The Personal Best and Season Best scores that the ISU uses for a skater only take into consideration certain competitions. For example, they do not take into consideration domestic competitions, such as Sectional, Regional or National Championships.

The table below takes into consideration all the events that the skater has taken part in. These scores are referred to as “Absolute Personal Best” and “Absolute Season’s Best” so as to distinguish them from the scores recorded by the ISU.

Absolute Personal Best Score
Absolute Season’s Best Score

The Absolute designations are based purely on the contents of the Competitive History table in this post. If anybody knows of any scores that are not in the table, please let us know, and we will be only too happy to add them in.

I've been planning this thread for absolute ages, but decided to wait until today to upload it, for reasons that are about to become apparent...

:cheer: HAPPY 21[SUP]st[/SUP] BIRTHDAY SAM!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope you are having an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice.

Since Jenna retired, you have been single-handedly keeping Northern Ireland on the international figure skating map. And you have been doing a great job at it. As a fellow Ulsterman, I am so proud of what you have been achieving.

All the best for the rest of the season.

Hi CaroLiza_Fan, do you happen to know whether Samuel McAllister is still skating?

Don't worry, it was just the strict COVID-19 restrictions in these islands which meant he wasn't competing this past season.

A few weeks ago, he posted this photo from the 2020 Irish Championships of him, his Mum and fellow NI skater Dillon Judge (who won the Junior Men's title):

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNIKYXdp1Hb/

He accompanied it with a debrief of his (non-existant) 2020-21 season, and said that he is preparing for next season.

So, all's good! :)

I see he's changed his Instagram address. So, I'll update that in the OP now.

Sam finished 11th out of 11 in the SP, with a score of 51.63.

To be honest, I didn't see much wrong with the programme to justify him being in last position.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time (just to explain the first sentence - the guy that skated before Sam, Andrii Kokura of the Ukraine, had very strange music):

What were we saying about music?

The music may not be my taste, but I really enjoyed that programme. Really fun. And he skated it well.

That said, he doesn't think so, judging by his reaction when he finished.

Don't worry, at least your Mum is sitting next to you, so you can get a hug.

Hello Margaret!

CaroLiza_fan

Even looking at the protocols doesn't enlighten me any. Those of us watching live saw that Sam had a fall on the Triple Lutz combination, but that is the only thing that stands out in the protocols. There is not a single minus elsewhere. The aforementioned Kokura had loads of minuses in his protocols. Yet he finished 2.83 points and one place ahead of Sam.

Anyway, Sam is 4.79 points behind the guy in 9th position, András Csernoch (HUN). So, he does have a chance of moving up a couple of places if he has a good Free Skate.

So, let's hope that happens.

I know Sam and the results table don't agree with me, but I'm going to say it anyway because I believe he did well.

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

The Senior Men's FS is due to start at 15:10:00 CEST (13:10:00 GMT / 14:10:00 BST). So 8 hours from now.

Sam will be the first skater to start.

He is due to start at 15:16:30 CEST (13:16:30 GMT / 14:16:30 BST). So 8h 6m from now.

Sam finished 11th out of 11 in the FS, with a score of 101.58. This meant that he stayed in 11th place overall, with a score of 153.21.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Oh dear.

I love "Pirates Of The Caribbean" programmes. So, when the music started, I was all excited. But, unfortunately, this one didn't go well.

The first half wasn't so bad. But, there were too many mistakes in the second half.

Unfortunately, the cut to the highlights very quickly after he took his bows. I wanted to see what the interaction was like between mother and son when he came off the ice.

Well, it was his first competition in nearly 2 years. So, although it didn't go well, it is a starting point to work from over the next few months.

But, get a more piratey costume for the next time! Doing so is bound to add to the interpretation score!

CaroLiza_fan

There's not really much I can add to that.

Looking at the protocols, the Triple Flip seemed to be presenting him with a problem during that programme. His first attempt was his second element, and he singled it out. He fell on his second attempt later in the programme, and this attempt also got called for an unclear edge. On top of that, two jumps got called for being landed on the quarter - the Triple Toe he did in a combo as his third element, and the Triple Flip that he fell on.

The skater who had been nearest to Sam in the SP, Andrii Kokura, had a better FS, and leap-frogged the two skaters that had been ahead of him in the SP. The result was that it was András Csernoch that finished in 10th place, 5.90 points ahead of Sam.

Whilst last place is not what Sam would have been looking for, he can take away positives. Not least that his FS score is the highest he has achieved under the +5 / -5 GOE system. And bearing in mind that the FS here wasn't great, it bodes very well for when he does do it well!

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

Like I said about Dillon after his Junior GP appearances, Sam was always going to be at a disadvantage because it is not that long since the rinks in the UK re-opened after being closed for well over a year. But, it's still early in the season, and there is plenty of time for him to work on polishing up the programmes. And as he gets more time on the ice under his belt, I can see his scores improving significantly as the season goes on.

So, here's to a more successful rest of the season!

I am so sorry. Due to spending an hour and a quarter setting up a new TV yesterday morning, I completely forgot to put up reminder posts for the Tayside Trophy Short Programmes in the Fan Fests.

