Noémie BODENSTEIN competed in Ladies’ Singles for Switzerland. She was born on 26th December 2002 in Köln, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Between 2012 and November 2018 she trained with Stéphane Lambiel and the Skating School of Switzerland in Champéry, Switzerland; before that she was coached by Peter Grütter and Jacqueline Tomasini. As of November 2018 she divides her time between Toronto, where she trains with Tracy Wilson and Ernest Pryhitka, Oberstdorf, where she works with Michael Huth, and Lausanne.

She was Swiss Junior National Champion 2017, placed fourth in the Swiss Senior National Championships 2018 (fifth in the short program and third in free skating), and was the 2018 Cup of Tyrol Junior Ladies bronze medallist. At the start of the 2018-19 season she became the first Swiss junior lady to skate in two consecutive JGP seasons since Yasmine Kimiko Yamada and Tanja Odermatt in 2014. In 2020 she skated her first clean free skate to win the women's silver medal at the Swiss Elite National Championships. Her programs were choreographed by Salome Brunner and Michael Huth, and her skating combined fluid athleticism and clean, contemporary lines.

She retired on 19 August 2021 at the age of 18 due to a chronic, previously undiagnosed hip injury requiring surgery.

Noémie is trilingual, speaking French, German and English. You can hear her name pronounced by fellow Francophone Phillipe Candeloro here.

I really loved Noemie‘s dress! That pink looks fabulous on her. Unfortunately she had a few falls and mistakes but I‘m hoping to see her improve over the season. :)

It's a very pretty dress, and very appropriate for the music which is about the jeweller Tiffany. :)

It wasn't her most confident skate, but she's scored over 91 with a version of that program that wasn't quite as technically difficult as this one (no flip-loop combo and a 3T instead of the second 3F) so I'm sure she'll be up there again soon enough. And there were some nice surprises in her protocol - level 3 on the step sequence, all the jumps except for the loop were fully rotated, and there were no edge queries on any of the lutzes (or flips, but it was the lutz edges that were giving her trouble last season).

It seems to be a thing for many skaters - when they're concentrating on one element of a jump, it knocks something else out for a bit. But that's what juniors is for, after all, getting all the pieces pulled together. And she has another JGP coming up in Ostrava too!

(And Ted was right. A) she's a strong kid, and training at altitude helps, and B) she's a very nice skater indeed, she has lovely lines).

Update to Noémie's competitive plans this season! Swiss Ice Skating has posted its international competition schedule for the 18-19 season, and it looks like following her second JGP in Ostrava on 26-29 September, Noémie will transition to competing at Senior level internationally.

She's currently scheduled to compete at the Volvo Cup in Riga in November, make her Challenger series debut at Golden Spin in December, and skate in the Bavarian Open in February 2019.

I'm really proud of what Noémie accomplised at JGP Ostrava, and I hope she is too. :) Not just a season's best but a personal best in international competition for the SP, and SB's for both the free skate and overall score. And once again, no edge queries on any of the lutzes! I know it's hard to fix an edge issue on lutzes, especially for girls and women, so major kudos there.

The changes to her Dream Maker program this season are both ambitious and beautiful, and have already helped her take the StSq up from a level 2 to a level 3 - it's no surprise that this early in the season the starts of both programs are a bit wobbly, as she's visibly working so hard to get the opening 3Lz3T combination happening under pressure that it's knocking everything else a bit off balance (hence the overrotations that Ted Barton noticed). It will come! And it made me happy to hear Ted offer such warm praise of Noémie's technical strengths and her presentation on the ice, and her ability to rebalance herself and get the later jumping passes working in the FS. I'm looking forward to seeing any changes she's made to the choreographic sequence the next time she's at a competition with a livestream, too.

In addition to that, Noémie achieved the first in a series of benchmarks to become a candidate for Switzerland's second ladies' spot at Europeans: an SP TES of 24+ and TSS of 44+ in international junior or senior competition (the others are: a second such SP score, meeting the ISU tech minimums in senior international competition before 16 December, and making the podium at Elite Nationals). It's a lot to ask of a girl just starting her first senior season, but she's clearly set herself up to give it a good shot!

Next up, the Trophée Romand (Swiss Cup event) in a couple of weekends' time...

