Ekaterina Alexeyevna Ryabova ( Russian: Екатерина Алексеевна Рябова) is a singles ladies skater who represents Azerbaijan. She was born on 27th March 2003 in Moscow, Russia. She is the 2018 Minsk Arena Ice Star Champion and the 2019 Minsk Arena Ice Star bronze medallist.

Recently Rina made her GP debut at the Rostelecom Cup :cheer:, where she finished fifth, at which point I realised she didn't have a fanfest and thought I better start one up. She has since represented Azerbaijan at the 2019 World Championships, the 2019 and 2020 World Junior Championships, and the 2019 and the 2020 European Championships (where she finished sixth, her best ISU championships finish so far).

As of December 2020 Ekaterina has left the Academy of Evgeni Plushenko and will be coached by her father, Alexei Ryabov again. Previously she was in Alexander Volkov's group at the Academy, before that Sergei Davydov at Sambo 70 and originally by her father, Alexei Ryabov at Moscow Dynamo.

Ekaterina started skating in 2006 when she was only 3! She trains and has competed in Russia, but never represented Russia internationally.

It looks like it. Her Instagram name has Rina in it :) I'm not sure though...I hope so because I have congratulated her on Instagram and called her that!

Thank you for this thread. I was already starting to think whether I should create it, but thanks to my laziness I didn't start till now.

Now it's time to congratulate Katya for her new personal best, she has risen it for 10 points.

Thank you for setting this up. Ekaterina always looks as though she is enjoying herself in her competitions and looked delighted with her outcome at her GP skates in Moscow this week. Rightly so!

Thanks for setting this up!! I've been noticing her name over the last year and I'm just so impressed that she came out of nowhere and is doing so well.

What call my attention .. it's her mental strength .. she waited for the second jump .. not rush them ... wait and them jump ... not fall ... like I know this even if the first isn't perfect or I had to do another ... no problem .... that's something that make you go far ...

It seems she does go by Katya, so my mistake. I'm used to calling her Rina, though!

Anywho I've updated the thread with some videos.

Is she the only international elite in Volkov's group at Plyushchenko's Angels?

PA being a commercial rink, does this mean Ryabova is ousted from any of the state or MosKomSport rinks in Moscow?

I think so? There used to be Rakhat Bralin from Kazhikstan but he seems to have gone elsewhere?

Don't know about the rink situation either! Although the PA has a full-sized rink now, so there's room to practice :)

Ryabova: I will never ruin my health for the sake of the Olympics

about girl’s 'female' skating, career goals and the hype around Zagitova

Figure skater from Azerbaijan Yekaterina Ryabova said that she did not set herself medal goals, since what she sees as most important is not sport, but her future. The athlete also noted that she could end her career after the current Olympic cycle. NEWS.ru publishes the second part of the conversation with the skater.

-- You, at a younger age, skated in the same group as Sotskova, Tsurskaya ...

- It seems that I did not meet with these girls in competitions. I competed in the same category with Alina Zagitova, Sasha Trusova and, possibly, Anya Shcherbakova. I do not exclude also with someone else, I just do not remember the names and surnames.

-- Then it was clear that Zagitova and Trusova are the top, is this the future of our figure skating?

- About Trusova it was immediately obvious that she is just a machine. Jumps and jumps constantly. Her nickname is very correctly chosen - Russian Rocket. She can do jumps of any complexity without any problems. Shcherbakova always looked very nice on the ice, it was nice to look at her. Alina Zagitova was a revelation to me. When I skated with her on the same ice, she often hid her jumps. Of course, it is nonsense she added so much in one year that she won the Olympics. Just tremendous work has been done.

-- It’s not a shame when women’s figure skating is often called girl’s? The age of the athletes is slowly dropping. If previously, 20-year-old athletes were commonplace in competitions, now they are already 'old' athletes in this sport.

- “Old ladies” is, of course, fun. We often joke on this subject in training. In the older group, we are teens of 16-17 years old, and also there are those who are only 10-11. We already consider ourselves old. In fact, it has always been that female figure skating was girlish. Always was. Look at the winners. They won the Olympics before they were 18-20 years old, spending their second or third season in senior level.

-- This is when the body and condition are able to endure large overloads and produce quadruples?

