Are you a huge fan of a skater or team that isn't from one of the big federations? Like say Elisabet Tursynbaeva or Donovan Carillo or Brendan Kerry or Deniss Vasiljevs? Your only current options for discussions right now are fan fests and competition threads. So if you would like to discuss the kind of things about these skaters that are inappropriate in Fan Fests, you might discuss them here?

I'm excited to see Loena Hendrickx again with 2 GP assignments! :) I am rooting for her plus I like that she is keeping her SP from last year.
I do wonder though, is Jorik coming back at all?

I believe Jorik is done, and is now doing some coaching, etc. and helping with Loena's career.

Unrelatedly (well, I guess it's another small fed European man), I'm kind of worried that Deniss Vasiljevs has about reached the limit of what he's going to get technically out of his current coaching arrangement. If you compare him to some other quad-less skaters who were in the hunt for it this past season, he's obviously behind Matteo Rizzo, who managed to get it right in half a season; and even Jason Brown, who doesn't have it yet, seems further along, and Jason's 3A is much more stable now. I'm not sure Lambiel is the man to get this particular job done.

I hope Loena's stagnation last season, because of injury, now is a thing of the past and she will make progress again. I always enjoyed their brother and sister act, so I'm sorry to see Jorik is probably done. Understandable (he is a lot older than Loena and had been on the scene for quite a while) but a pity.

Regarding Federations, I just read that the Belgian Speed and Figure Skating Federations have come together in one federation. I'm not so pleased there. In the Netherlands there is also one federation for both Speed and Figure Skating and that has not helped the development of Figure Skating in our country at all. Of course, Belgium is not The Netherlands so things might be different there but my expectations are low.

Well, in 17/18 season he was one of the few men who managed to skate a competition (2018 Worlds) with no calls, pops and other mistakes. I heard Ghislain Briand, a jumping specialist from TCC, will be coming (or already came?) to Switzerland to help Stephane's students. Maybe this season was just unlucky for him. If the next one is no better, he should make some changes or even move to a new coach. However, I don't think it will be necessary for Deniss. So we should just wait and see how his next competitions will go.

When did the merge happen in the Netherlands? I always found curious why figure skating became so anecdotal there since the world medals of Dijkstra and De Leeuw...

Dijkstra primarily. De Leeuw was the first US skater I knew of that took advantage of her dual citizenship to escape what was at the time an extremely competitive US field.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dianne_de_Leeuw

There were some good figure specialists in the area, so I am wondering whether the progressive deemphasis on and eventual elimination of school figures played a part in the decline of figure skating in the Netherlands?

i cannot say the merger between speed skating and figure skating feds in the Netherlands worked to the advantage of skating fans. Last I looked (last fall), they had a very nice website where it was the devil to find the figure skating info.

I hope things improve.

I really don't know when it actually happened, or if there even was a real merge or they've always been in one Federation. Just that there was and is just one Federation, and it's not helping Figure Skating. It's not for nothing that women like Joan Haanappel and Sjoukje herself are so active in a separate organisation that promotes Figure Skating only. I wish the Federation would do more.

So do I. Let's just say Joan Haanappel is really working on it. Also that some parts of our culture aren't helping either. I mean, poor Diane de Leeuw, got a silver medal...and all that happened was that she got blamed for not getting the gold. Nasty, because she did really well.

I don't know whether the elimination of school figure played a part. Don't think so. Just that the speed skaters did do well that even Sjoukje was forgotten. A real shame!

I believe Deniss is smart enough to know what's good for him. By leaving home as a kid and changing his coaches three times to get the best possible coaching arrangements he proved he's been thinking seriously about his career. We all wish him to have stable 3A and get these quads he's been working on for two years now, but in fact nobody wants them more than Deniss himself.

I heard Ghislain Briand, a jumping specialist from TCC, will be coming (or already came?) to Switzerland to help Stephane's students.

Ghislain came to Champery at least once last summer, he already came to their camp in Austria in April and is expected again for two more camps. Moreover, Peter Grutter, former Stephane's coach, has been helping at Champery too. So it's not only the Champery coaching team who work with Deniss on his jumps. (Oh, and I remember also Mie Hamada coaching at Champery for a while ;))

Recently I noticed that Matyas Belohradsky has been training with Raf team. Does anybody know if he moved permanently or went for a summer camp?

*Any news on that girl from Azerbaijan who’s going to be at Rostelecom Cup? She seems a solid jumper, just in need of some “sparkle”.

*Do we know whether or not Anna Kuzmenko is going senior this season? She has so much potential and I want her to be the top French lady. Is anyone else tired of seeing Mae and Laurine get sp scores in the mid-to-low-50s year after year? I am.

Anna is staying junior. https://ffsg.org/evenement/grand-prix-junior-de-patinage-artistique-danse-sur-glace-2019-courchevel/

Anna Kuzmenko staying junior? ☹️I think she could really make a splash on the senior scene. Or at least make a splash in French ladies skating.

Staying junior for JGP, but then she'll probably do senior B's to reach senior TES and try to get the 3rd European entry.