Sam finished 12th out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 45.25.

To be honest, I don't think Sam did so bad. The only thing I noticed was that he had a fall on his second element, the Triple Lutz Combination. However, looking at the protocols, he landed on the wrong edge on his first element, the Triple Flip.

Although he is in last place, Sam is actually part of a very tight group of 3 skaters, all of whom had 1 fall in the SP. He is 0.30 points behind Anton Scoficz of Austria in 11th, and 1.26 points behind Miłosz Witkowski of Poland in 10th. Sam's Irish team mate Conor Stakelum is in 9th, 3.80 points ahead of Sam. But, that is probably the highest he could hope for.

The Senior Men's FS is due to start at 18:13:00 GMT. So 10 hours from now.

Sam will be the fist skater to start.

Good news! Sam will be back in action today at the 🎅 Santa Claus Cup, in Budapest.

The Senior Men's SP is due to start at 11:56 CET (10:56 GMT). So 5 hours from now.

Sam will be the 1st skater to start.

Unfortunately, there is no Time Schedule. So, we don't know the exact time Sam is due to start. But, as he is the first skater, it should be about 12:02 CET (11:02 GMT). So 5h 6m from now.

However, given how quickly the event has been getting behind schedule during the first two days, and by how much, I suspect that the segment will actually be starting later than planned.

Sam finished 6th out of 9 in the SP, with a score of 54.16.

Before I talk about Sam's programme, I first have to repeat a story of something that happened before the Junior Men's SP:

Awww That was lovely.

Before the Warm-Up started, three skaters and their coaches were standing waiting at the boards. Then, Dillon Judge and Margaret O'Neill came in through the door. And a few moments behind them came an Italian skater (presumably Gabriel RENOLDI), his coach, and Sam McAllister.

Sam picked up a bag of stuff, wished Dillon good luck, and started heading towards the door. Then he stopped, came back, gave Margaret a kiss, and left again.

You daren't forget to kiss your Mum!

CaroLiza_fan

Fast forwar to the Senior Men's SP, and here is what I wrote about Sam in the competition thread:

Stupid director!! Cutting to the corner camera when Sam was just in front of it, so that we only saw the top of his head!!!

He was doing the Triple Lutz-Triple Toe combination at the time and he might have fallen. But I'm not sure, because he was out of camera shot.

What we did see looked very good.

And now that the scores have come through, yes, he did fall.

Nevertheless, it was a very good skate. By far his best SP score since before the pandemic.

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

The protocols by-and-large agreed. There were only two elements that had minus GOE and multiple minuses from the Judges. Obviously, the combination where he fell was the most costly element. But, the following element, the Change Foot Camel Spin, also got -0.08 GOE, as well as -2 from Judge 1 and -1 from Judge 6. The other judges gave zeros.

Sam is currently 4.26 points behind 5th position, Dias JIRENBAYEV (KAZ), and 2.79 points ahead of 7th position, Douglas GERBER (NZL). And given the way they are spaced out, I doubt if there will be much change in the Free Skate. But, you never know!

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

Incidentally, Sam's team-mate from the South, Conor STAKELUM, is 1.15 points behind Gerber, who skated in Group 2. And here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the end of Group 1:

So, going into Group 2, we have an Irish 1-2, with the Northerner ahead of the Southerner.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

:cheer: WELL DONE BOYS!!! :cheer:

The Senior Men's FS is due to start at 11:14 CET (10:14 GMT). So 4 hours from now.

Sam will be the 4th skater to start. So, last skater to go in Group 1.

Unfortunately, there is no Time Schedule. So, we don't know the exact time Sam is due to start. But, as he is the fourth skater, it should be about 11:40 CET (10:40 GMT). So 4h 26m from now.

However, given how quickly the event has been getting behind schedule during the first three days, and by how much, I suspect that the group will actually be starting later than planned.

Sam finished 8th out of 9 in the FS, with a score of 99.03. This meant that he dropped to 7th place overall, with a score of 153.19.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Of course, I'm biased when it comes to Sam. And it doesn't help my biases the fact that I love "Pirates Of The Caribbean" programmes.

Apart from the fall, it didn't look bad to me.

The problem is that Sam wasn't that many points ahead of Gerber in the SP. So, after how the Kiwi did there now, it may be tough for Sam to stay ahead of him.

Awww. A supportive rub on the leg from Mummy when they were being shown in the mini-box. And another pat when the graphic showing the next group came up.

Mmmm. The camera is staying on Margaret and Sam during the Group 2 Warm-Up. They're having a right wee chin-wag. And they eventually decide to leave.

As I suspected, Gerber did do too much for Sam to stay ahead of him. Sam drops behind Conor in the FS, but remains ahead of him overall.

But, his overall score is only 0.02 points below his Season's Best overall score from the last time he was in Budapest.

Sam finished 3rd out of 9 in the SP, with a score of 60.73.

