"The Tutberidze group raised the bar very high." Opinions of Artur Gachinskiy
Coach in Mishin's group, winner of the World and European Championships - on the results of the junior Championship of Russia.
Artur Gachinskiy was one of the youngest coaches at the tournament in Saransk. At the age of 26, he was already working with youth at the Star Ice school led by Alexey Nikolayevich Mishin, although Artur himself competed until four years ago.
True, the ward of Gachinsky, Sof'ya Moroz, failed to challenge the juniors of Tutberidze in the same way as Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva did in the senior Championship of Russia. After her short program, Moroz was ninth only 4 points from a medal, but her free program didn't work out and the young skater left the ice in tears.
SE spoke with the young coach about who is capable of challenging Khrustalniy and the future of men's singles, in which everything isn't so bad.
To fight the Tutberidze group, you need to overcome the fear of difficult jumps
-- Artur, what are your impressions after the junior championship?
- Not everyone is satisfied, of course. Sonya Moroz could not cope with her nerves, apparently, she again wanted to defeat someone.
-- Is that bad for a skater? 'Need to fight with yourself', as the famous memorized phrases from the press conferences say?
- You need to go out and do what you know how. At least that. For the skater this will already be enough.
-- At senior level, Star Ice has strong skaters, at the junior level, more likely CSKA has, but it is obvious that the hegemony of Khrustalniy is now on both levels. Can you somehow fight it, are there any prerequisites for change?
- Firstly, in our world everything is cyclical. Yes, now we are surrounded, so to speak, by such a situation. Eteri Georgiyevna with her group set the bar very high. It’s hard to keep up. But let's see what time will tell.
To oppose something to this group, you need to find a skater who would like to do this, that is, to learn a comparable set of elements. And the main thing here is to overcome the fear of multi-turn jumps. The main thing is not to be afraid. Well, you need to look for talented children.
-- It turns out that the calculation favours those who are smaller?
- Yes, it should be learned from an early age. In childhood, a child is fearless. He will perform any element that you ask him to do. And then you can start from there if he is not so technically. If you take girls, not everyone, in principle, has multi-turn, quadruple jumps capabilities.
The difference in the amount of ice time affects the result.
-- The name of Liza Tuktamysheva should sound here, because she was able to overcome fear and is engaged in your school. Does she have little chance against the young?
- On the contrary, she has! She showed she can. Quadruple Toeloop, triple Axel already demonstrated in many starts! It all depends on herself, on her mindset. She specifically understood that something needs to be done, and she overcame herself in order to compete with those who make these jumps.
-- And how much dedicated ice time, in principle, does the Star Ice school have? Because in Khrustalniy, children train from morning till evening, except for lunch breaks.
- We have two ice sessions of 1 hour and 15 minutes plus general physical exercise, specialised physical exercise, choreography. But in general, students are busy somewhere from 8:30 till 15 hours. Then other groups of children come to the ice for their basic training.
-- There is a difference ...
- Of course, this also gives a result. But not everyone can withstand this load. Objectively, not everyone is so efficient and ready to do 100 - 150 jumps per day. Everyone sooner or later has a limit, after which the body breaks down.
I remember how as a kid I went with Alexey Nikolayevich Mishin to a seminar in Haku, Spain, where we only had a break for lunch. I skated for like 6 to 8 hours. But I was a child, and we did not do heavy exercises. The story with lots of jumps is a little different, and here we must still find such a hardworking child so that he can withstand this schedule.
Now all our singles are good in their own way
-- Do you like the fact that now everything is essentially decided by quads? Even our discussion immediately came down to them. But there is still choreography, presentation?
- You are right, in many ways everything comes down to jumping. But there is no such thing like the second assessment was canceled. There are no empty programs now, there are no simple jump approaches either. Everyone is looking for a new element, a special transition, a unique feature. If asses them like that, all programs are rich. This isn't like ten years ago, when we took four to seven running steps for the sake of a quad Toeloop. Times have changed, the generation of children has changed. And they are more adapted to these work orders.
-- I managed to see men's competitions, in whom did they see future champions? Maybe someone besides champion Daniil Samsonov will highlight?
- I watched the mens singles as soon as there was an opportunity. Petya Gumennik has a very strong program, there are no empty spaces, he owns quad Salchow's, there is a video of how he jumps a quad Lutz, he seems to have the Toeloop. But I heard that he had an injury. But even what he showed here is already a good skating run. Triple Axels from straight off a “boat”, Lutz's with hands over the head, that is, the full range of what figure skating is under the current rules. And the goal now is to fill the program as much as possible. He does it. Andrey Mozalyov also has a strong program, quadruples from simple approaches, but triples from a “boat”, each element with some kind of hook, bounce, “swallow” on a turn. It is adapted to the new system, there is intense movement of arms and legs. Although the first day it really didn't work out.
Zhenya Semyonenko was injured for a long time, but managed to cope with his excitement. He skated off a clean short program, a quadruple Salchow, showed a Toeloop, though only at a warm-up, and fell in the actual skating run. Now everyone has changed so much that you look at one, the second - and all are good. You just need to wait for the moment when they grow up and will perfectly master everything, and after that you can increase the second rating.
But Hanyu and Chen are cosmic now, before Beijing our single skaters can’t catch up with them?
- There is still time left before Beijing, but you need to look at the picture as a whole, what to strive for. Catching them, looking at them, is easier than running away. Let's remember Nathan a few years ago, when he only tried all quads in one program, he was lying. Let's be honest - he almost did not get up, only dropped. Several seasons passed - he managed, once - and already all fours were under his command. Need experience. You can’t jump from the floundering bay with one quadruple. Once luck can help, but in general, your base and experience decides. Yuzuru already how many years without failure? And still every year he goes forward, it is amazing. We should take our example from this.
