"The Tutberidze group raised the bar very high." Opinions of Artur Gachinskiy

Coach in Mishin's group, winner of the World and European Championships - on the results of the junior Championship of Russia.

Artur Gachinskiy was one of the youngest coaches at the tournament in Saransk. At the age of 26, he was already working with youth at the Star Ice school led by Alexey Nikolayevich Mishin, although Artur himself competed until four years ago.
True, the ward of Gachinsky, Sof'ya Moroz, failed to challenge the juniors of Tutberidze in the same way as Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva did in the senior Championship of Russia. After her short program, Moroz was ninth only 4 points from a medal, but her free program didn't work out and the young skater left the ice in tears.

SE spoke with the young coach about who is capable of challenging Khrustalniy and the future of men's singles, in which everything isn't so bad.

To fight the Tutberidze group, you need to overcome the fear of difficult jumps

-- Artur, what are your impressions after the junior championship?

- Not everyone is satisfied, of course. Sonya Moroz could not cope with her nerves, apparently, she again wanted to defeat someone.

-- Is that bad for a skater? 'Need to fight with yourself', as the famous memorized phrases from the press conferences say?

- You need to go out and do what you know how. At least that. For the skater this will already be enough.

-- At senior level, Star Ice has strong skaters, at the junior level, more likely CSKA has, but it is obvious that the hegemony of Khrustalniy is now on both levels. Can you somehow fight it, are there any prerequisites for change?

- Firstly, in our world everything is cyclical. Yes, now we are surrounded, so to speak, by such a situation. Eteri Georgiyevna with her group set the bar very high. It’s hard to keep up. But let's see what time will tell.

To oppose something to this group, you need to find a skater who would like to do this, that is, to learn a comparable set of elements. And the main thing here is to overcome the fear of multi-turn jumps. The main thing is not to be afraid. Well, you need to look for talented children.

-- It turns out that the calculation favours those who are smaller?

- Yes, it should be learned from an early age. In childhood, a child is fearless. He will perform any element that you ask him to do. And then you can start from there if he is not so technically. If you take girls, not everyone, in principle, has multi-turn, quadruple jumps capabilities.

The difference in the amount of ice time affects the result.

-- The name of Liza Tuktamysheva should sound here, because she was able to overcome fear and is engaged in your school. Does she have little chance against the young?

- On the contrary, she has! She showed she can. Quadruple Toeloop, triple Axel already demonstrated in many starts! It all depends on herself, on her mindset. She specifically understood that something needs to be done, and she overcame herself in order to compete with those who make these jumps.

-- And how much dedicated ice time, in principle, does the Star Ice school have? Because in Khrustalniy, children train from morning till evening, except for lunch breaks.

- We have two ice sessions of 1 hour and 15 minutes plus general physical exercise, specialised physical exercise, choreography. But in general, students are busy somewhere from 8:30 till 15 hours. Then other groups of children come to the ice for their basic training.

-- There is a difference ...

- Of course, this also gives a result. But not everyone can withstand this load. Objectively, not everyone is so efficient and ready to do 100 - 150 jumps per day. Everyone sooner or later has a limit, after which the body breaks down.
I remember how as a kid I went with Alexey Nikolayevich Mishin to a seminar in Haku, Spain, where we only had a break for lunch. I skated for like 6 to 8 hours. But I was a child, and we did not do heavy exercises. The story with lots of jumps is a little different, and here we must still find such a hardworking child so that he can withstand this schedule.

Now all our singles are good in their own way

-- Do you like the fact that now everything is essentially decided by quads? Even our discussion immediately came down to them. But there is still choreography, presentation?

- You are right, in many ways everything comes down to jumping. But there is no such thing like the second assessment was canceled. There are no empty programs now, there are no simple jump approaches either. Everyone is looking for a new element, a special transition, a unique feature. If asses them like that, all programs are rich. This isn't like ten years ago, when we took four to seven running steps for the sake of a quad Toeloop. Times have changed, the generation of children has changed. And they are more adapted to these work orders.

-- I managed to see men's competitions, in whom did they see future champions? Maybe someone besides champion Daniil Samsonov will highlight?