- I would not say that. Previous Olympic champions didn't have quadruples. Yes, the load is really big. Further, the body is already being rebuilt and can no longer endure the stress of competition. In training, everything is fine with you, but then you go to the start, and something does not work out. It seems to me that this all comes with growing up, under stress a person simply cannot get himself together.

-- You are already 16 - this means that Yekaterina Ryabova is somewhere on the way to her peak in her career, so that in a couple of years she’ll try to take medals, for example, at the Olympics.

- I never set the bar for medals, because it was not sport that always mattered to me, but my future afterwards. I will never intentionally ruin my health under the Olympics. No matter how rude it sounds now. I train as I need, they try not to overload me. When there are any health problems, then corrections in my schedule are necessarily made. Yes, at 16-18 years will be my professional peak, well, maybe it will last a little longer. Then I will continue my career either in shows or as a coach. In the summer, by the way, I “rolled up” little children in order to earn money, plus get some experience.

-- And what is your career goal? Figuratively speaking, take a medal at the World Championships, and only then you can safely hang skates on a nail. Not so long ago, I talked with Alexey Krasnozhon, he gave himself another three or four years in sports. He expects to become a World Championships medalist, and will then leave.

- In fact, I have a bar that I only spoke to my parents about: I skate this Olympic cycle. If I get to the Games, then after them and the World Championships I will leave professional sports. My health is more important, I will not abuse myself further. Medals? There is a lot of competition in our sport, and I'm a realist. I want to show good skating runs. If your programs succeed, you feel satisfaction over that you were able to do something. If you don’t get somewhere, it’s not so important.

-- You raised the issue of health. Now is there something that is already starting to bother you?

- I have very wobbly feet. I can just go and twist my legs. And this is not from figure skating, just such a feature of the body. Therefore, for seven years, something is happening to my right leg. Sometimes with my left. I wear orthoses periodically, but that doesn't stop me from doing figure skating. Just when it is very cold, my foot starts to hurt. But at the rink they don’t hurt me, if that. Sometimes I wake up in the winter, and outside the window is much lower than zero. My legs are aching, and at such moments I understand that I am an old woman (laughs). I have an orthosis with iron inserts, so I won’t tuck my leg in PE lessons, and on the ice I have a soft fixation of the leg. But it’s not very convenient here: any mistake when landing after a jump - I will get a stretch.

-- Do you share the hype that has now risen around Zagitova and Medvyedeva? Plus you can add Trusova to them. All talk is only about them, not really paying attention to others.

- I will not comment on this, really. I never want to hurt anyone. I believe that we should talk about everyone, since each skater works a lot, leaves a lot of his health at the rink. Even if something doesn’t work out for them at the competitions, you just need to support them, and not spread hate, as it is constantly happening on the Internet.

-- Have you encountered criticism on the Web?

- I never read forums or any news sites, but sometimes they write something to me on Instagram. In fact, I have not yet seen any negative reviews about myself. The only problem was the interview of some skater, but somehow they started to accuse me of something. It was fun. Confusion has happened. After all, very often very well-known athletes are pushed into some strange situation. No need to do this. Emotion overwhelms, and your hands itch to write something bad - better not to write, put the phone aside (smiles). This is just unpleasant.

-- A storm of emotions was caused by the routine of Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva, who at some demonstration was in the form of a stewardess. How do you feel about that? Is this image applicable to you, or are you not a supporter of revealing costumes?

- Here the opinions were divided. Someone believes that everything was very vulgar, someone - that everything is cool. I would never do that, since I am a more private person and, let’s say, with such an audience I would never undress to such a state (laughs). It can be beautiful from some point of view.

-- But you do not criticise Lisa, as I understand it. Yet many attacked her.

- No, why? She did something different, it turned out cool. She didn’t go beyond any limits, so it’s normal. She is cool, distinguished herself, showed herself extraordinary. And if you want to say or write something bad - I can only repeat the advice that you should put the phone aside.

-- Have you thought about somehow raising a hype around your person in order to add recognition to yourself? Maybe not through such a technique, but somehow otherwise.

- I see no reason to hurt someone’s feelings at all. I try to be the most correct so as not to offend anyone or anger anyone. We must treat everyone with kindness. Raise hype? Why do I need this? I work calmly, there is a future profession. Why do I need extra fame? It will appear if I show high results. I will not achieve something high - I will try myself in something else. I don’t see the point in hype, really.

