Roman Galay won Nationals in Finland and has now better SB than Valtter Virtanen. It depends on if he has got minimun TES from international competition, if he will be sent instead of Virtanen.

Virtanen is still eligible for Worlds, but not Galay. Good for him that he can do Euros, as I imagine that Virtanen will not stay indefinitely (he's the current elder of men figure skating!)

Though previous seasons there was not suspense at all for the win, this season there is a little bit. I think it won't be easy for Fernandez to win that 7th title. Not necessary because of others but because of himself. I doubt that he can delivers his previous contents with some weeks training. Though he can win by play it safe like one quad in each program. Judges will shower him with big GOEs and PCS. I only see a surprisingly clean Kolyada beat him.
I don't want to have too much faith in Kovtun.

I’m excited for this competition, even if the podium is a bit predictable. I think Javi will be just fine. I don’t expect him to be in his best form, but he knows how to put it together when it matters. Brezina and Kovtun have the momentum going for them, but I don’t know if they can challenge a solid Fernandez, especially with the PCS difference. We’ll see though.

What will be most interesting for me is to see who from the smaller feds will be a future contender, what with Javi’s retirement and Brezina’s (probable) exit soon as well. Aymoz, Rizzo, Grassl, Siao Him Fa, Vasiljevs, Kvitelashvili could all make a statement. I remember liking Hayrapetyan at Talinn as well. This is all assuming we don’t have the usual men’s splat fest, of course.

Will Rizzo debut his quad here, or was that more of a sneak peak for next season?

I'm mostly interested by the debuts of Grassl and Adam Siao Him Fa. In a couple of season maybe they will be podium contenders.
I wonder if Grassl will use the guns 4lz and 4lo. And more important, land them.

Will be an interesting event. Hoping for Fernandez to have one good last championship. It will also be interesting to see if Alexander Majorov will make top 10 this year also. I also very curious of what will be the lowest points after the SP for qualifying for the FS. Last year it was 60.23. My wild guess that it maybe will be as high as 64-65. That is, if not too many has a melt down. I´m almost sure it will be higher then last year.

Why doesnt Spain have 3 spots when Javier won last year?

Spain had 2 skaters last year - to earn 3 spots their placements added together must be less than 13. Spain has no other guy that can get a 12th place yet

Ironically, if they had only sent Fernandez last, they would have earned 3 spots this year. Or was there a change in rules? I remember some people at the ISU congress were upset Javi kept earning 2 spots for spanish men at the Olympics...

For Europeans I'm not asking for much, just no splatfest for either Misha, Deniss or Javi. I'm worried all three could fall apart with their preparation and lead up to the competition :(

(

yes, the rule change has been passed this summer for Olympics qualification. If a country qualify 2 or 3 spots and the second or third skater doesn't make the FS at previous Worlds, he/she/they (they can change skaters as long as it is not the one who have "won" the spots at Worlds) are forced to do Nebelhorn (or wherever the last Olympic qualification event will take place) in order to confirm the ticket for the country.

For Worlds and Euros it will stay the same as usual.

i envy your confidence, girls  i really can't predict this podium, or the top 5  will fernandez be in shape enough to win? (i guess so, he want this to be his last glory)? will the russian boys keep it together? can we bet on brezina? so many questions...

LOL. And if the answer to all these questions is "no," who will be on the podium?

The men's event can be so much fun to watch, though, because you never know what is going to happen. I hope Javi had a good sendoff.

I put those without a SB at the bottom but I fully expect Fernandez to make the final (barring a complete disaster) so I made the cut of after no23. However between no 23 and no29 there is less than two point difference so any of them should have a good chance if they skate their best to make the final.

Thanks for the list! This is the ISU score right? Sondre SB this season from other competitions is 67.98, his 3 last competitions is 67.98, 67-something and 65. I know the judges will be hard on the score, but I think 60 points is the minimum we can expect of him if he skates a clean and nice program. I´m hoping that he will be about 63 or above, expecting that they may be some small mistakes and lower PCS. If he skates really clean i´m pretty sure he will qualify for the FS. Or maybe not, maybe he needs someone of the above the list to make some mistakes.

Also, isn´t it 24 men going to the FS and not 23?:)

Never mind, I guess you took 23. because Javier ofc. will be one of the 24.

Yes 24 men go through to the final and yes I assumed Fernandez who dont have a SB will be among them.
Yes this is the ISU scores I am sure that more skaters have better scores than what I wrote above but there was no way I was going to go through every competition this season for all skaters.

As I said I think all skaters down to about 29 have a fair chance to make the final since the SBs are so close

I do agree. It will be very hard fight like last Euros. The minimum score was 60-something last year, I guessing it will be higher this season. Maybe 63-65? It will of course depend on if the skates are clean or not :) I think we have to expect that maybe some of the debuts will have a hard time keeping the nerves in control. Also, knowing one has to fight to get to the final must also be a factor that can tribute to that the skaters get´s very nervous because they can´t make a lot of mistakes.

Almost just one week now and we will know a lot more about the outcome :)

I will be hoping that Sondre and the majorov brothers make the final but as any figure skating fan I will be happy if the men deliver clean skates and make it an exiting competition!
