Sarah Elizabeth Hughes is a former American competitive Ladies figure skater, competing internationally between 1997 and 2003. She was born on 2 May 1985 in Great Neck, New York.

She is the 2002 Olympic Champion and the 2001 World bronze medalist. She is also a two-time U.S. National silver medalist (2001 and 2003) and medalist of several GP series events. As a curiosity, she is the only American woman to have won the Olympic title without ever having won either a World or U.S. senior national title.

She was coached and choreographed by Robin Wagner.

Sarah has 5 brothers and sisters. Her younger sister, Emily, was also a competitive figure skater who is a silver medalists of the 2007 Four Continents Championships and the 2007 U.S. National Championships and who also formed part of the U.S. Figure Skating Olympic team at the Torino 2006, placing 6th.

Due to her mother's condition, Sarah has been engaged in many breast cancer awareness initiatives. For over 10 years she also gave free figure skating classes for girls in Harlem.

In 2003, Sarah began her studies at Yale University. On May 2009, Hughes graduated from Yale and received a bachelor's degree in American studies with a concentration in U.S. politics and communities. She continued her education and in May 2018 she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

In 2005 she was induced into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Results

* Until the 2002/2003 season, the singles events at the ISU major Championships, especially the Worlds, were composed of three segments: QR (qualification round A or B), SP and LP (current FS). The factorized result of the LP skated in the QR was added to the result obtained in the other segment and the sum of the three was the total score (TS). Since the above table does not contain the results obtained in the QR, below please find their brief summary.
- At the 2003 World Championships Sarah was 6th in her QA group (6.0 scoring system).
- At the 2001 World Championships she was 2nd 9in her QA group.
- At the 2000 World Championships she was 3rd in her QB group.
- At the 1999 World Championships she was 4th in her QA group.
- At the 1999 World Junior Championships she was 1st in her QB group.

The 2002 Olympic gold medalist in the Ladies event, although retired since 2003, simply deserved her own fan fest with a summary of her career. The thread is still under construction (I will add the detailed results), but I already wanted to let you know that after so many years since her biggest success, Sarah has finally her fan fest in the GS forum :) Enjoy.

EDIT: the OP is already finished.

She is a lovely person from what I can tell, above and beyond her skating. Before she went to law school she used to interact with people (including me) on her Facebook page pretty regularly

Sarah remains one of my favourite female skaters. Despite what everyone says I really enjoy her skating...lovely lines lovely spins. I miss the old school days, the skaters these days are just skating off a checklist- there's no actual joy or charisma just crunch crunch crunch like a factory line.

She is an associate at Proskauer, working in their corporate group.... equity and M&A's.
