This is why I'm confused about blade size

The Risport tech catalogue here says that for a Risport RF3 boot of size 270 you should use 10 inch blades: https://issuu.com/klsport/docs/catalogo_tecnico_a4_risport_ice-rol

However, other sites all suggest 10-1/4 inch: https://skaterslanding.com/pages/risport-size-chart

But what I also don't get on the Risport tech catalogue is that for 1/3 inch blades, they suggest you should use 10-1/3 for size 270. It doesn't make sense? Could their chart be wrong?

I have 270 and 10-1/4 inch and it fits from toe to heel and I haven't tripped over the tail so far. Should I just stop thinking about this?

I wouldn't worry about it, there's some leeway to it and the ideal length/mounting is going to vary by the person. If it's working for you then it's working for you. You would know if there was something wrong.

I think you’re overthinking it a bit. I have the Jackson Debut in men’s 7.5 which can accommodate up to a 10 1/4” blade, but my blades are 10 1/2” MK Pros that I carried over from my old boots. My tech mounted them so that the spin rocker is in the right place, and there was still enough room to adjust them in for my probation with just a slight bit of overhang on the heel plate. It hasn’t affected my skating in the slightest, and I just have to be sure I dry the heel plate off really well after skating so that moisture doesn’t get trapped under the plate (I also Sno-Sealed the soles very liberally, so they don’t collect a lot of moisture anyway). I saved around $200 by not replacing the blades, and since the blades were so new when I got them, I likely won’t have to replace them before the boots anyway.

(a) If the Risport chart recommends 10" blades for blades that come in 1/4" increments, but 10-1/3" blades for blades that come in 1/3" increments, there obviously has to be an error in the chart. I'm not overly surprised. Several years ago, I bought a pair of Jackson boots, and the skate tech [an experienced tech, also a coach, ex-pro, and ex-competitive skater] installed blades according to the Jackson blade size chart. The blades were nearly a 1/2" shorter than the boot. I didn't know any better at the time, so I went with it. When I later changed blades, however, I asked for a 1/4" longer blade.

Some sizing charts have a caveat along the lines of: "This chart is intended to be a general guide. Always measure the length of the boot to determine the proper size of blade." There's a problem though if the shop doesn't stock the boots and the blades; you need to order the boots, wait for them to come in, measure them, and then order the blades. But the extra wait is probably worth it, and what I plan to do the next time I need to replace boots.

[I've also noticed discrepancies in lace-length charts: some of the lace lengths in the charts don't correspond with the lace lengths that the manufacturer offers.]

(b) If the blade is slightly on the long side, tripping on the tail is not the main issue. For a given blade length, tail lengths vary with the blade model. For example, I have two different blade models in 10-3/4" length. The tail of one model is about 3/8" longer than the tail of the other. For a given model blade, the blade length will have more effect on the portion of the main rocker over which your weight is centered, and the alignment of the sweet spot with respect to your foot.

I've had no problems with spins or turns on the main rocker which was why I mentioned the tail being in the way. But yeah that's a good point.

But one of your previous posts in a related thread indicates that you are having problems with the centering of your weight over the main rocker:

Yeah that was a few weeks ago. I got new boots as well and I was breaking them in and had all sorts of issues. Now I have no problem putting my weight over the main rocker. I also changed blades with larger toepicks which was and still affecting me. But I just have to get used to it. As I've now fully broken and getting back to jumps I'm feeling like the longer tail is making the landings really stable? I remember in my Coronation Aces (which felt short) I had no stability in some landings and felt scary.

Phantom. I need to stop with threads as everything’s fine now. I changed everything from boot brand/size/stiffness and blade brand/length/rocker sizes. Considering it’s been only 7 weeks and I’m pretty much back to normal plus noticeable improvements. Thanks for your help.

I think I also got the wrong blades for my Risport RF3s because of charts confusion. They look a little longer than they should be. I'll see what the specialist who'll do the mounting will say but is it generally bad for the boot if the blade plates reach the edges of the boot? I'm really not looking forward to the hassle of returning the blades and waiting for new ones.

Why is it bad for the boot? Doesn’t Edea recommend blades to flush from toe to heel as an example?

I contacted Risport, they said 10.25 is fine for Royal Pro 270.

Yeah

it’s all good, I just bought with 10.25” size 270 royal pro but… if I upgrade to royal prime I might go back to 10” because that model size 270 requires 10” blade… not budget friendly, so maybe I should have taken the 10” blade
