Today's the debut of RD at Finlandia Trophy. Apart from one couple, all the rest (10) are European duos. For some of them it's already their second event, but other will start their international 2018/19 season there. I'm looking forward to Stepanova/Bukin's programs and, generally, the fight among the 3 Russian couples. It will be also interesting to see where the Spanish will be placed. There are also two couples representing Hungary: Anna Yanowskaya/Adam Lukacs and Emily Monaghan/Ilias Fourati. I don't remember two Hungarian ice dance skaters competing at the same time.

During the Nora Hoffman/Attila Elek time, for a couple of seasons, there was also Elek's brother Gregory (who is now an ISU Technical Specialist and member of the Ice Dance Technical Committee) skating with Zsuzsanna Nagy. They both did 2006 Euros.

Is there a video of Yanovskaya/Lukacs FP? Or Smart/Diaz FP from Finlandia? The later are looking great this season.

Zagorski/Guerreiro's FD is Blues for Klook. So we'll have internal blues battle in Russia between them and Stepanova/Bukin. We'll have to wait for their first direct confrontation, but in the meantime enjoy Tiffani and Jonathan and other European couples in the first GP event. Skate America is about to start :) What excitement!!!!

I really like the choices Z/G have made this year. Super!

It's awful. Angelique is only 18 and she decided to retire so early :( I hoped that French Fed would release her but I see it didn't happen

She's being very dramatic, isn't she? We all knew that Russia would never release Drozd. So it would be up to the French to release her and that wasn't going to happen. What made her feel that she and Drozd was the soup already, after trying out for how long, maybe three or four months?

Give her a few months she'll come out of retirement with another European ice dancer.

Drozd in the meantime ought to beg Ilinykh to skate with him and ask Zhulin to be their coach. He knows how to manage tough students.

I don't think she is overly dramatic. Few months ago she ended her partnership and I guess she hoped that current empty ice dance French field would be some argument for Federation to let her go. Honestly who would she skate with? Also whoever she would find abroad that person would have to change federations anyway. Also both she and Pavel were really satisfied with what came from their short cooperation and perspectives looked great. If I had a choice between waiting till my fed will mercifully let me go (or find me some random guy) and moving on with my life I'd probably did the same thing she did. Maybe she will come back maybe not. I just hope that she will find some path for herself and be happy.

I agree that with their abilities Elena and Pavel would be team with great quality but I have doubts about Zhulin. His teams tend to stagnate after initial progress and after a while they stand behind. I really like what I see from U/N but Gorshkov doesn't have any notable senior students. Maybe Krylova would help them.

I am fine with agreeing to disagree about Abashkina.

Zhulin, OTOH does great things when he has a great team. Teams plateau or hit a brick wall because of their own issues. He's no magician there is only so much he can do with his teams.

As per Krylova I shudder at the less than stellar material she let P/M show this season.

Actually the best material coming out of Russia regardless of their dire misses at times, actually comes from either Svinin and Zhuk or Zhulin and this says a LOT!!

She also recently posted that she turned the corner on a pretty severe eating disorder a couple of years ago and was proud of her improvement since then. If the French federation was trying to play the same kind of ultra-stressful head games that they did with Bruno Massot, or even just looking like they were going to try it, she may not have felt it was worth jeopardising her recovery for. Call their bluff and walk away with her health intact; it's their loss, and she's free to get on with her life however she likes.

Gorshkov might not have any notable senior students now but He certainly had notable senior students in the past like Albena Denkova/Maxim Staviski, Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin, Ekaterina Riazanova/Ilia Tkachenko or Nóra Hoffmann/Maxim Zavozin.

I think he is more than capable of coaching a senior ice dance team. I hope U/N don't leave him when they turn senior.

I wish Tiff and Jon would be scored more appropriately. I really like their vibe and colour on ice and they have very good skating skills, much better than Bukins for example.
In fact both Sinitsina and Katsapalov and Tiff and Jon have better skills than Bukin/Stepanova.

Why did Abachkina & Thauron split in the first place? I also don't understand why she dropped the first guy she paired up with after Thauron so quickly - they looked OK for a very new pair at the one french event they did together, and it must have been clear from the start that getting a release would be a long and arduous process from either Federation; I think both Russia & France have a claim to say they've invested a lot in both skaters and wouldn't throw that away easily.

I guess they decided they couldn’t work together anymore.
Also results are not everything and despite looking ok in an event training together would result in some tension and split after short time.

There was another guy between Thauron and Drozd? Or do you mean Drozd?

She had an American partner for a little bit there. They did a summer competition in France and were listed for the JGP but then pulled out and she was trying out with Drozd.