Just realised I didn't do a writeup for Volvo Cup! Busy, busy. Anyway, unfortunately Noémie's first senior competition didn't go as well as she probably hoped, as she had to withdraw from the competition with the FS already underway (I hope due to illness not injury, she was coughing rather a lot in the k'n'c after the SP). Nevertheless, in her short program she landed the 3F2T combination that eluded her all last season, made the ISU-set TES SP minimums for Europeans and increased her PCS scores from the JCP, so well done on all those points! And all her jumps were called fully rotated, even the 3Lz with a hard fall, which is great.

Noémie's next competition will be the Swiss-Cup event Coupe du Rhone in two weekends' time, and then after that comes her first Challenger series event, Golden Spin at Zagreb. Good luck!

According to a new interview at Absolute Skating, Noémie is no longer being coached by Stéphane Lambiel, but her ISU bio hasn't been updated, so no info on her new coach yet. She didn't skate at Coupe de Rhone last weekend, but so far is still listed for Golden Spin of Zagreb, meaning that she should be able to get a complete Senior score on the Swiss PB list there and qualify to skate at Nationals.

Good luck at Golden Spin and in your new skating home Noémie!

Guess who just qualified for Swiss Nationals next weekend? - not as high up the list as she'd like, I'm sure (14th out of 16* available places), but Noémie came back from a nervous SP and a couple of popped jumps with a season's best score in the free skate, a good solid triple flip, some nice combinations and an adjusted choreographic sequence to look happier than I've seen her at a competition since the start of the season. And best of all, a small but real smile in the kiss and cry! :yahoo: Such a change from the JGP.

With a new arm variation in her sit spin and a nice transition added going into the axel in her SP, plus some changes to the layout of her free, I'm already seeing shifts and developments in Noémie's skating, which is wonderful. Transition periods are always rocky, but she's rising to the challenge and this SB will be a good confidence boost for her before Nationals. Best of luck for next week, kid! :cheer:

*Belated ETA: Sorry, memory failure there, there are 18 total places available not 16!

(One day I'll find out who her new coach is, but today was not that day.)

Noemie and Noah have officially moved to TCC and train in Toronto when they can (Noemie answered this question on instagram). When not in Canada, they have gone back to training with Peter Grutter, who was sitting with them in the KnC at Golden Spin. http://www.absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=interviews&id=2018lambiel

Oh, thank you! I'm not on Instagram so I can't see that sort of thing! (Maybe I should sign up...) The person I saw in the KnC with Noémie after her two skates didn't look like Peter Grütter though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2Qyamu5MIE. Maybe a colleague?

That makes sense of why Noémie skated at Minto under the aegis of the TCC earlier in the year, though. I'll keep an eye out for her there. :)

Well this was unexpected and pretty cool! Last Saturday Noémie and her brother Noah were, along with the Cool Dreams synchro team, invited guest performers at the Club des Patineurs Tramelan’s annual gala! They performed to an audience of approximately 600, and going by the thank-you note Noémie posted in her Instagram stories they appear to have had a blast doing it.

No footage of more than a few seconds has surfaced, but if any pops up on YouTube at some point I’ll add a link in here later. The gala did get a little write-up in the local paper, though – the Journal du Jura – which the club posted to its Facebook page. Let’s see how my French translation skills hold up...

“The Bodensteins displayed their talents first individually, then together. All of a sudden the level of skating leapt up, from simple jumps to doubles and even triples, punctuated with fast and complex spins. Their display of excellent technique delighted and fired up the audience.”

(With thanks to my ancient Collins Paperback French-English dictionary)

A poster on Facebook also praised the "beautiful fluidity" of their skating. What a nice way for sister and brother to end the season!

And whoops, I just realised I never did a post for Swiss Nationals (the time gap was horrendous, though, so I couldn’t watch; no wonder I forgot). As they were held just one week after Golden Spin, it’s not surprising that Noémie hadn’t had time to shake off the collywobbles that were troubling her there*, but she fought on through, advanced by one warmup group from the short program to the free and placed higher than she qualified, which is all good in itself and also shows a ton of strength of character for a sixteen-year-old kid. She’s had a bit of a tough time this season, and next year if I’ve figured the dates out right she’ll be doing the final year of her certificat de maturité while competing, which is also a big ask, but if anyone can cope I think she can. :hap10:

*I suspect, looking at the Golden Spin video of her SP, she’s been working on a bit of a technique revamp to help with her 3Lz3T, and that’s always tricky...and then there was the injury at Volvo Cup to deal with too. You can see big improvements in the security of her 2A already, though, and some fancy new tweaks to her spins.