- I watched the mens singles as soon as there was an opportunity. Petya Gumennik has a very strong program, there are no empty spaces, he owns quad Salchow's, there is a video of how he jumps a quad Lutz, he seems to have the Toeloop. But I heard that he had an injury. But even what he showed here is already a good skating run. Triple Axels from straight off a “boat”, Lutz's with hands over the head, that is, the full range of what figure skating is under the current rules. And the goal now is to fill the program as much as possible. He does it. Andrey Mozalyov also has a strong program, quadruples from simple approaches, but triples from a “boat”, each element with some kind of hook, bounce, “swallow” on a turn. It is adapted to the new system, there is intense movement of arms and legs. Although the first day it really didn't work out.

Zhenya Semyonenko was injured for a long time, but managed to cope with his excitement. He skated off a clean short program, a quadruple Salchow, showed a Toeloop, though only at a warm-up, and fell in the actual skating run. Now everyone has changed so much that you look at one, the second - and all are good. You just need to wait for the moment when they grow up and will perfectly master everything, and after that you can increase the second rating.

But Hanyu and Chen are cosmic now, before Beijing our single skaters can’t catch up with them?

- There is still time left before Beijing, but you need to look at the picture as a whole, what to strive for. Catching them, looking at them, is easier than running away. Let's remember Nathan a few years ago, when he only tried all quads in one program, he was lying. Let's be honest - he almost did not get up, only dropped. Several seasons passed - he managed, once - and already all fours were under his command. Need experience. You can’t jump from the floundering bay with one quadruple. Once luck can help, but in general, your base and experience decides. Yuzuru already how many years without failure? And still every year he goes forward, it is amazing. We should take our example from this.

Tutberidze and her Super Triumph. How long did it take to get there

Eteri Tutberidze set a unique achievement in terms of the number of pupils at the main starts of the season - seven. This has never been achieved before by any specialist. Team Russia recalls the difficult path of this coach.

According to the results of the country's Junior Championship, four students of Eteri Tutberidze: Kamila Valiyeva, Dar'ya Usachyova, Maya Khromykh and Daniil Samsonov, will go to the World Championship among juniors at once. And three of her pupils - Alyona Kostornaya, Anna Scherbakova and Aleksandra Trusova - after taking the entire podium of the senior European Vhampionship, will also go to the World Championship in Montreal together.

And this despite the fact that, taking into account the current Olympic Champion Alina Zagitova, four of her pupils started the season in seniors at once. In addition, the students of Tutberidze won all the stages of the Grand Prix and occupied the entire podium in the series finale. And among the six best skaters at the junior Championship of Russia there were immediately five skaters from the Tutberidze group, one of whom, 12-year-old Sof'ya Akat'yeva, already mastered the triple Axel and quadruple Toeloop.

The coach went step by step to the current dominance. Team Russia recalls the path of Eteri Tutberidze.

Seasons-2009/10-2010/11. Debut at junior top level with Shyelepen

The 2009/10 season was the moment when Eteri Tutberidze first made her first international appearance as a promising Moscow coach. One of her first students, 14-year-old Polina Shyelepen, received the right to debut at the international junior level that season and immediately showed results: two victories at the stages of the Junior Grand Prix series, Silver in the series finals, third place at the Junior Championships and a long-awaited debut at the World Junior Championships. True, Tutberidze’s student failed to win the medal right away - Shyelepen stayed 4 points short of Bronze, which was won by another Polina, with the surname Agafonova - a failure in her short program cost her dearly.

Shyelepen became third at the 2008 Junior National Championships, however, due to her young age she could not take part in international junior competitions. The 2010/11 season was mixed for Tutberidze's most famous student of that time. Fifth place in the junior final of the Grand Prix, second in the National Championship among juniors, but only seventh in the World Championship in the same age category. That tournament was a triumph for students of other coaches - future Olympic champion Adelina Sotnikova and 2015 World Champion Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva, who won Gold and Silver, respectively. By age, Shyelepen could have claimed to be in the country's senior team that season, however, she became only seventh in the Russian qualifying championship.

Season 2011/12. Big but so far junior victories with Lipnitskaya and the first drama over leaving of a student

Season 2011/12 marked the beginning of Tutberidze’s dominance in women's single skating. At the international junior level, in addition to Shyelepen, another of her students, Yuliya Lipnitskaya, got the right to compete. The 13-year-old skater immediately won two junior stages of the Grand Prix, the series finale in Beijing (Shyelepen took the second place), and Tutberidze was one of the tournament's triumphs. A trainer who trained two top-level skaters at once.