-- I wanted to end the conversation with a little blitz, when the questions are short, but the answers still need to be given in a detailed version. Short or free program?

- Short, as this is something new for me.

-- Zagitova or Medvyedeva?

- In general, none of them, to be honest. Both are good in their own way, but I don't equal any of them.

-- Moscow or Baku?

- I was in Baku only one day. I think that in the future there will be an opportunity to visit the city again and see the capital of Azerbaijan. So I’ll choose Baku, because I think that there will be fewer people than in Moscow, I don’t like crowds.

-- A World Championship medal or a trip to the Olympics?

- What a difficult question. I think the medal of the World Championships.

-- Come on? For many, Games are a childhood dream.

- Many people want to go to the Olympics, dream of it, but I have never been among these people. Yes, it will be cool if I earn my way there, but I believe that a World Championships medal will give me more options than just a trip to the Games.

-- A party or a relaxing pastime at home?

- I will choose to read a book. Parties and any activity is a large crowd of people, and I like to spend time alone more.

This is a bit late, but thanks for the interview Edwin, it was really interesting! I forgot for a minute that Rina represents Azerbaijan and was like "Why is she so confident she'll make the Olympics and Worlds, does she have a quint she's not telling us about?!" Then I remembered

I hope she makes it to the Olympics (ice is slippery!).

At the moment though Rina is skating in Plushy's Cinderella show. She and Elena Radionova are the stepsisters (not sure if they're called the ugly stepsisters in this version, they sure don't look like it! ;))

The show is 10,000 types of amazing! Here's an excerpt.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6m3ULklOwq - Bossing poor Cinderella (Yulia Lipnitskaya!) around

There's also a couple of videos of Rina skating from an interesting point if view: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6I9e6YJ_dt and
https://www.instagram.com/p/B6dsokoJrX4

A couple of weeks back she went to see Don Quixote: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6OOR87pzDr Love the dress! She looks so elegant.

Oh and also a few weeks back the Academy invited some children with disabilities to a master class at the rink. Here's Rina with some of the kids https://www.instagram.com/p/B55d8J2FukC - Looks like a fun day!

Oops I've neglected this thread a bit!

The 2020 Youth Olympics is on right now and Ekaterina competed in the Ladies event for Azerbaijan.

She got to carry the flag in the Opening Ceremony!

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7JR3krpcEe - Second clip of this post :)

I didn't actually get to watch any of the competition because of time zones, but she posted this:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7TSGm6J3vs - She didn't do as well as she hoped to, which is a shame!

YouTube has videos of her programs up.

The SP: https://youtu.be/hkDhoFnjkdo The version of Roxanne may be more than we can stand ;) but I do enjoy her interpretation of it.

The FS: https://youtu.be/_51bGWBq67g The first jump was popped, but she came back strong!

She ended up in 8th, not too bad, although it did mean she was out of the running for the Mixed Country Team event.

So instead she got a day off to enjoy the sights: https://www.instagram.com/p/B7WQiMupu0j

Next stop for Rina is Euros - I was thinking Four Continents, but then looking at the Euros threads I saw Azerbaijan is there (they're also in Eurovision...but then so is Australia ;))

Good news for me is that the time difference allows me to watch the SP, so fingers crossed for Rina there! :cheer:

Rina at Euros update!

She ended up drawing the final group with the likes of the 3A, how nerve wracking!

She had a brilliant skate - those jumps! - and is currently in 6th place - which means she'll be skating in the final group again tomorrow (which means due to time zones I think I'll be able to watch her live!)

Here's her SP from today: https://youtu.be/raNxwjTgzgs Score: 62.22
(I couldn't find an English version sorry about that. )

I may need an intervention though...I'm starting to not mind that version of Roxanne :laugh2:

Best of luck to Rina in the FS!

Well, the version of the song Yekaterina skates to is less nerve grating than Samodurova's.

She'll be reasonable content. Good difficulty, good execution and well rewarded. Best of the 'other' Russians ....

