Shizuka Arakawa (in Japanese: 荒川 静香) is a former Japanese Ladies figure skater.

She was born on 29 December 1981 in Tokyo, Japan.

Shizuka is the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games champion, the 2004 World Champion, the 2003 Winter Universiade and Asian Games winner, a two-time Japanese national champion (1998 and 1999) and a multi-medalist of numerous GP and other ISU events.

Arakawa is the third Japanese Lady to become World Champion (after Midori Ito in and Yuka Sato in 1994) and the first Japanese skater to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating and the second Japanese skater to win any Olympic medal in figure skating, after Midori Ito, who won silver in 1992. She is also the second Japanese woman to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics (the first one was Tae Satoya, a skier). She was the only Japanese medalist at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Her trademark move is the Ina Bauer with a full backbend. Due to Arakawa's use of this move during her free skate at the 2006 Olympics, the term "Ina Bauer" became very popular in Japan, and Arakawa's performance of it became iconic. The Ina Bauer move is often referred to in Japan by Arakawa's name.

Arakawa retired from competitive skating following her Olympic win and began skating professionally in ice shows and exhibitions. She also works as a skating sportscaster for Japanese television.

As of June 2019, she is married and has two children.

Following my goal to open a fan fest for the Olympic and World Champions from the last few decades, I've just created a thread for Shizuka Arakawa. It's still under construction as I need to find all the available links to her programs and galas. I hope to do so over the next couple of days, but you can already start commenting.

Enjoy :)

I've finally terminated updating Shizuka's OP. I've added all the videos I could find and more details to the results table. Now I will make her bold in the Index :)

Arakawa made a brief appearance during the Opening Ceremony, turning the lights on for the kabuki performance, which was part of a comedy skit. My hometown is hosting Team USA's sitting volleyball team.

I was wondering if it was her! But couldn't find any information. 😀
The Canadian TV commentators said it was her. I'm sure they don't have superior powers of recognition, and were reading it from information supplied to them.

Last day, the Mayor Cup of Sendai (which isn't an ISU competition, if I understand well, but attracts public and competitors on the seasonal outside rink) had Yuzuru Hanyu as a guest. This year, Shizuka Arakawa graced the event, but I haven't found out yet if she skated, like Yuzuru Hanyu had done. She was Sendai's (and Japan's) first Olympic Gold Medal in Figure Skating in 2006.
