Here is my interpretation of the nice interview with Danill and his mother from the publication "Moskovskiy Figurist":

Hope is in our eyes

Daniil Samsonov: “I want to go down into the history of figure skating”

Daniil Samsonov: Date of birth: July 13, 2005 (Moscow). Candidate Master of Sports
Clubs:
CS&O Sambo-70 (Khrustalny branch), ShOR Moskvich, RBM No4.
Trainers: Eteri Tutberidze, Sergey Dudakov, Daniil Gleichengauz, Alexander Shubin, Nataliya Dubinskaya, Olga Levina, Valeriy Meshkov.
Results:
Championship of Russia among juniors (2019) - 1st place.
The first winter International Sports Games "Children of Asia" (2019) - 1st place.

- Daniil, how do you deal with the fame that has piled on you after winning the Russian Championship? How do you feel about the fact that fans now expect victories from you? Doesn't it crush you?
D: No. It rather motivates me. I try to give my best in every training so as not to disappoint those fans who rely on me. Their hope is not annoying me, but only spurs me on. I understand that everyone was waiting for victories in our men's single skating, so much attention to me and to all the guys in general. This interest is connected with the hope that we will be able to return to the world elite.
- The public sometimes knows no bounds in its adoration, and the press is constantly looking for sensational hot news. Are you mentally prepared for the fact that your life will be the subject of gossip among all kinds of strangers?
D: I think that my family will support me, and the coaches will tell me how to react to some things, how to communicate with fans and journalists, and will teach me how to cope with some problems from this area. As for the press: I already had a case after the Championship, when “my” words that I didn’t say were put in the headline of the news. So in this regard, I already understand everything. I am not so naive to think this won't happen again.
- Do you have the realization that you belong to that generation of skaters who have mastered all quadruple jumps, and this in childhood?
D: I did not think about it, but you are probably right. In our group already some boys - Yegor Rukhin, Gosha Kunitsa - are jumping quadruples.
- If the quadruple jump ceases to be exotic, due to what will your generation win?
D: Due to quality. Complex entrances and exits, some quadruples will be put in the second part of the program to get an increase of 10%. Perhaps someone will risk doing cascades with quadruple jumps. I think this is for real.
- Will your set of elements change in the new season? Will something be added to the complexity or will you stay with the same content and work only on quality?
D: Over the season, I learned all four jumps. We wrapped them up tight, with regard to later exits. Since the solo jump in the short program for juniors changes every season, this year there will be a Rittberger instead of a Flip. It will be a triple, because the juniors in the short can not jump quadruples. But there will be a triple Axel and a cascade of Lutz-Toeloop. Naturally, in order to earn those plus marks from the judges, I was given complex entrances and exits everywhere. In the free program, we are going to insert two quadruple jumps in the second half of the program - from triple cascades.
- Will you modify something on your spins?
D: My spins are all on level four, so we will work on their quality. This season, for juniors in the short program the Chinyang jump has been announced. We made it a little more complicated compared to last year. Eteri Georgiyevna said that the position I was doing it in was on the verge of whether or not it would be counted. We now have made such a position it will be counted for sure. But to land it 'on top' turned out to be harder.
- If we talk about your training in such characteristics as strength, speed, endurance, flexibility, etc., what are you mainly working on now?
D: This is happening comprehensively and constantly. We work on endurance during training and at warm-ups; we carry out tasks in series of several run throughs. We are working on acceleration. I work on some qualities either in physical exercise class or on ice, some - only during choreography.
- I noticed that you do not have a very tight wrap in your quadruple jumps, and at the same time they are all fully rotated. Does that mean you still have a margin if you can do quads so relaxed? What do trainers say?
D: In fact, the coaches make comments about this every training session. We are working on it. I do exercises during special physical exercise lessons and check every jump, but so far this is slow going. Fully rotated jumps are the result of me having a good jump height since childhood and a good spin.
- What programs will you show in the new season?
D: We decided not to change the short program "Rain in Your Brown Eyes" because the audience liked it and the judges rated it very well. The costume, however, was slightly altered because I am a little older. I’m not growing very fast yet, somewhere around 2-3 centimeters a year. And as for the free, it will be a program to the music of Josh Groban, his composition "Per Te".
- Last season I was surprised by the choice of music for the free program, because Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue”, in my opinion, is an adult story. Was it hard for you to ride under it?
D: The coaches explained to me how I should perform this composition. We discussed all my movements, character, image. The main task was to make the movements wide, strong, confident, powerful.
- During the skating of programs, what do you concentrate on more - on the image or on the technical elements?
D: In simple words, I can not answer. When you need to do elements, I am focused on them: for everything to work out, I must approach the element with technique. And beautiful. When there are some musical accents or connecting steps, tracks, choreography and image are more important. Of course, when I’ve already made my jumps, I can direct all my strength to the program, to emotions. You feel such freedom and strength that your legs skate by themselves. It doesn’t matter if I skate a competition or train, in any case, you need to be concentrated, do everything distinctly.
- Daniil, what do you think, are the qualities you need to work on harder so you can justify the hopes that we spoke about at the beginning?
D: I need to learn to express my emotions brighter. In the previous and the year before last, I had such programs in which it was necessary to light up to the fullest, and the coaches told me endlessly about this, but I was very shy. In addition to expressing emotions, adding as much as possible to any element. If everyone will do quadruples, you need to raise the difficulty and do something unusual.
- I know that today you had your first training session with Shoma Uno. What are your impressions of meeting him on the same ice?
D: Very motivating. Just a Japanese god, especially in skating. It caught my eye and remembered his landings low in his legs, the work of his knees. Soft cat-like sliding and very high speed. Also he rides without respite. It was interesting to watch Shoma and it was interesting to repeat after him. I want to ride like him.

