Mmmm. Right thing to do, but the wrong place to do it.

You know the way I didn't watch the first 2 Senior GP's at the time. Well, the past couple of weeks I have been trying to catch up on them.

Last week, I watched Skate America in the days leading up to the Trophée de France. And I was annoyed that as you were scrolling through the videos to find the archived stream, you couldn't avoid seeing who finished in the Top 3 of each of the segments, because they were only cutting individual videos for the Top 3 finishers.

This week, I was trying to get watch Skate Canada watched in the days leading up to the Cup Of China (I didn't succeed, due to other things getting in the way). And despite it being only 2 weeks ago, it was a nightmare trying to find the archived streams. As well as the results giveaway videos, I was having to deal with speed skating videos as well. And then this morning when I went to watch the Pairs SP before the LIVE stuff from Chongqing came on, there were old videos to scroll past as well!

Apart from anything else, the way these old videos are being uploaded means that they are out of sequence, mixed up in between modern stuff. So, if you are going to be looking for something specific, it's going to be a nightmare to find it.

No, the ISU should be building an archive library on their own website rather than on YouTube. That way, it could be structured and everything properly organised. And it would have the benefit of not being under constant threat from the copyright police.

Hey, if they did everything in-house on their own website, they might even be able to keep better controls on the geo-blocking. (I feel so sorry for our Aussie friends, and all the confusion they are having to deal with).

What the ISU are doing at the moment on YouTube is a total and utter mess. In fact, I would go as far as to say that it is a shambles. And it does not reflect well on an organisation that is supposed to be running a number of sports.

CaroLiza_fan

The ISU posts the streams on their youtube channel a few hours before each event. So you can try putting them on Watch Later (yes that thing people don't really use but should), so the next time you pull up youtube, you can go straight to your Watch Later playlist and click the now-archived stream without having to go through spoilers or speed skating.

Watching the YouTube stream, I really begin to miss Simon Reed and Nicky's banter on Eurosport.

^^^ I was re-watching the Ladies from the World Champs last night and you could tell they, Simon and Chris had no idea what was coming i.e. loss of Eurosport, they were really looking forward to seeing some of the skaters this season.

Sadly though it looks as if Eurosport has moved on – N.B. I note that Germany, Austria and Switzerland have been added to the list of ISU countries that will now have TV coverage, plus they should have live streaming tomorrow as well. However if not last minute Australia type emails might be required, given the comments of some Australians on here. https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/...f-figure-skating-series-2019?templateParam=15

However back to Eurosport, it looks as if it might have been decided some time ago. For example they’re showing Davis Cup all this week which knocks out one channel, plus they’ve also been showing something called the International Swimming League (sponsored by a Russian billionaire no less – why couldn’t it have been skating?!) which overlaps a lot with the Grand Prix series, so I can’t see any way back, though funnily enough due to the lack of live sport they could easily have shown all of IDF, CoC and Rostelecom live, but the other 3 weekends no.

Let’s hope something might happen for the Championships – there’s still about 15 European countries that had TV coverage that no longer have it.

Talking of which watch out for live streams being blocked then. So far there’s been 4 (out of 45 segments/Galas) but for the Junior Grand Prix with a lot more skaters, there was a lot more, plus they’ve only been cutting 3 performances from the top 3 rather than all the skaters. People may need to get organised, especially for the World Champs where anything in the evening Canada time will be middle of the night European.

I’ve also been looking at some figures to see how the ISU Youtube channel has been going.

So far the number of subscribers has gone up from 70,000 to just under 90,000 which is good.

However it looks as if the number of viewers has peaked.

Figures went up in the early weeks, presumably as people discovered the ISU channel, but now they’ve fallen slightly. E.g. Figures for Ladies are 14,000 Canada SP (was afternoon Canada time/evening European), 20,000/22,000 IDF, SP and LP respectively, at same time of day, and 16,000/21,000 Rostelecom, similarly.

Figures for men are 10,000/12,000 IDF and 8,600/10,500 Rostelecom which gives some idea of the respective popularities of Men’s and Ladies. Figure for Pairs at Rostelecom were 6,000/7,000 which yet again gives some ideas of the popularity of that discipline with regards the others.