The junior selection trials for the 2019-20 season were held on 1 March this year - retroactive chookas, kid! - but the teams generally aren’t posted until quite a bit later because the senior team is selected after the end of the complete competitive season (though at least the juniors get told their results earlier). I’ll be braving the horrendous mess that the USP website has lately turned into for details around the start of May...

ETA: I'll be interested to see which choreographer/s she works with this year; hopefully she'll have both a new FS and a new SP (the Dream Maker FS is lovely but two season old and the Variations on the Kanon SP is decent choreographically but the music doesn't really frame her power and fluidity effectively. I'd love to see her skate to something with more orchestral oomph and a bit of a modern touch...

Just because Noémie is too old by six days to be eligible to compete at the Winter Youth Olympics 2020 :)disapp:) doesn't mean she can't still be involved! She recently starred in an advertisement aiming to raise awareness (and possibly funds?) for the Fondation ESJ (Economie Sport et Jeunesse), an organisation promoting language exchanges between Swiss high school students in different cantons around the framework of the Winter Youth Olympics.

You can find it on YouTube here, and unlike her Golden Spin SP, I doubt this one will be deleted any time soon. :)

Swiss Ice Skating has named its teams for 2019-20 (and got its website back into something resembling a useable state, even if those menus are ghastly), and Noémie is on the Junior National Team for the third consecutive year. :hap10:

The Junior and Advanced Novice teams have been combined at National, A Reserve and B reserve levels this season, which is why the list looks enormous, but I'm not sure how many of the girls listed are age-eligible for the JGP except for Noémie and Anais Coraducci (maybe Kimmy Repond and Sabella Gowrié?). Presumably test skates for that will be held about a week before the first event as usual...these Swiss and their to-the-minute timing...

ETA: As part of the SIS delegation at Swiss Olympic's 2019 Tous les Talents a Tenero training camp.

The Swiss entries for the JGP have been updated following Saturday's test skates, and Noémie is now skating at Courchevel! :hap10: She probably won't get another slot - SIS rules state that any skater who reaches the free skate at Junior Worlds gets two JGP spots by right in the following year if they're still age-eligible (Anaïs Coraducci is) while the remaining spots go one by one - but three years of JGP spots in a row in a comparatively large competitive group for a small federation is quite an achievement.

(If she does get another spot it most likely will be Poland or Italy, as those are the other events where Switzerland has entries in men's singles too. SIS is good about wrangling family logistics.)

Can't wait to see new program/s for her this year. I checked, but her bio hasn't been updated with any info about them yet. It will be interesting to see who her choreographer is, too...

UPDATE: SIS has put up their international assignments PDF. Which is barely readable.

Noémie's international assignments for 2019-20 are: JGP Courchevel (Aug 21-24), JGP Gdansk as substitute OR Black Sea Ice Cup if she's not subbed in at Gdansk (Sept 19-22), Golden Bear (Oct 23-27), and Cup of Tyrol (Nov 8-13) in Seniors. Given that timetable, I suspect she'll do the Trophee Romand (Oct 11-13) as her Swiss-Cup entry.

Argh, that freak fall on the spin! She was heading for a PB there until that. A bit nervous, but all three jumping passes landed, including the combo (only the second time she's completed the combo in an international SP) - and wow, the new version of Variations on the Canon suits her so much better than the previous version! It's light and fluid and actually lets her use her speed and power and graceful arms effectively. And the different music cut makes for a better contrast with Mariage d'Amour than I was worried it might. Two tinkly piano tracks in one season = a bit much.

Lovely glide, and Ted was right about her power and speed. Mushroom on butter indeed! That's her highest season-opener score, and also the highest PCS she's ever got in an international SP by some way. Everything in the 5s, even transitions, and a 5.54 for interpretation! Plus two Level 4 spins that look smoother and faster than last year. And this is just her first competition of the season. Plenty of room to grow into this program.

Most of all - she looks so much happier and more confident than this time last year, and more secure in her movement. Even with a mistake, she just laughed it off after she came off the ice. It's so nice to see. Difficult last season and all, I think this coaching change has been really good for her.

ETA: Scroll down for protocol. I approve of Judge 5.

ETA 2:  Noémie's SP video has had over 1,000 views in less than 24 hours!