At the senior Championships of Russia, Lipnitskaya became second, but she could not go to the European and World championships by age. Shyelepen at that tournament took 10th place, which was an outright failure for her. After this, the paths of rival classmates diverged. Lipnitskaya won the junior National Championship, later adding to this the victory at the junior World Championship - the first for herself and her coach.

Shyelepen, fought until the last for a ticket to the senior World Championships, she became second in the junior National Championships, sixth in the World Championship, she won the Student Spartakiad, but the choice was made in favour of Kseniya Makarova. This finally broke the already difficult relationship with Tutberidze and prompted Shyelepen to leave. The skater left her first coach without even saying goodbye, finding the courage to meet and discuss everything only a few years later.

Season 2012/13. Year of Pre-Olympic Alarms

The 2012/13 season was less successful for Tutberidze against the backdrop of the successes of the previous season - there were no athletes for the senior team in her group, except Shyelepen, who left, and the main star and Olympic hope Lipnitskaya began to accumulate injuries. Yuliya managed to qualify for the senior final of the Grand Prix, but missed it due to injury, as she did the senior National Championships. At the junior Championship of Russia, she became only fifth, and at the junior World Championship - second, losing to the younger compatriot Yelena Radionova. However, the main battle - pre-Olympic, was ahead.

Season 2013/14. Olympic fireworks and breakthrough on all fronts

The first part of the Olympic season 2013/14 for Tutberidze and Lipnitskaya became a real test of endurance. Both the coach and the figure skater along with her mother literally lived on the idea of getting into Sochi-2014, where Russia had only two quotas in women's single skating. They were claimed by the three-time then champion of Russia Sotnikova and 2013 National Champion Tuktamysheva. Lipnitskaya and Tutberidze went straight ahead - two victories at the Grand Prix stages, Silver in the series finals and the National Championship. And finally, a nervous but bright point in the selection - winning the European Championship.

And then there are real miracles: two impeccable skating runs in the Sochi 2014 team tournament, Olympic Gold and universal recognition and adoration, which were not affected even by the fifth place in a personal tournament - the aftertaste from it was erased by the Silver of the post-Olympic World Championship in Saitama. The whole world now spoke of Tutberidze.

Against the backdrop of the Sochi extravaganza with Lipnitskaya, other, equally important successes of the Tutberidze group remained in the shadow. For the first time in the men's European Championship tournament, her figure skater, Sergey Voronov, took Silver. At the same time, her pupils also worthily performed at the junior level - Yevgeniya Medvyedeva won the Bronze medal of the Junior Grand Prix finals and the World Junior Championships, and Adyan Pitkeyev won Silver in the same tournaments.

Season 2014/15. The post-Olympic collapse of Lipnitskaya and the rise of Medvyedeva

Season 2014/15 became for Tutberidze a completely new and at the same time difficult experience in her coaching career. The coach had to understand how to return a pupil to normal routine work after a hurricane like the Sochi Olympics, and at the same time again embark on the warpath with the main enemy of all single skaters - growing up. This turned out to be a difficult task: Lipnitskaya, even with unsuccessful performances, was able to qualify for the Grand Prix finals, but there she took only the penultimate, fifth place, and became eighth in the Russian Championship without getting into the national team.

In other areas, Tutberidze kept her position: in the junior final of the Grand Prix, her students Medvyedeva and Serafima Sakhanovich became the best, repeating this success at the junior World Championship of 2015, and Voronov won Bronze in the final of the Grand Prix, which became the first medal of a Russian singles male at the tournament since 2004. There was also Bronze at the European Championships, which allowed him to qualify for the World Championships. Another student of Tutberidze, Pitkeyev, was third in the senior National Championship, seventh in the European Championship and fifth in the world Junior Championship.

Season 2015/16. Triumph of Medvedeva and farewell to Lipnitskaya

The first part of the 2015/16 season for Tutberidze was overshadowed by the departure of Lipnitskaya, but the coach’s position in women's single skating was only strengthened. As a debutant in the seniors, 15-year-old Medvyedeva became the winner of all the major tournaments - the Grand Prix finals, the Championships of Russia, Europe and the World. Before Yevgeniya, no other Russian has had such a start of her senior career.

And at the junior level that season Polina Tsurskaya shone, who won the Junior Grand Prix finals, the Russian Championship among juniors and the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2016 in Lillehammer, although she failed to compete in the junior World Championship that season because of injuries.