Lottery ticket

- How has your life changed after the transition to Tutberidze?
D: It felt like I won the lottery.
- What do you think made her to take you into her group?
D: I think she saw my desire to work, saw a perspective in me. The first weeks I was on trail, I gave it all my best. I think Eteri Georgiyevna saw that I can work the way everyone in her group works.
- And how does the group work?
D: Non-stop. All rush here and there. Nobody works on 'half a leg'. Everyone wants a result.
- You were worried that day when you found out that you were going to see Eteri Tutberidze for appraisal?
D: I don’t even know, I was little then. We came from Velikiy Novgorod from the Championship of Russia for younger age. We arrived by the morning train, there were no trainings that day, I rested all day and did my homework. Already in the evening, before going to bed, my mother said that tomorrow we were going to the appraisal. I went to bed as usual, knowing that tomorrow would be just like any ordinary training and I had to show everything I can.
- And how did it happen that you then showed something you didn't know was in you?
D: When Daniil Markovich said: “In our group, double jumps do not count,” I realized this is true and I must jump triples. Before that, I only tried Salchows - it is the easiest triple, and I never jumped a Flip, so I was a little afraid. The first time I fell, but I then realised I can do it. Went in and did it.
- Why did you choose the Flip, and not that same Salchow?”
D: Because I jumped the toepick double jumps the most, entered into the toepick assist well, that's why I decided - Flip.
- And what was the reaction of the coaches?
D: Yes, well, there was no reaction, everyone continued to ride. They just began to help me during the training, correcting some mistakes.
- Daniel, due to what your group has such an amazing result? Maybe there is some secret?
D: Everyone asks about this secret. There is a secret - it is Eteri Georgiyevna. She herself works a lot, always on skates. When I joined the group, I began to do everything more often in training than I did before. No one forced anybody, you just have to understand why you are here. Anya Shcherbakova and I were the smallest in the group, but still worked with full power. I think this is very correct, if someone really wants a result and is ready to work for it, the trainers will help to achieve it: they will correct, clean, add, improve, and decorate.
- Star disease - what is it, in your opinion? They say it's deadly.
D: Probably, like when you won a tournament in a special program for younger age and start to feel like a champion in front of everyone, to think that you are the coolest and you have no equal. I think if a person is predisposed to star fever, this will manifest itself very early. All characters are different.
- Have you ever experienced such feelings? How do you feel about praise and enthusiasm?
D: It pleases me to be praised, but I do not dwell on it. Praise is needed to understand I am doing everything right. The main thing is not to wait for admiration and enthusiasm as a reason in itself. The same Championship of Russia: I won and won. Nothing. Although I do not know any recipes against star disease.
- Outbreaks of this disease happen in your group?
D: Did not notice. Nevertheless, we work a lot every single day, and there is no time for star fever.
- Can you allow yourself something, forbid or force to do? Or should others do it?
D: Basically, I control my daily routine myself, I set myself tasks in training. Nobody holds me by my black gloves.
- You answered your own question, why do you need all this?
D: I want to succeed in my favorite occupation. If I didn’t like figure skating, I would hardly have continued to practice it and, most likely, I would not have had any particular results. I want to go down into the history of figure skating, I want to have fans who like what I do. I also understand that success can be a good start in later life. I have a dream that someday our family could improve their living conditions with prize money, because for more than 20 years we have been standing in line for housing.
- You have a big family?
D: Parents, older sister Lisa and younger brother Vanya. Lisa graduated from high school this year and wants to go to college, to study for a specialism in advertising. Vanya is also involved in sports and also in Sambo-70, but only in taekwondo. We also have a Pomeranian dog named Stefan.
- Do you manage to communicate with your family? In general, time for some leisure remains?
D: My brother and dad love to watch soccer or hockey. Dad is a former soccer player, so as long as I can remember, I watch soccer. I also like to collect puzzles. Especially if they are big. Two boxes were presented to me for New Year, in one a mosaic consisting of 5 thousand pieces. But we have only half collected it yet.
- Is there a special table for this at home?
D: Yes. Then we order to have the collected mosaic framed and hang it on the wall as a painting. In my room there is one with Olympic rings from which I hang my medals.