So that something I wrote after he did his programme makes sense, here is I wrote in the competition thread about the Warm-Up:

There was a bit of confusion with the graphic at the start of the Warm-Up. There were only 2 that went out onto the ice, and I could see that Sam was one of them. But, at first, the graphic said that he was the one that was missing. After a few failed attempts at fixing it, they eventually got it right.

It was actually skater #2 Albert MUCK (AUT) that was missing. So, Sam goes a bit earlier than planned.

Let's hope things go better for Sam here than they did for Elizabeth in Minsk earlier.

☘️ ALL THE BEST SAM!!! ☘️

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote about Sam's programme in the competition thread:

Thankfully, it was a lot better than Elizabeth. Sam just had the one fall, which was early on in the programme. But everything else after it looked fine to me.

Mmmm. Sam doesn't have his Mum with him today. Don't know who that coach was, but he had to rush away, so I assume he has somebody else skating in the next group. That said, he did come running back for the scores (and a hug), before rushing off again.

He scores 60.73 points, and goes into the lead, 4.38 points ahead of Valentin EISENBAUER (AUT).

And that is a new absolute PB for the Short Programme!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

It surpasses his previous highest score of 59.49 points from the 2019 Tayside Trophy by 1.24 points.

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

As you probably worked out, Elizabeth Golding had a disaster skate at the Winter Star in Minsk yesterday. Suffice to say, falls on her first 3 elements pretty much sums it up. I'd rather not dwell on it, but if you want to know more, I wrote about it in the relevant competition thread.

Thankfully, Sam fared a LOT better in Ljubljana. He does have a good track record at the Dragon Trophy, having won the Advanced Novice competition back in 2014, the first international win for a skater from Northern Ireland since Jenna McCorkell.

Looking at the Protocols, obviously the fall on his opening element, the Triple Lutz Triple Toe combination, was the most costly moment for him. Due to the fall, the Triple Toe part was under-rotated. He got -5's all round from the Judges, and a massive -2.95 in GOE. Fortunately, this was the only element that got negative GOE.

His second element, the Triple Flip, didn't have a clear edge. So, Judge 1 gave him -1, and all the other Judges gave him 0. But, he did manage to avoid getting minus GOE. Instead, he got neutral GOE.

For everything else after that, the Judges marks were mostly in the 0 to +2 range. The only excceptions to that was Judge 3, who gave him +3 for his Step Sequence; and Judge 5, who gave him +3 for his Flying Sit Spin.

He got credit for doing his Double Axel in the second half of the programme. However, whilst Judge 5 gave him +1 for it, all the others gave 0. And he got neutral GOE.

Sam is currently 2.66 points behind 2nd position, Corentin SPINAR (FRA), and 0.94 points ahead of 4th position, Michael NEUMAN (SVK). Sam is also 4.38 points ahead of 5th position, Valentin EISENBAUER (AUT). The skaters in first and last position are out of range.

So, it's going to be exciting in the Free Skate with 2nd to 5th positions up for grabs. Hopefully Sam will hang onto a podium position.

:cheer: WELL DONE SAM!!! :cheer:

Britannia International Men's SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Sam finished 3rd out of 6 in the SP, with a score of 54.50.

Unfortunately, there was no livestreaming of the Britannia International, so this analysis is based purely on the protocols.

Sam opened with a Triple Toe-Triple Toe combination. The second part was under-rotated, so it was minuses all round. -1.26 in GOE, and from the Judges one -2 and four -3's. He then did a Triple Lutz, but fell. So, -2.95 in GOE and -5 from all the Judges. He did manage to land on the quarter, though, before going down.

There was a split opinion on his third element, the Change Foot Camel Spin. Judge 1 gave it +3, whereas the other judges were less impressed. Two of them gave +1, and the other two gave -1. GOE was only +0.09.

There was relative agreement between the Judges for the Step Sequence and the Double Axel, the latter being given extra credit for being in the second half of the programme. But, for the Flying Sit Spin, Judge 4 only gave it +1, while the other Judges gave it +3 or, in the case of Judge 1, +4. It did get the highest GOE of the programme, with +0.90.

Because I didn't see the programme, I have no idea what went wrong with the final element, the Change Foot Combination Spin. But, he got three -3's and two -2's from the Judges, and -0.60 in GOE. Probably went wonkey or something.

It should be noted that his training-mate, Dillon Judge, finishes his SP for this season with the same element. And when he did it in the Junior GP on Friday, it was a complete disaster. So, perhaps Margaret needs to do some extra work with them on this particular element.

Sam is currently 3.43 points behind 2nd position, Brandon BAILEY (GBR), and 0.35 points ahead of 4th position, Elliott THOMPSON (GBR). They are part of a close group of 4 skaters, which is completed by Charles Henry KATANOVIC (HRV) in 5th position, who is 3.07 points behind Sam.

With a 16.26 point lead, Graham Newberry is uncatchable. But, the rest of the positions are up for grabs. So, everything is to play for in the Free Skate.

So, let's hope Sam has a good one!

The Men's FS is due to start at 09:40:00 BST (08:40:00 GMT). So 3 hours from now.

Sam will be the fourth skater to start.
