On paper it looks like a better event for them than JGP Slovenia despite the fact that at the moment it looks like Greens will be there also.

No Greens in Armenia anymore but today's silver medalist Kazakova / Reviya will be there. S/N will have to beat them if they want to make it to the JGP Final.

The Finn - And Lagouge/Rahier are also competing there. I feel their scores should finally rise this season if they skate well. On the other hand, they (L/R) are in the last two JGPs which very likely means that there was some injury, so they may not be in good form. Perhaps S/N don't have to worry about them.

I did see that they will be there as well. JGP Slovenia should be a very high quality event since Shevchenko/Eremenko, Nguyen/Kolesnik and Ivanenko/Karpov will be there also. I can't see the french team beating the best two teams there but maybe they could get the bronze. If so then a silver at JGP Armenia could be enough for them to make it to the JGP Final if their scores are high enough.

In any case, the last two events should be the two most high quality events of the season and also the most interesting ones.

The Finn - I was not thinking so much about Lagouge/Rahier's chances of getting into the final, but rather about Elizaveta and Devid. But, if Kazakova/Reviya will win silver in Armenia, it probably won't matter anyway if S/N beat the french or not, as Nguyen/Kolesnik will very likely gain the fifth (or forth, depending on if they come in second again or beat Shevchenoko/Eremenko) spot.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that the last team to qualify will be either Shanaeva/Naryzhnyy, Kazakova/Reviya, Ivanenko/Karpov or Lagouge/Rahier. I would think that the first two teams will have the best chances but you never know. In any case, S/N will definitely need to beat Kazakova/Reviya in Armenia.

I really liked Elizaveta and Devid at JGP Bratislava. I hope they can get silver at Armenia, but I believe they can! I noticed that scores at Ostrava were much higher than at Bratislava, but even so Kazakova/Reviya were only ahead of them by two points. And Elizaveta and Devid have probably improved since Bratislava as well.