Oh, that was lovely. And an official personal best in the FS by almost 10 points to prove it. Only 6 points behind her actual free skate PB, and in the first competition of the season! Definite official PB for the competition, only four or so points behind her actual PB. I am so happy for her! :hap10: (And glad I was able to stay awake long enough to watch.) Beautiful, calm, soft, flowing choreography that shows the huge development she's made in components over the past six months (reflected in a lovely PCS mark - not quite a PB, but very close) and a good jump layout. With more competitive exposure those jump landings will settle further, too, and the choreo will cohere even more. I think training at altitude for that week just before test skates probably helped her deal with the altitude at Courchevel better too - it's 1,850 metres above sea level according to Paul Peret on Twitter!

She's not quite met the major SIS internal requirement to be considered for a slot at Europeans or Junior Worlds - that's a total of 70 TES across a single competition - but she's very close. Black Sea Ice Cup for that? ETA: I remembered this wrong! The number is 64 total TES across a single competition for Junior Worlds - she's home with room to spare and eligible for JW selection after the first competition of the season!

Plus, you know. What Ted said. I am so delighted that he saw tonight the same thing I do in her - poise, grace, calm (when she's in her zone) and quiet strength coupled with growing artistic ability. And a touch of something queenly in her bearing and lines (it's late, I'm happy and muzzy-headed, let me be poetic). She was never going to be an early bloomer, but give her a couple of years more* to come into her full power and she's going to be something truly special. But this season is going to be all about consolidating those PCS gains, stabilising the jumps and rebuilding her confidence.

*Including, among other things, time to finish her certificat de maturité, after which she'll have more time available for training each week, which will help with firming up the jump landings. One must be pragmatic about these things.

ETA: I was too sleepy to look this up last night, but: both Junior Worlds tech minimums achieved! Also both Euros minimums, which don't count internationally because this was a junior competition, but may assist in internal decision-making as the season goes on (making those in senior competition will be the goal for Cup of Tyrol, I guess).

Nice Instagram post with some photos from Noémie reflecting on Courchevel. :) But oh dear, she was skating injured last season - maybe even from before Volvo Cup, given she had to withdraw from the 2018 Junior Worlds selection skate. Poor kid. That's a lot to deal with at fifteen/sixteen.

But it looks like she's had good injury management and is fully recovered now. I still can't get over the level of progress she's made from last season's JGP skates to this. And I keep coming back to this running threes-loop-turn-spreadeagle moment in her SP...it's nice and quite smooth already, and with the loop a little more secure it will be stunning (she used the same entry to the loop in her FS, but a different exit, turn to twizzle, which is cool too). But mostly it strikes me because it's a kind of low-key complexity that her previous choreographies didn't include, and it speaks to an huge development in skill, control and confidence over the past six months or so. And people are noticing. It's not the kind of flashy transitional work that's in fashion right now, but they are transitions, and she is doing them well. Plus there's the overall growth in artistry that stems from greater body confidence and recovered strength (flexible back, soft arms and hands, and also it seems she's finished growing, which must help!). Her SP video has over 2,300 views already, and it's been less than a week. She's touched a chord in people with that program, errors and all. :luv17:

I can't wait to see where she'll be in six months, never mind a year.

A good return to competition for Noémie at Golden Bear last weekend, with 10th place overall (11/9) and an SP score only about .10 points off her international PB, not to mention a significant PB in PCS. She had some difficulties in the FS, but still broke 120 overall and passed her last season's PB, and it looks like she's aiming to increase her jump content base value before starting the Senior phase of her season at Volvo Cup in two weeks' time.

Not that it was the greatest weekend for a competition, with the clocks in Europe going back overnight between the SP and FS!

Coming up after Volvo Cup, she has Zueri-Leu Cup (Swiss-cup event) and then Swiss Nationals in early December, so I suspect she'll be based in Oberstdorf for the next little while after a term in Toronto. Either way, it'll be cold!

 I know Volvo Cup is only a Senior B and the score is therefore not official, but who cares? That was a spectacular PB for Noémie in the Short Program. PB on all fronts: TES 26.83, PCS 22.80, total 49.63. Almost 4.5 points above her official PB! :yahoo: That's got to be such a confidence boost.

So she's now got her Euros minimums for both programs, IIRC*, and is well on the way to getting the internal SIS requirement of 70.5+ TES in a single competition to qualify for Euros as well. And it was a lovely skate, calm and confident and secure (but unfortunately I am technically deficient and have no idea how to put it on YouTube). So happy for her. :)

*I remembered wrongly. She had the SP minimums from last season (but now she has better ones); it's the FS minimums she'll be aiming for tomorrow, and the SIS internal requirement of 70.5+TES across a single competition.