Season 2016/17. New heights with Medvedeva and Zagitova's metamorphosis

In the 2016/17 season, all the main titles of the season in women's single skating again fell into the hands of Tutberidze and Medvyedeva, and Yevgeniya managed to renew world records and gain a couple of victories - at the Russian and European championships with extra jumps in the free program, her technique was greatly superior. Tsurskaya continued to struggle with injuries, but at the same time she remained in the leaders among the juniors - she won two stages of the junior Grand Prix, but withdrew from the final of the series. At the junior Championship of Russia she became third, but at the junior World Championship she finished only in tenth.

However, Tutberidze at the junior level lit up a new star - the future Olympic Champion Alina Zagitova. Although her ninth place in the junior Championship of Russia in 2016 did not look promising. But the figure skater won the junior Grand Prix final, immediately took second place in the National Championship, outperforming even Medvyedeva in technique, and then became the World Champion among juniors. This rapid rise of Zagitova in such a short time was the real revelation from Tutberidze.

Season 2017/18. Triumphal Pyeongchang-2018 and the beginning of total dominance

The 2017/18 Olympic season for Tutberidze was not only the anticipation of the upcoming confrontation between Zagitova and Medvyedeva in Pyeongchang, as a result of which the Gold and Silver of the women's tournament were claimed, but also with other indicators of the productivity of her team. Firstly, for the first time at senior level, three of her students competed at once, taking into account Tsurskaya. Moreover, Polina fought for the Olympic ticket to the last - after her short program at the qualifying Championship of Russia, she was in third, but a failure in her arbitrary threw her to the final fifth place.

Secondly, four pupils of Tutberidze at the same time - Aleksandra Trusova, Alyona Kostornaya, Anastasiya Tarakanova and Dar'ya Panenkova - were selected for the junior Grand Prix final, which was a unique achievement for the coach, and the tournament's podium also consisted of her wards. And this result was achieved despite the fact that another student of Tutberidze, Anna Shcherbakova, was forced to miss the season due to a leg injury. And here it was not without a new metamorphosis - this time with Kostornaya. The skater came to Tutberidze before the start of the season, taking 16th place out of 18 at the junior Championship of Russia, and eventually became one of the best juniors in the world.

Tutberidze even after all the vicissitudes of Pyeongchang-2018 managed to surprise for real. At the Junior World Championships of 2018, Trusova created a revolution in women's single skating, the first in the women to jump quadruple Salchov and Toeloop in the free program, Kostornaya became second in the same program. At the same time, Tutberidze celebrated the victory in the youth competition, where her student Alexey Yerokhov won.

However, the Gold and Silver of the women's tournament in Pyeongchang, which delighted the whole country, became a real test for Tutberidze and the specialists of her team Sergey Dudakov and Daniil Gleikhengauz. The whole essence of the Olympic tournament came down to the Zagitova-Medvyedeva confrontation. Despite the fact that according to the level of technique, Yevgeniya did not leave anyone a chance for two seasons in a row and was clearly preparing to win the main victory in her career. But technically stronger, with more difficult jumps in the second half of the program, was her rinkmate Zagitova. Medvyedeva’s attempt to complicate did not lead to anything — Ilya Averbukh’s new program, in which she felt uncertainly, had to be abandoned, as well as the increased difficulty. But this didn’t save the skater either: a stress fracture made her say goodbye to the Grand Prix finals and the Russian Championship.

The Moscow European Championship was the real “X” hour: even after her injury, Medvyedeva had a real chance to turn the situation in her favour. Zagitova, even taking into account the strong free program, was constantly having errors in her short and didn't get the points. But in Moscow, Alina won and became the main favourite of the upcoming Olympics. Medvyedeva made only a couple of small errors, but she looked heavy. What efforts the coaches and figure skater made to reach the level of Pyeongchang, where she did not make a single mistake, one can only guess. The fate of the Olympic gold was decided by 1.3 points - the advantages of Zagitova after a short program, the most difficult in the world at that time. Hence the tears immediately after the end of her free program - it’s hard to hold them back when your road has been 10 years long — and it was exactly this long work with Tutberidze that did not lead to the desired result. At the post-Olympic events, the girls tried to maintain a friendly atmosphere, but the world of figure skating was split into two parts: they were happy for Zagitova and pitied Medvyedeva.

The duel could continue at the World Championships in Milan, but Medveydev withdrew from it because of an injury, and Zagitova failed to repeat the Olympic extravaganza - she practically ruined her free program and took fifth place - now she had to cry from disappointment. And after that, thunder struck in late April - Medvyedeva announced her departure from Tutberidze. This immediately raised a wave of criticism towards the coach: they say that she can only work with young skaters and generally operates a ruthless conveyor. In the post-Olympic season, the coach had to prove the opposite.