What is meant by optimism

- Who or what can bring you back to life if you feel very tired?
D: Usually this happens to me only at the end of the season. If I feel that I am mentally and physically tired of competitions, of the workload, of figure skating itself, it helps me a lot to communicate with friends who support me.
- Are these friends from the rink?
D: No. There are friends at the rink too, but I communicate with them more on our “professional” topics. But these friends are not from the world of figure skating. I talk with them more about life. I really value them.
- Are you a balanced person or impulsive?
D: I think balanced. I try to be reasonable and calm, I live by my head, not by my emotions. Generally I do not like to show emotions, to be aggressive.
- Secretive or open?
D: Probably open, because from my face you can always understand what mood I am in, what is in my soul. I don’t put some mask on so that no one could guess anything.
- Do you often criticize yourself?
D: Of course. If something goes wrong, the reason is in you. This means that I myself had not thought it through, underperformed.
- If any problem or task is not solved, what will you do?
D: If some kind of jump does not work out, I switch to another element to clear my head. But I will return to it again later.
- And if this were not a jump, but rather something in life that doesn't work out?
D: Yes, I probably act the same way. I always try to hold on until the end. I’m not banging my head against the wall, but I’m looking for ways to get there. I approach my mistakes with a cool head.
- An optimist or a pessimist?
D: Rather an optimist. If optimism is understood as cheerfulness.

And my take on the interview with his mother from the same issue:
------

Yekaterina Samsonova, Daniil’s mother:

“We are grateful to all the coaches of our son, because everyone invested in him professionally”

Our son began to practice figure skating by chance. Although, on the other hand, sometimes it seems it was predetermined.
Our eldest daughter Lisa went to the ice rink in Mar'yno. Danya was three and a half years old, and we didn’t plan any sports for him, although he constantly pulled on me: “Mom, I also want to go!” While we were waiting for Lisa from training and PE, I paid attention to this coach Valeriy Meshkov, who led the health group and taught figure skating to adult women.
I liked his approach to teaching very much, he used children's cubes, some sticks, cones, painted figures on ice - I decided to go up to him and ask him to take Danya into his group. Valery Ivanovich flatly refused, simply did not agree to anything. The main argument was: "You'd still leave for hockey anyway." I assured him no, my son isn't a hockey player. Only on this condition Meshkov took him in his group. By then he'd already collected a group of small kids around him, because according to the rules it is not allowed to combine into the same health group people of all ages. As a result, we worked out for some time and would have continued to, but the group was dissolved. Then, for about another year, we skated with Meshkov privately, traveled to various commercial sites, including skating rinks in shopping centers. As a result, Danya skated for two and a half years, while he did not do any jumps but only slided. Valery Ivanovich taught him in the style of the old school: he placed cones on ice, drew trajectories of arcs, forced him to hang in on his edges, after each workout he looked at his boots, checking for abrasions on their outer sides. However, at the age of six, the question arose about competitions, and we did not have any sports guidebooks or a school that could direct us to a start.

