Two ill-behaved fans graffitiing a wall is not anywhere near the level of football hooliganism, come on. It's not acceptable by any means but you're talking about the biggest fanbase in skating by a mile, and an isolated incident. A couple lunatics acting out do not make a trend. I think cyberbullying is a much bigger (and scarier) issue that has been going on for years now. There really are some deranged people out there, and they are not exclusive to any one group of fans.

I was likening the act of doing such a thing not the scale of the two. Plus I didnt say it was going to be a trend at least i hope not.

It's truly a shame, at least they were caught and escorted out.
I really really hope this is just an isolated incident. Figure skating doesn't need "fans" like that, nor like the ones who set up those messages during the VC...

Wow

This is despicable.

Why can't these people be more like the skaters themselves?

Nathan and Yuzu have nothing but respect for each other and are pushing each other to new heights in this sport.

These people are not true fans or they would have some $@€£ing respect for the skaters, especially their favourite, the venue they defaced with their filth and the other fans.

Not as bad, but there were some also holding up signs during the medal ceremony where I hope no skater saw them https://twitter.com/skatelove2006/status/1203345239332851713 :disapp:

And people talking about contacting Interpol. About figure skating results. I wish everyone would calm down. It's ridiculous.

These people should have been thrown out too. That is utterly out of order to do that during the medal ceremony

Twitter is also unpleasant reading. I have already encountered at least two direct threats and one indirect threat towards the judges and at least one comment directed at Nathan that he has killed the sport. I hope Nathan does not log onto social media for a while.

I think on regular twitter I've blocked 3 people, skating twitter I've had to block about 50. I don't know what is wrong with people.

When I saw the word “vandalizing”, I expected to see chairs torn out of the stadium, scoreboards torn down, and doors smashed in. Philadelphia Eagles fans would laugh at this being called vandalizing.

That doesn’t make it right, and it is a shame that two isolated fans let their emotions get the better of them. And I do not see the purpose in dragging Twitter fan wars into Goldenskate. The fact that someone in this tweet said that they knew who it was means nothing to me until I see an actual report.

In the meantime I invite you to visit the city of Philadelphia after a Super Bowl win if you want to know the meaning of the word vandalism.

This kind of rabid stuff seems to be getting worse.

I really fear that some nutcase will not just make threats online or deface a wall of signatures, but start physically attacking skaters and judges.

OMG that's horrifying!

I assume Plushy's and Shizuka's signatures are on that wall, two of Yuzu's idols. He would be disgusted at the people who did this. Heck he'd be disgusted either way, but that's just rubbing salt into the wound.

It's just a competition! Those fans are no fans.

Even if it was 'just' graifiti on the wall, it makes me sad. Because fans should know that skaters like Nathan and Yuzu would hate to see it. That's not supporting your favorite skater or the sport they represent. That's venting feelings of anger in an unproductive way. It's shameful.

It is hard to find the balance, or should I say impossible, between encouraging enthusiastic support from fans and then trying to corral that energy in only positive ways.
Organizers, ISU, etc appeal to this hard-core base of fans who will travel for days to see skaters, buy the tickets (at insane prices), wait in lines for hours at the break of dawn to see them. You have to be pretty passionate to do it. Maybe even a little crazy? ;) 99% will be the good kind of crazy and then there will be the stinkers who will be the bad kind. Is it possible to weed those out without turning off the support that the sport needs?

I'm so glad to watch the GPF, and seriously touched when Yuzu was almost in tears when he said he had felt lonely for many years of competition because there weren't challengers like Nathan, and this gives him motivation to continue trying harder for the sport. He really means it, it's respect for your competitors, and respect for self to have a challenge, and to step up to the challenge, this is a sport!

I wish fans aren't so narrow and lacking in the sporting spirit.

I'm seriously amazed by this GPF, just stunning skaters and skating, and the judging is fair and above reproach.

The downplaying in this thread - particularly with posts that glorify other sports fans going on riots - is quite troubling.

This is actually my concern as well. Judges are fans of skating. At events, if they are not on panel or don't have meetings, many will often go up into the stands to watch other disciplines. We know all the judges' names now and their faces get shown on the big screen. What if this happened and some deranged fan saw them and - god.

No, no, no! I've always loved FS because of the General support for skaters. wherever they're from. Also, when I may not agree with the judges...that's it. I don't agree. Sad, this. And let's all be clear: no skaters were involved in this. They were perfectly respectful towards their opponents. Nor was the crowd in generaL: they were supportive of all skaters, and actually helped the ones who were down. That's the spirit.

Same as el henry, I thought chairs were thrown or there were some bloodshed. Our football team(soccer in US) one time had to go the stadium in military tanks due to threats. Recently our minister of sports got dangerously stuck in the stadium due to unruly behaviour of the losing side. Football I attribute it to sports betting.

For badminton, there are audience who cursed the players (with curse words involving one's mother) in public at the stadium when the players lost.

For FS, with the rise of social media, there are some outlandish people. Since years ago, I've seen tweets of people accusing Yuzuru of faking the tsunami incident, faking injury to gain sympathy, more recently holding prayer circles that Yuzuru will injure his limbs. If not, why would a 2X OG champ have suicidal thoughts a mere 3 months after winning his 2nd OG gold.

Evgenia received tons of bashing when she decided to leave Eteri. Traitor was the frequent term used.
Kolyada received very scathing criticism in the Russian media everytime he didnt skate well even though at the time he was battling sinus problems.

In any case, hopefully these people will find more healthy way to vent their frustrations so it doesn't get from verbal to physical.

Well for a conservative sport like figure skating, its pretty bad. This the first time I've heard of figure skating fans defacing an arena. You cant undermine the severity just because it doesnt measure up to fans in much rowdy sports. In some sports, booing the rival team at kick off is perfectly normal but if a figure skating arena booed a skater at the start of his program it would be extremely rude in a sport like figure skating.

Bottom line - vandalism is criminal, the people that should be charged and ISU should issue a ban from attending events for a certain amount of time. I don't care if fans of other sports are worse, its ridiculous the amount of criminal behavior that gets written off as someone being 'passionate for their favorite' and the ISU as well as other governing bodies of sport should come out strong against this type of behavior at their events.

This is not surprising after reading quite some fans were talking about how to get Nathan killed after the worlds. The anger even spread to Raf after his Russian interview was deliberately twisted.

Eric, Ashley, Liza, Nathan all being harassed terribly on social media to a degree you are wondering what is wrong with those fans.

It is definitely not 2, and unfortunately it is going to be trend if ISU allows the protest banner during the award ceremony, and nothing being done when skaters are harassed the way it is happening now.

BTW, the original tweet had been deleted, but it seemed that some fans reported the crime of unfair score to Interpol

It works multiple ways. I'm not surprised cos there are groups who hold virtual prayer circles or wish for Yuzuru to be injured.
Not counting people harrassing his family & grandparents, ever since 2014 win.

Evgenia gets called worse than that in Russian if I recall correctly. Kolyada being called a disgrace to Russia, yada yada.

It is just it happens to US skater that you all start to be aware & take notice.