Season 2018/19. The first Russian Golden Helmet in women's skating and the formation of the "TShchK triarchy"

After the triumphant Olympics, the coach seemed to have returned to the same situation like four years previously. One of her pupils, Medvyedeva, decided to leave, and the other pupil, Zagitova, after personal Olympic gold needed to be set up for further work. Moreover, at first it seemed that Tutberidze had succeeded - Alina won the tournament in Oberstdorf with impeccable skating runs, then both of her Grand Prix stages, she became the second in the series finale. However, at the championships of Russia and Europe, the skater had breaks in her free program, eventually becoming fifth and second, respectively.

Even to the surprise of many, Zagitova nevertheless went to the World Championships, which she won in brilliant style, becoming the first Russian winner of the Golden Helmet in women's single skating. And the second place in the tournament was taken by another ward of Tutberidze - the representative of Kazakhstan, Elisabet Tursynbaeva, who became the first figure skater to perform the quadruple salchow in senior competitions.

The real highlight of the junior season 2018/19 was the return of Shcherbakova after an injury and the formation of a super-triade with Trusova and Kostornaya, who won all six stages of the Junior Grand Prix series, took two first places on the podium of the series finals and the entire podium of the Russian Championship. In the Grand Prix finals, Shcherbakova turned out to remain outside the prizes, while at the National Championship, on the contrary, she celebrated her victory.

The girls took three first places in the junior Championship of Russia, however, only Alexandra and Anna got to go to the junior World Championship, Alyona remained behind because of an injury. However, the women's tournament there still remained unique, since Trusova and Shcherbakova both performed quadruple jumps in their free programs.

Last season, the Tutberidze team took a step toward returning to men's skating - the junior Championship was won by 13-year-old Daniil Samsonov, who by age did not yet have the right to participate in the junior World Championship.

However, the season 2019/20, in addition to the unconditional triumph in women's skating, prepared another test for the coach - how to lead four students in the seniors, when there are only three places on the podium? Moreover, the debutants of the senior season Kostornaya, Shcherbakova and Trusova are technically stronger than the Olympic Champion and superstar Zagitova. They managed to keep the balance only during the Grand Prix series - in the final, Alina messed up her free program and finished last. Then on a prime time broadcast of Channel One thunder struck akin to the leaving of Medvyedeva - Zagitova announced a suspension of her career. This news caused serious resonance in the world of figure skating and even led to an extramural conflict between the headquarters of Tutberidze and two-time Olympic champion Yevgeniy Plyushchenko and merited trainer of the USSR Tat'yana Tarasova. Gradually, emotions calmed down again, but it is obvious that if Zagitova does not return to the competitive ice, Tutberidze will again be blamed for the fragility of her champions.

TV Asahi (Japan): “ Zagitova is 'special' with us. ” Interview with the coach Eteri Tutberidze, who is building her “figure skating empire”.

Eteri Tutberidze, who raised Olympic Champion Alina Zagitova and many other champions. A trainer called the Iron Lady, who almost never praises her students and leads them with a firm hand

The school of the Olympic Reserve of Russia under the name "Sambo 70" was created back in socialist times. Back then a lot of government attention was paid to combative sports. Today, Sambo 70 has become a powerful multidisciplinary methodological education and training base. It raised athletes of the Olympic Reserve in 24 sports. The school has a strong presence in figure skating, led by the famous Russian coach Eteri Tutberidze and in which about 700 young and teenage skaters are training now. Yevgeniya Medvyedeva and Alina Zagitova began their careers at this school. Here, Alyona Kostornaya, Aleksandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova, who took the entire podium at the 2019 World Championships and the Finals Grand Prix of Figure Skating, entered the world of great figure skating.

Japanese correspondents talk with Eteri Tutberidze.

-- Please, explain to us why one after another champions emerge from your figure skating school “Sambo 70”?

- Many people say that the best and most capable skaters gather at the Sambo 70 school. However, one must immediately say that athletes who have already known success rarely come here. Here, girls just grow up to become successful skaters.

Personally, I most of all like to take in athletes who are “close to despair”.

Why? Because it is precisely the “desperate” skaters who seriously want to change their lives, and who work with startling seriousness.

