sure but Nathan didn't do all the quads he usually does.. .so 330 then becomes very high no?

can we move on with national scoring? I see National Championships as not only a very important competition, but also as a celebration of a country's skating... if the judges are thrilled with Gilles-Poirier's FD, why not give them the score they want to give it and make the party super fun?

It's not as if, at this point of the season, they needed tough love to improve their content... they did well, let's celebrate with their win, and with a great score...

i am thinking i am going to create a national scoring convertor.... just like a currency convertor...

330 for Nathan in the USA= 348 in Canada, at least... mind you... not sure Jason's Brown close to 300 points without quads is really worth that much in Canada...

Jason did land a quad in his FS. It was UR, but he didn't fall or even step out of it. He gets high GOE on all his elements and that's why he can score as high as he does. This was his best performance of the year, as he had been in recovery from a concussion he suffered in the early season.

As for Nathan, he was ill with a cold during Nationals and cut down on the quads, but his performance did not suffer. He won't be at 4CC but he'll have the usual complement of quads for Worlds.

BTW I have been ill myself and won't be able to go to Worlds. I will be selling my all-event ticket.

Chock / Bates may have gotten an 11-point boost, but what about LaJoie / Lagha who got a whopping 21.39? C/B are at least the reigning GPF silver medalists, while L/L are senior newbies.

Jason's quad was not rotated...

LaLa are improving very fast with incredibly challenging material... they are not junior world champions for nothing. I can see their score improving steadily as they compete more and more in the senior circuit

Chock & Bates got 11 points higher than their GPF total at US nats (I believe it's also their SB) so this doesn't just happen in Canada. It pretty much happens everywhere else but Japan and is the standard for national level scoring. National level scoring just isn't comparable to international.

Also, yes, I am aware your post was likely made before the US nats FD

Surprised to read that some GS'ers still argue that nation inflation exists elsewhere but never stateside. Your example demonstrates why this is a false narrative. Where is the fainting couch as some may need it soon.

It was amazing Jason landed the attempt. In the past, he always fell. At least he's working on a quad after a difficult season trying to recover from a serious concussion.

As for Nathan, he was skating at US Nationals with a bad case of the flu.

There has been a JWC every year. Few go on to major success, and it takes time, hard work and luck in a sport that is plagued by shifting politics. Some---like Davis/White---were never JWC, but they rose rapidly nonetheless. Others earned the title but are still waiting for that major breakthrough (Hawayek/Baker). Some never got as far as they wanted to go and retired (Bobrova / Soloviev).

For L/L, the future remains to be seen.

i agree with everything you say chuckie

but no matter what, a quad needs to be fully rotated ... great attempt but no candy

for nathan : i adore him. my point was simply that he scored very high without his full quad arsenal.... i cannot wait to see him in montreal.. he is no chiddy but i love his skating

for JWC : especially in ice dance... so many couples from russia have been crowned and split...

I agree that not all junior skaters have what it takes to make it onto the big scene.. but LaLa have it... will they be podium contenders???? who knows? However, it's clear to me, from the improvements they have made with their skating, how quick and sharp they can do steps, and also with a new intensity in their interpretation that they are putting themselves out there, and it will not be possible to overlook them for much longer. What they did at Nationals is already quite a statement.... let's forget about the scores : what they did is to "demand" from the judges to be ranked #2... there was NO WAY to award that ranking to Soucisse and Firus or anyone else... they were clearly above the pack... and that says a lot, beating a very experienced team who has ranked 14th in their only WC appearance, that year, having won silver at 4CC...

so to me, the experts, no matter the scores have spoken. They have judges LaLa to be far superior to the other teams in Canada aside GP and most likely FBS. They were automatically awarded a spot to WC, feat that not even the champions in men and women achieved.

Sorry, to clarify, I am aware this definitely happens in Canada, I was just trying to say that I don't think we're the only ones who inflate nats

Yes, L/L may be among the best in Canada. But there is a huge gap between home success and international recognition. That's what all dance teams want, but few can attain. At this point, Zhulin seems to be driving the ice dance train, and is determined to mine gold at Beijing, ban or no ban.

I think Osmond4Gold replied to the wrong post. Almost everyone here agrees with your point that national inflation is (almost) universal, and definitely not confined to Canada or worse in Canada.

Nationals we all know are not indicative of international scoring. Canada, US and Russia are all known for their national inflation like the rising of the sun it is always there- this has been going on for years. REmember all those 6.0's at US Nats? Come on...And this year as much as one can attack Canada how can you not notice the ridiculous scores in pairs at the US Nationals. Might as well crown the top two american pairs team at nats as world contenders.

Not to quibble, because I don't think it had an impact on the performance... but facts are important.

Jason's attempt was scored as a full downgrade, not a UR, and that did have an impact on his score. If I remember correctly from the protocols... and I don't have the interest to look it up again and double check... he received only 2.38 for the element.

I will say that I saw video of attempts in practice and they looked very good, at least +2 GOE quality. So, I hope for better execution next time around. It's there...

I thought i was generally acknowledged and acceptednationals was going to mean inflation - didn't matter where. ImeanI always remembered in the paast the generous 6.0's atUS nats - sorry Michelle et al. US was probably the instgator of generous national marking lol. But thatis one event worlds will tell.

If you re read previous posts on this Thread, not all would agree. Surprisingly, some believe that while it happens elsewhere, it never happens in the USA. Oh to be so in denial from the reality. Pollyanna would be pleased. :)

Yes, but I think most would agree natonal gift giviing is the norm. At least I am being fair and say it is rampant across bsically all nations I guess I did see their logic how they could try to argue it but the arguement can be made certain skaters are undermarked by the international judging panel. In the end scores are useless to compare in figure skating. The judging criteria, values for elements and goe's keep changing.
