Hopefully there's not a thread on this anywhere already, but figured i'd see who else follows it like i do! i really enjoy women's artistic and rhythmic gymnastics since it has some similarities to skating. I usually watch all the big broadcasts here in the US on NBC and the Olympic Channel.

Who do you love watching?
Who are you excited about being a possibility for making 2020?
What about worlds coming up this October?
is Simone Biles really human? (jk )

I originally come from gymnastics. It's my first love, so to speak.

My team are the Russian ladies and I'm especially excited about Mustafina's post-baby come back these days. It would be wonderful if she made the World team. Melnikova has really won me over, too. She was such a mess last year, and always so unhappy with her performances. And now she's regained all her confidence from her junior days it seems. It's great to see. Eremina is wonderful as well. Hopefully her back will hold up during her comeback. Generally I fall in love with Russian juniors and they burn out before turning senior, lol. The life of a fan... [emoji28]

I never ever watch NBC, they are awful. BBC used to be great, but they've gotten a lot more biased as well with the success of the British ladies. But still miles better than whatever crap the NBC is talking about. The commentator from Euros (from the UEG livestream) was amazing! Hopefully we'll hear from him again.

I give Mustafina SO much credit for coming back after having a baby. I can't even imagine how difficult that would be and the new things you'd have to adapt to from your body undergoing all those changes. She deserves a medal just for that.

Is Komova still competing? I haven't seen much of her in a while...i always loved watching her lines, she was gorgeous.

and i do agree, NBC is awful with commentating not only in FS but gymnastics too. Tim Daggett is the equivalent to Johnny and Tara. I'd pick BBC over any of them anytime!

Well, Komova was training for another comeback, which she and the RusFed actually hyped a lot (#KomovaIsBack). She won AA bronze at the Russian Cup earlier this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZTeLw7gxNs (same as Mustafina's comeback competition) However, her difficulty wasn't there yet and she had some minor injury again before Euros.
This weekend she posted some cryptic stuff on Instagram about being able to leave something without regretting it. So who knows if she's still training...

so will Mustafina at least be at worlds? The Russians who competed at worlds last year were pretty underwhelming...but then again pretty much all the women were.

Should she be healed enough when the selection takes place she'll make the Worlds team I'd say.

I wouldn't call the Russians from last year underwhelming, and if you do, this year could be even more underwhelming. Last year had Paseka who won Worlds, Eremina who won two medals, Melnikova as a good AA prospect and Ilyankova as a great event specialist. The two who won medals (Paseka and Eremina) are out this year. And who is there to replace them? Simakova is not as good as Eremina in the AA, same goes for Alexeeva. Akhaimova doesn't come close to Paseka on vault and her floor has regressed a lot since last year, so no medal chances there either. Perebinosova is a good bars worker but not as good as Ilyankova. Melnikova getting her mojo back will be the one thing that will definitely be better than last year. And Mustafina is still a question mark for sure. If she makes the Worlds team, I think it'll be as a UB/BB specialist instead of AA. She can win a medal in both events but it won't be easy. So all in all, if you think last year was underwhelming, you sholdn't get your hopes up too high this year.

After a heavy favorite Simone it is pretty much very close. Morgan Hurd probably will get that second spot of USA for AA final. I would say there are more others 7-8 worthy candidates for silver and bronze this year. If at least half of them hit it and go clean with just a minor mistakes.. well... the whole thing for medals will be very close this time.

I'm a bit of a fair-weather fan of gymnastics. I'll watch on TV, but it has to be served up to me. I don't do fan boards or anything like that.

But this whole Biles comeback has me a bit captivated. As far as the AA title, I can't imagine anyone getting close. She also appears to be a virtual lock for Vault and Floor Gold, as well as the betting favorite on Beam. Some are speculating that with her upgraded difficulty and execution, she's not out of the running for a bars medal, too.

This is a totally dominant athlete. Very impressive.

That said, I'm told that balance beams, like ice, are slippery. You don't win medals on paper. So, good luck to her.

it really is amazing what she's done and is still doing. i just really, really hope she doesn't get burned out or injured...being at the top as long as she has has to be really exhausting. hoping for the best the next couple years leading up to tokyo.

unless she makes several mistakes, simone is absolutely a lock for AA gold. i think if both riley and morgan do well in prelims its going to be close for that 2nd spot.

Biles is a force of nature.

I just saw some of Aliya's podium training. She is back in business with her elegance (and a newborn kid). I can't remember anyone of her elite level to make a comeback after pregnancy and still be relatively good and competitive. She is my always problematic favorite.

If Aliya won't get any medal - this World's is officially canceled. I'm sorry but I don't make the rules. :furious:

I think Riley may have the edge over Morgan for the second spot, but they have been pretty neck and neck. I am still waiting to see who the alternate will be. I think it will be Ragan, but I think they are still deciding between her and Kara Eaker. I love Kara's beam, but I don't understand why the team needs a beam specialist.

SO glad the original poster started this thread. I have been looking for somewhere to talk gymnastics :)