-- And what is the secret of nurturing the spirit and strength of athletes who were close to despair?

- Probably this secret is me (laughs). My colleagues and I have been training elite athletes for many years in a team environment. All my skaters are different people. Each has their own distinctive features. For example, Sasha Trusova loves to fight with records. From ordinary tasks, she becomes bored, so I always set her elevated goals.

-- By what parameters do you select your students?

- All the skaters who come to me, I immediately lead them to the ice. There, my inner feeling is the decisive factor. If I don’t feel any kind of “bell” in me, then most likely I will take another student. And looking at the skating girl, I begin to ask myself the questions: “Can I love her?”, “Can I understand her?” And in accordance with the answers that appear in me, I decide whether to accept the new skater in my team or not.

I’m not even satisfied with the work of my „three beautiful girls”

-- Your students literally occupied the podium at the final of last year's Grand Prix and at the European Championship. Do you feel satisfied as a coach in this regard?

- No, I'm not satisfied. Because none of them managed to skate out all their programs without remarks from me. One of the reasons for this is that in the conditions of a busy training regimen my girls do not have enough time to prepare these programs.

-- But the whole team of the “Eteri group” took all the medals - Gold, Silver and Bronze. Kostornaya, Trusova, Shcherbakova. Please tell us about the strengths of each of these athletes.

- They are all different in nature. For example, in Sasha (Trusova), her character is closer to male. She is completely unhappy with her skating. Alyona (Kostornaya) is a real girl with a girlish character. She is at the same time crying and angry with herself. And Anya (Shcherbakova) loves figure skating more than anything else.

I still do not fully understand how my girls will develop and grow as athletes. They now need to get used to concepts such as "name" and "sports authority." This means that they need to learn to win and win medals regularly, as a stable athlete should.

As for “queen” Zagitova, at the very beginning I did not see her exceptional talent

-- What was your impression of Alina Zagitova at your first meeting?

- At first, I thought that she was “good material” to later turn into a strong skater. It was immediately noticeable.

In addition, I immediately felt that this girl wanted to understand me. Therefore, I immediately said yes.

At this stage, we all perceived her as "special."

-- How old was she then?

- I don’t remember exactly now. In my opinion, about 12 years.

-- What was Alina then? Did you already see glimpses of talent in her?

- At first, I did not have the feeling that Alina had ingenious abilities. She had secondary skating, of the jumps in her arsenal, perhaps, there were only “Rittbergers”.

However, in her eyes I read a prayer: “Help me.” At that time, she was just in such a state of 'despair'.

-- So you didn’t find any special talent in her then?

- What can I say? She was very pretty, very flexible.

-- They say there was a time when you expelled her from the group of your students. Could you talk about the reasons for this?

- There was a period when Alina, having gotten into my team, apparently began to think: 'Sooner or later, someday I will become a star. You can calm down.' She somehow began to devote a lot of time to everyday life and ordinary life. Apparently, she really calmed down.

In such periods, the athlete ceases to educate herself at her best, she ceases to throw bold challenges at herself.

If the skater herself does not apply all her strength to her athletic growth, then she will not achieve anything big. And if she does not understand the trainer's warnings, then the day may come when she will be told: "Goodbye."

-- What is the philosophy of your work as a coach? What is your main motto?

- I cannot tell you specifically what they are. Sometimes, suddenly, under the influence of somehow especially prevailing conditions, you begin to make every effort to ensure that this day becomes the most useful for the athlete.

“Living the days with the maximum benefit for business.”
“To give all your strength every single day.”
“Do not put off anything until tomorrow."

This is the philosophy of my work.

It is unfortunate that there is no Russian original. In fact, there was such a chain of "broken telephone" - Eteri spoke Russian, then it was translated into Japanese, then it was translated back into Russian, and now Edwin translated it into English

I suppose it was a transcript from the interviews with EG by Asahi TV for their Zagitova documentary. The original Russian is heavily dubbed over, but given what I have learned about Eteri Georgiyevna and The Tutberidze Effect, the transcript came over to me as genuine and sincere.

Eteri Georgiyevna must feel very lonely often, perched at the top of this golden cage, unable to speak out her inner thoughts. Everything has to be filtered to avoid any controversy or worse, abuse of her words.

People like you and Edwin make this forum a great place, especially for people like me that can't speak russian but are fans of russian skaters.
Thanks you

No problem:) First of all, I sincerely want to share the positive. I always imagine that, for example, Alyona with her squeaky cartoon voice speaks a completely unfamiliar language, something like:

- Ribbolakuane, forasiam piune. Sasha kilope nukte! Kilope nukte!