We went around a number of skating rinks: we went to CSKA, to Moskvich and many more everywhere. As a result, we came to Olympic Reserve No. 4, to this trainer, which we found following the recommendations from parents of established skaters. And today, whoever asks me, I will answer that Olga Levina is the best children's coach in Moscow. Classes were mostly held on small ice, but sometimes we were allowed on the main ice, usually together with the group of Il'ya Klimkin. From Olga Sergeyevna Daniil learned all his double jumps and combined them into cascades. Apparently, on the sliding base Valeriy Ivanovich had laid, jumps could quickly be added. Once, Olga Sergeyevna called me to her and said that Danya had already learned all the cascades 2-2 while the group, meanwhile, was just continuing to learn doubles, so, in her opinion, it did not make sense to stagnate, we should go further. We then wanted to get into the group with Natal'ya Dubinskaya and were very worried that she would not take us in, because at that time she did not have children as young as Danya in the group. Natal'ya Petrovna took us in, but the interaction did not work out: Danya nevertheless turned out to be too small and was thought somehow of being slow compared to the other guys from the group, so we made a difficult decision - to leave, so as not to get under the feet of the older ones, so as not to to grow some unnecessary complexes in your child.

We went into the group of Aleksander Shubin, and he taught Daniel to be a maximalist. Aleksander Aleksandrovich in his coaching essence is a pedant to bone marrow. If these are rotations, they must be done at the “sixth” level, because in that case the fourth will be obtained automatically. He teaches his athletes to perform elements not only technically correct, but also beautifully. Thanks to him, Danya learned to rotate at high speed, in various positions and centered. The choreographer working at Moskvich was Daniil Gleikhengauz, who in the fall of 2014 went to work in the group of Eteri Tutberidze. In general, I want to say that we are grateful to all the coaches who were in the sports life of our son, because everyone invested in him professionally.

We started the 2014/15 season, got selected for the Junior Championship of Russia, where we took the final 14th place. However, the floor was knocked from under our feet by a 18th place finish in the free program: the judges did not count three cascades of jumps in its second half, since they were superfluous elements. This result was our trigger for the idea of trying to get into the group of Eteri Tutberidze. Having returned from Velikiy Novgorod, I immediately called Daniil Markovich and asked if I could come to see them, and if so, when. He replied - tomorrow. Our son only before going to bed found out that he was going to see Tutberidze for appraisal.

To be honest, I was ready for the fact that we would be refused. In that case, I'd prepared a question for Eteri Georgiyevna: who should we train with so that you can take him later? But it so happened that she took him, because he himself made every effort to get in. I didn’t watch that training session, so when I heard in the corridors of Khrustalniy that some parents were discussing among themselves some kind of triple flip bug had arrived, I didn’t even realise right away that they were talking about my son.

With the transition of Danya to this group, the way of our life did not change much, but he himself became even more serious. Although he was never that frivolous before. I was told how, even at Moskvich, one of the parents, having seen the focus on his face before training, asked: “Danya, why are you going to the rink and not smiling?”, “Why smile? I’m going to work”, was the answer.

Russia has switched his 2nd event from JGP Croatia to JGP Poland. JGP Poland should be a lot easier event for him that JGP Croatia would have been.

He seems to have mastered his initial nerves over competing in the seniors.

Well done to #TeamTutberidzeForProgress for fine tuning this exquisite young skater, settle him, make him feel relaxed, confident and without self doubt.

Daniil only needs to pretend to skate just like in his best training sessions and there will be no external pressure.

Every young athlete goes through these phases, and Daniil and the Khrustalniy girls sort of live together through all of these new emotions, feelings and stresses. That's what a team is for, to help each other to cope.

Best of luch to Tiny Boss Man tomorrow in the free skate and chances to make the JGP final :)

I don't usually watch the mens' event - Daniil's SP video happened to autoplay as I was watching the ladies' event so I decided to watch.