Hmm, I could have sworn they were the same, Sofia's is a longer version though for the FS, so maybe it's croaky voice overload

Today was the FS! I got up early to watch the last group and Rina was first in the last group and had a fab skate!

https://youtu.be/PqDp8hAwa1o - If I'm honest I actually find the lyrics in this less palatable then Roxanne  I don't even know why. But yes, the jumps were excellent! Not as much presentation, but she's young. :)

She finished sixth! Last Euros she was 12th so quite the leap! Congratulations to Rina! :cheer:

Rina just competed in Junior Worlds!

I thought I saw an Insta story of her's showing the countdown to the start of the competition, but I thought I was seeing things.

She's going to Senior World's too, so fingers crossed she can do just as well there as last year. :)

But for Junior Worlds she just came 10th after placing 13th in the SP and 10th in the FS.

Bravo Rina! I sent her good luck wishes actually and she replied to thank me which I think is really nice of her :)

Here's her SP: https://youtu.be/rwc2suooFRY (This will probably stay up forever because that version of Roxanne is so disliked no-one would want to admit they own it by claiming copyright :laugh2: - well played Team Plush, well played ;) )

Her FS: https://youtu.be/FmEpyOQHfP8 (Ted likes her posture, high praise!)

I have my fingers crossed I'll be able to catch Senior World's live, but with time zones who knows?

In the meantime, keep on keeping on, Rina. :cheer:

Oh dear I've neglected this thread again!

As we know Senior Worlds 2020 didn't happen, unfortunately, so we'll never know how it would have gone.

Rina though, hasn't been sitting back, she's been up to a lot at the Academy - helping out fellow students and doing choreography both for her own programs and some others.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFrV1XHJe3G - The student Rina helped choreograph - Olga Bykova. Swipe left to read about and see Rina's weekly schedule, busy to be sure!

Since she represents Russia, Rina isn't actually eligible for medals in the Russian competitions but she is allowed to compete in them, which is good experience especially with this crazy season!

So far she's competed in two, I totally missed this first event, but I was excited to see she has a new costume!

https://www.instagram.com/p/CF7HndLpWuo - With Svetlana Biyan, I have no idea who she is and her Insta private so it remains a mystery.

Rina's second competition was just this week in St Petersburg - the Panin-Kolomenkin Memorial.

She got the 2nd highest score! Boss! And she has two new programs (farewell Roxanne :p) Unfortunately, they were streamed on VK the Russian Facebook and there's no sign of them on YouTube.

Her SP is to Mambo Italiano and her FS to Stop!

Here's an excerpt from each program though: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGVmD3RpqPf

And finally some photos of Rina enjoying a bit of sight seeing in St Petersburg https://www.instagram.com/p/CGXbFimpi9_

Coach Alexander Volkov must have rushed down to be there, that's dedication!

Anyway if Rostelecom goes ahead we'll see Rina there, in the meantime I'll have to keep an eye on those local competitions to see if she pops up again.

See you next time ☺️

Hello all!

Well, I've been neglecting this thread again, but now there's big news.

Rina has left the Academy and will now be coached by her father again.

I'm not sure if by "training conditions" it was due to interpersonal stuff, or because of the Academy moving to its new location.

I'm also confused because I thought Rina's father was already a coach at the Academy since he's gone to competions with Rina.

He does currently coach though, his team even has an Insta:

It also explains Rina's Insta post yesterday about new-old trainers

https://www.instagram.com/p/CItPf5GJ05d - As I said since I thought Team Ryabov was a part of the Angels (like Team Volkov) this went right over my head! 😅

All this reminded me I never posted Rina's programs at Rostelecom! Although I can't seem to find them on YouTube 😟

She didn't go as well as hoped, but she did thank all her fans for their support:

And wore this beautiful dress to the (ill-advised 😟) banquet:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CH57TdhJiuj - With her father.

Man, this season is a rollercoaster I tell you!

Happy New Year all!

Rina has been busy the past month, but she's doing well :)

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIMAFRSJsDz and https://www.instagram.com/p/CIeF-iAJFKJ - At a dance class, Rina asks us to rate her dancing from 1 to 10 ;)

Blast from the past:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI8k1PhJ70H - At the World Youth Games last season.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJTRd-UpMhm - At an outdoor rink a few days back, it looks amazing, wish they had this in Australia.

Not sure if Rina is planning to compete in any other competitions (outside of Worlds if it happens), she can't actually get a medal of she takes part in internal Russian competitions, but she has done so before on this season.

I'll keep my eye out :)