And I feel very sorry for myself - I don't want to miss one single word that says Alenochka  But for most of strangers, the Russian language sounds like this (maybe the сzech flanker sometimes understands some simple words). So... I wanna help :)

Second (here little bit about politics, sorry:)) I can't help but notice that foreigners have a lot of stereotypes about us (especially Westerners). Sting sang "I hope the Russians love their children too", and I'm trying to convince people that "yes, we are". You will say - "well, now is not the Cold War". Yes, of course, but.. I have more than once or twice had the feeling that poster thinks (maybe even unconsciously) something like "well, it's the Russians - for sure, poor children are taken from their parents, taken away from their native village, and given to cruel Eteri that torments them with hunger and cruel training...", " What??? Alena Kostornaya's mother is present at every training session? Seriously? But... But.. It's probably not true and I'll forget about it immediately"

The task of progressive humanity is to learn to understand each other. And sports help this, especially sports like figure skating. And I try to help fulfill this great goal to the extent of my weak ant strength :)

The sound of Aliona talking at 250 KPH has is own musicality :dance3:
Understanding cames later

Well during the cold war they use to say communist eat children.
So we are making progress you see?! :laugh2:

I had myself the impression that someone thinks Eteri is Baba Yaga in disguise

Traveling and meeting people from everywhere really opens your mind.
Sport can do a lot, and I'm happy this girls have the chance to see many places.
I know they have little free time, but they key is not to be tourists but to deal with locals for everyday little things.

I wonder how you know the character of Russian fairy tales? :)

I read a lot of Baba Yaga stories growing up. I loved how she had a house with chicken legs so that any time she wanted to move, she and her house would walk away. It was a great illustration.

If only I could speak Russian...

In the original version, other semantic accents (if you're talking about this).

-- When you first met her, you had this contact - that "you will love her"? What happened when she came to you?
- The first thing I saw that she is a very pretty girl, that is, she is built well and I can start with this. I knew that she would grow into a very beautiful girl. Second, I saw those eyes, that she was trying to "get a look at me", "catch on to me"

-- Did you see her talent, the makings of abilities? Answer honestly, please.
- No-no, I can't say that I saw anything so special. On the contrary, she was very weak in skating. Of all the jumps, she had a triple rittberger (3Lo), nothing else. But in fact, rittberger is a good base jump. You know, I even watched a video of her previous skates - "how good she skate?" to be honest (laughs) - not too much good. But she had a rittberger. It was possible to understand that to this rittberger could be "attached" other elements (if she would listen to me and work). Well, again - those eyes that tried to catch on to me, says "help me". It was just an athlete who was "a little desperate", but "a little", not completely (laughs)

-- Okay, so there were no special talents other than rittberger...
- She was pretty, well-built. Listen, there is a concept of "feeling of a pose", when an athlete naturally does a certain pose and it is beautiful. The opposite situation is when you need to "build an athlete", because it, despite all his efforts, does not feel his body does not understand what to do to make it look beautiful. But she had a "feeling of a pose"

Or, when Eteri explains why she expelled Alina she says that in a situation where a family from the province spends a lot of money on renting an apartment in Moscow, when a girl lives far away from her family, she(Etery) has a great responsibility. That's why she had to make such a tough decision and expelled Alina from the group after warning. Where did the Japanese get the phrase " She (Alina) somehow began to devote a lot of time to everyday life and ordinary life. "- a riddle for me, it does not sound there.

Many on Twitter are angry at such a "translation".

Eteri Georgievna posted this video on her instagram and wrote

"Часть интервью с Асахи TV.
Lost in translation /

Part of an interview with Asahi TV.
Lost in translation
I read supposedly "my interviews" and I just wonder.
Is it really impossible to translate properly, so that the essence of what was said is not distorted?
This is the reason why I don't want to talk to the media.

Eteri Tutberidze - sets trends and trains champions

Eteri Tutberidze does not need to be introduced - on her account are two Olympic champions, two World champions, four European champions, record holders and simply wonderful athletes who were and are among the leaders of both the senior and junior national teams.

At the same time, despite the huge popularity both in Russia and abroad, about Tutberidze’s personal life is known exactly as much as she herself tells, and she doesn’t tell much, but the results of her athletes speak louder than any words.