Wow, call me a new fan! I was getting goosebumps from his performance with the intensity of the music and his balletic yet powerful hands and feet. The technical elements were spot on as well. Excited to see how he progresses this season!

Here is my take at it.

Daniil Samsonov: "My goal is to get my content more complicated and more complicated still"

September 21, 2019

Russian Championship winner Daniil Samsonov won the fifth stage of the junior Grand Prix series in Poland, setting three world achievements among juniors - in short, free and in the sum of two programs. After the competition, the skater commented on his performance to the FFKKR website:

- At my first Grand Prix in Riga, not everything worked out, because the first time I went to competitions of such a strong level. Now in Poland, it was much easier to skate, because I knew how to perform in the international arena, and my routines turned out better.

In general, for a first time I evaluate my performances in the Grand Prix series quite well. We'll try.

For me, the victory in Poland only means I have become more self-confident and will not doubt myself when I go out on the ice, because I know that I can do everything. At the second stage, the Grand Prix was easier because I knew how to represent my country at international level. I wasn't that nervous. Plus, I liked performing at the stages of the Grand Prix. After the first stage, we worked on the errors that I made in Riga, and in Poland it turned out pretty well.

Between the two stages of the Grand Prix, we worked on the mistakes, paid attention to my step sequences in order to maintain the levels. In Poland they were already higher.

Now I'll wait for the results of the two remaining stages of the Grand Prix, after which it will become clear whether I'll reach the final of the series or not. The main goal is to get more complicated programs, because the world of figure skating, especially the male one, doesn't stand still. Everyone is progressing, foreign boys have been very progressive this season, so we need to become more complicated and more complicated still”, said Daniil Samsonov.

On the mathematics of an arbitrary program as performed by D. Samsonov

I love math.

For me, as for many others, for some time it wasn't exactly clear how Daniil Samsonov with one quad that was penalised by 50% and two Axels collected the same technique score as today. Not, of course, he did his best - his jumps fly (due to his height, it is difficult to fulfil the altitude criterium, but he does indeed fly well), with excellent departures and from creative approaches. But one quadruple with a fall? Grassel had two, but he was clearly wronged by the allowances. Kagiyama was not wronged - and Kagiyama, too, was very worthy of these allowances.

But then I remembered that Tutberidze’s coaching staff was trying to squeeze the maximum out of the programs, and I calmed down. However, a comparison of the base values of both Daniel's and Yuma's programs still prompted me to write this post. Someone may say that I raise hype, but for hype I'd better write about Sasha Trusova))

As you can see, all the judges put Daniil Samsonov in first place for technique: https://oxy.tribuna.com/fetch/?url=...com/c852128/v852128256/1d220f/Bb6UkBJ4V9o.jpg (link to scoresheet)

Daniil lost 2.3 points of the base value from under rotating the Lutz, Yuma - 1.6 from a UR on an Axel and 3.3 from a double Salkhow instead of a triple. However, it is not clear in the end whether he can do 3-3 through an Euler, until this season he did 2.5-3. Suppose that he can - that is, we reduce the difference by 4.9-2.3 = 2.6 and still get more than 4 points of difference in basic complexity. A little less than 4 points, if we throw Yuma a level in rotations. And the basic complexity, especially considering that both guys, except for one element, showed very cool skating runs, still decides.

And here pure mathematics comes into play. And this is not about backloading now - Daniil won 0.47 points on the backloading, but if Kagiyama had a triple Salkhov instead of a double - the gain would be 0.17: Kagiyama also has two cascades in the bonus zone, although cheaper ones. So, where does the gap in base value come from? I go from less significant to more.

1. Rotation

In the Tutberidze group, the standard practice is to squeeze the maximum out of non-jumping elements. The most valuable set of rotations is CCoSp4 (combined rotation with a change of foot), FCCoSp4 (jump into a combined rotation with a change of leg) and FCSp4 (jump into a rotation in the flying camel spin). Their value is 3.50, 3.50 and 3.20, respectively. Daniil performs exactly theese, and Yuma has one of the rotations - CSSp - rotation in the top with a change of leg. Probably, it is more convenient for him, because in the short program this year there are different requirements for juniors, but the fact is that the rotation of level 4 adds only 3.00.

Half a point in the piggy bank.