Also it was noteworthy how the figures were lower for CoC due to the time difference – this was morning time Europe (people at work during the day, plus getting organised in the morning, plus in the night North America – I imagine a fair few people were watching the ISU’s channel via VPNs). Figures were 9,000/12,000 for Ladies and 5,000/6,000 for Men. I suspect the ISU is not going to be too thrilled with these figures, I imagine they were hoping for more. Hopefully they’ll realise they need some sort of commentator going forward – it will be interesting to see the NHK figurers, but with that sort of number I’m not so sure, and especially as the list of countries with TV coverage continues to increase e.g. Poland was also added last week or the week before.

ETA - Results for today's NHK SPs were kind of interesting. Ladies were good, 13,000 viewers max, down on Rostelecom, but more than 1.5 times better than CoC in a directly comparable time zone. However it was probably the most attractive GP to skating fans so far, what with Rika Kihira, Alena Kostornaia and Alina Zagitova all competing.

Also the Men's was even better, 12,500, more than any of the previous 3 events (I haven't got figures for Skate Canada where Yuzuru Hanyu last competed), and 2.5 times that of the directly comparable CoC. And I would have to put it all down to the 'Yuzuru Effect' - as soon as he finished skating the figures dropped dramatically, down to 9,000 by the time Alexei Bychenko finished, so it really shows the effect Yuzuru has on the figures - in all the other GPs figures didn't drop until the event was over, presumably because the last skater was very strong also.

Hurrah! The ISU's Youtube channel is going to have commentary (in English) for the first time for the Senior GPF - would have been a bit bizarre for it not to be there, and there for the JGPF, but good news nonetheless. https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/...f-figure-skating-series-2019?templateParam=15

Also looks like there’s no new countries this week :(, plus looks like Australia won't get the livestream - there's no * next to SBS.

I do this and it works really well (I also save a shortcut straight to my watch later list so I don't have to click past anything to get to it). I just wanted to add, also add an extra video at the end of your watch later. Youtube always recommends something for you to watch next if you don't have anything queued after the video you're watching (at least it does on my phone and the PS4 app that I use for the TV) - during NHK, I paused to make a drink and the next recommended video showed - it was Hanyu's winning performance with his score in the title. I was quite annoyed after making it almost to the end of the whole event without any spoilers!!!

I'm guessing Ted Barton. Not happy about that.

Ted just told us at the start of the Junior Pairs SP that it's going to be Chris Howarth commentating on the Seniors.

It'll be great to hear one of the dream team again!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

It's just a real pity that Simon and / or Nicky won't be there with him too... :disapp:

Okay but which one is Chris  I only know them by their voices

Who knows, maybe it'll be a youtube stream with the b.esp guys commentating.
Somehow, I was right!

Simon is the enthusiastic fan with the lower voice. Nicky is the Ice Dancer with the slightly sharper voice. And Chris is the Men's Singles skater that is left.

That's the best way I can think of describing which is which.

Probably easier to just watch this video that Nicky recorded of him and Chris at 2011 Euros:

Hope this helps

I found that out this morning.

Thing is SBS doesn't seem to be showing the skating :( I'm certain they used to start their weekly highlights shows before December in recent years, but looking up the guide on Saturdays shows no signs of skating being shown.

SBS is letting us down here!

They did used to, and they were planning to this year once they got the deal worked out, but it's not them letting us down. According to the customer service person I was in contact with a while back, there's been a technical hitch - they can't play or broadcast the files the ISU sent them due to some sort of incompatibility. They were hoping to get a fix in place, but clearly it hasn't been worked out yet.

It is good having commentary on the GPF skates. Chris was jumping out of his seat over Kevin and it was such fun to listen to.

Aha! I should have known SBS wouldn't let us down.

I do have a VPN, although I was hoping to see some skates in glorious hi-def.

I'll have to rewatch the Livestream, looking forward to hearing Chris's commentary (yay, Kevin!) Although I will miss SBS man, I have a soft spot for him.

I feel so sad for our Aussies.

They really need to just let everyone watch.

I do have to disagree on the commentary thing. I don't like that Chris talks while they are skating. He can talk all he wants before and after but not while. I really like that Ted does not talk while they are skating. Please don't yell while the skaters are skating Chris. It shatters my nerves.