Eteri Georgiyevna was born in Moscow as the fifth child in a large Georgian family, she has a brother and three sisters. At the age of 4.5 years, Tutberidze started figure skating at the Stadium of Young Pioneers, her first coach was Yevgeniya Zelikova, then she was coached by Edvard Pliner.

Tutberidze repeatedly said that Pliner could explain a complex element in a few words in the way that others couldn't using dozens of sentences. And the wards of such trainers failed more than once, they despaired of failing to achieve what they wanted, and Edvard Georgiyevich came up, whispered, turned his shoulder, leveled his back with his hand - and even the most difficult element became obvious and doable.

Soon Tutberidze realised that the single skating for her was over and tried herself in ice dance - her trainers were Lidiya Kabanova, Yelena Tchaikovskaya, Natal'ya Linichuk, Gennady Akkerman, Tat'yana Tarasova. Tutberidze performed with Vyacheslav Chichekin, Alexey Kilyakov and other partners.

But soon Tutberidze left professional sports, in the early 1990s she performed in the Russian ballet on ice. At the age of 18, Eteri Georgiyevna came to the United States to work on the Ice Capades ice show, but as a result of overlapping passports for individual ballet participants, her contract in the USA was terminated and Tutberidze ended up in America without money and work, she survived the attack in Oklahoma of April 19, 1995.

In 1994-1998, Tutberidze worked as a trainer in the United States, then returned to Russia, where she began her coaching career. First she worked with wellness groups on inflatable ice rinks in an ice circus - the only place where she managed to find work after failure in all places where she tried to get a job, however, over time, she managed to get a trainer position in Zelenograd, and later on at the Serebryaniy skating rink.

From 2013 to the present, Tutberidze is the head coach of the Khrustalniy department of the Sambo-70 Sports and Education Center, and in 2013, the golden era of Eteri Tutberidze and her students began.

Sergey Dudakov: “ She always works. She wants to be the best in her profession. I see it every day. Since 2011, from the moment I started working with this group. There has never been an occasion that Eteri Georgiyevna didn't come to training. She is always at work, she can come to the rink right from the airport with her suitcase. She’s always fully invested in the job. For her children - for the athletes. And she always fights for them. "

Daniil Samsonov: “Eteri Georgiyevna doesn't set us a task for every start. She knows that I can do a lot. I set myself the task of showing clean skating. So that they can count on me in the future. Eteri Georgiyevna is not strict, she is demanding. She wants, so that we show our maximum. "

Elisabet Tursynbayeva: “She is very demanding and strict on the ice. Eteri Georgiyevna notices every detail, which helps to progress. There are coaches who always praise, admire, I think this is not good. Eteri Georgiyevna is somewhere strict, somewhere she jokes. She’s the perfect balance of a strict, demanding coach and a person with good personal qualities who will support you in difficult times. We have more respectful than friendly relations. In general, it seems to me that a coach-friend is bad for an athlete. Strictness on ice helps you to progress. "

Alyona Kostornaya: “When Eteri Georgiyevna comes on the ice - it’s maximum concentration, maximum intensity. She desires to make her athletes better. But in life, this is a woman who has experienced a lot, coped with all difficulties. Stronger a person both in spirit and physically, it seems to me, I haven’t met. Any athlete from our group would like to grow into the same person as Eteri Georgiyevna in the future. We try to do better, try to do more, because we understand that this is both our life and the life of our coaches.

We are called Students of Tutberidze. This is also a kind of title. Because not every athlete can get here, not everyone can train here. You must believe in yourself, especially in those moments when no one believes in you. There was this moment before getting to Eteri Georgiyevna: I’ve never been on the podium of major tournaments, they always told me that I won’t get there, I will remain behind the top ten, I am only average. And at that moment I realised that I could, I wanted to win. Then I went to Eteri Georgiyevna and proved to many that everything can be changed. "

Alina Zagitova: “ Once on my assessment, Eteri Georgiyevna saw the potential in me and pulled under her wing. It was the decisive moment of my career as a skater. I can’t imagine my sporting path without Eteri Georgiyevna - she is my mentor in sports and in life. I will always remain grateful to her for this. We interact with Eteri Georgiyevna, Daniil Markovich and Sergey Viktorovich every day. And we win all victories together. I would definitely not have achieved such heights. I really love my team. "

Congratulations on your Happy Birthday! Happiness, love, overcoming all obstacles and further success!