2. Repeat triple Lutz instead of Flip.

I deliberately do not go into senior content. One valuable quadruple and two triksels, the other two quadruples, but less valuable and one triksel. In general, Daniil receives half a point on this, but these are dependent on skill, convenience and distribution of forces. So Yum's triksels are very good, apparently, just as long as there is no 3A3T cascade. The issue of cascades, by the way, will be very important, but we will return to it later. I want to emphasize that the distribution of senior jumps is just a question of the skater's skills, and not about the mathematics I want to discuss.

But the repetition of different triples is already mathematics. However, this, too, can be framed as a skill - Yuma has obvious problems with the edge, more than half of his Lutz' at international competitions are marked either with a! Or a Y. On the Flip, too, it sometimes flashes, but much less often. I will not talk about the edges of Kagiyama and Samsonov, I post about mathematics. In general, this is 0.6 points in the plus due to the difference in the base value of the Lutz and Flip.

3. Cascade with a Rittberger.

Thanks to Alina Zagitova, many love cascades with the Rittberger. However, in itself, it gives 0.6 points more than a Toeloop - a dubious ultra-si.

However, this cascade allows you to refrain from repeating Toeloops. And this already plays a role! Relatively speaking, Kaori Sakamoto repeats Flip and Toeloop in his free program, jumping cascades with a Toeloop, and Yevgeniya Medvyedeva jumps one of the cascades with a Rittberger, thanks to which she repeats the Flip and Rittberger - already a 0.6 separation in base value. For those who do not have problems with edges on the old fashioned toepick, it is still better - Alina Zagitova repeats the Lutz and Flips, which allows you to break away by 1 point from those who repeat the Lutz and Toeloops. This is why the cascade with a Rittberger is valuable - it removes the repeat of the Toeloop.

Single men with a Rittberger cascade do not quote. It is insidious, it’s easier to designate a cascade with a double Toeloop and repeat one of the high-value jumps. That’s how I got rid of Yuma Kagiyama's repeating Toeloop in this skating run. He performed everyt triple except the Salkhow, but we do not consider errors in skating run now.

Daniil Samsonov jumped a cascade with a Rittberger. As a result, he has all types of triple jumps (Axel and Lutz repeated) and one empty slot. A double Axel easily fills that one.

The base of the double Axel is 3.3. The base of the double Toeloop is 1.3. So Daniil's choses cascade with a Rittberger brings an extra two points.

However, it’s worth noting the skill of Daniil himself - without possession of the 3A3T cascade (while Yuma has so far attempted cascades of 3.5 + 3 or 4 + 3, which are not proven internationally) a cascade with a Rittberger would not have played such a significant role. But in any case, it is due to this cascade that Daniil repeats the Lutz, which gives a significant increase

In total, he scored 3.1 points purely by mathematics and competent distribution of jumping content - I do not consider the difference between Lutz and 2 Axels and 2 Toeloops and an Axel.

In the free program, at the stage of the junior series of the Grand Prix of the 2019/20 season in Gdansk, Daniil Samsonov won 2.55 points from Yuma Kagiyama.

Here you have the math.

But in general, I really liked this stage. All three prize-winners in the young men rode very cool! I'm a little sad for Daniel (I really love Italian singles), but both Daniil and Yuma got excellent marks, and more importantly, they showed great skating runs! I look forward to the December finals with their participation.

When each of them stood on their own pedestal step, they were about the same height. It's cute. Where Daniel’s shirt displayed this bleeding heart, he held his flowers. That's nice too. (link to photo of medalists)

Interview with Ted (limited by Daniil G's english )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2_m7K2DfZA

He is a very serious boy, but perhaps too critical of himself all the time? Daniil, you can relax, smile, Little Boss Man ;-)

However, his demeanour correlates with his interview and what his mother said about him. Would he turn out to be a rebellious teenager?

#TeamTutberidzeForProgress should keep him and cherish him, for he is truely a special skater in the making.

He is. Assuming there will not be any rule changes then olympic season would be his first senior eligible season.

He has the SP, FS and combined total Junior Worlds Records on his name, so, he definitely has a real shot at winning the JGP Final.

By the way, Daniil might win Olympic gold medal in January 2020 already. That would be at the 2020 Youth Olympics. He is eligible to skate there.
