It works multiple ways. I'm not surprised cos there are groups who hold virtual prayer circles or wish for Yuzuru to be injured.
Not counting people harrassing his family & grandparents, ever since 2014 win.

Evgenia gets called worse than that in Russian if I recall correctly. Kolyada being called a disgrace to Russia, yada yada.

It is just it happens to US skater that you all start to be aware & take notice.

Absolutely not true.
This has been a problem for years.

But some of it is now happening outside in the physical world and not just behind keyboards online...it is worrying.

This behaviour is unacceptable no matter who is the victim of it!

As a matter of fact, Zhenya’s case had been discussed when it happened, and I believed there was a thread in FSU about the terrible message she got from a Japanese fan when she had ice shows in ajapan this year. Misha was a different case, and people talking about it, I am not sure in this forum.

I became a FS fan after watching Nathan, so I don’t know about the prayer circle thing. It was very disturbing.

The harassment I talked about in my previous post happened to Eric, whom some Hanyu fans started a petition to get him removed from some post. He is a Canadian. Liza is Russian. Only Nathan and Ashley are Americans. So it is not I only took notice when it happened to Americans.

BTW, Nathan’s family is not immune from some fans’ attack either.

I seem less sympathetic cos we, as fans, have been dealing with it for years. And if I entertain twitter or youtube, I'll get attacked by those who profess to be Nathan's fans -> on a daily basis.
We'll get called pathetic, delusional & a host of other stuff. Not to mention the insults they throw at Yuzuru. Cannot have rational discussion abt the competition.

Scroll down to the comments section, see the how the uploader is insulted by a Nathan fan :

I dont follow Yuzuru only but other skaters too.

So, as far as I'm concerned, it's figure skating fans. If the 2X OG champ also gets bashed, what more others.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Neither Yuzu or Nathan deserve any of this.

Saying "well look the other skater's fans are just as bad!" is not the point.

This behaviour is awful and unacceptable no matter who is doing it or who the nastiness is directed towards.

Despicable behavior on the part of those "fans!" They need to be dealt with as severely as possible (ban them from attending fs events, etc.). This behavior is inexcusable!

Yuzu & Nathan would NEVER condone this behavior!

I can't help but think of poor Mariah Bell receiving death threats after accidentally cutting Eunsoo Lim last year at worlds. Some people really take the crazy to a whole new level.

I've also seen tweets ridicule Eun Soo. Along the lines of she should have eyes to see and keep out of Mariah's way since it's Mariah's turn for run thru.
But perhaps less cos Eun Soo is a minor. There was of course criticism of Eun Soo's agency, which has been known for dramatics.

My original reply to bonita was to show it's been going on for years, cos he/she wrote like so shocked like it's the 1st time ever it has happened. I mean the threats, not the vandalism.

Yeah, that's you. Others dont think that way. If we were to complain, we're dismissed as 'Hanyu fans are a bunch of whinning brats'.
Thats how toxic the internet has become.

Call INterpol.. ? :scratch3: Do they have the faintest idea just what Interpol might be all about??? - they are just proudly exhibiting their astounding ignorance for the whole world to laugh at.

Apparently the culprits who vandalized the wall had been caught and escorted out..? They should have instead given them the cleaning material and made them clean up the mess themselves and videotaped the action for all the idiotic "fans" to see.

Well then those people who dismiss the complaints are just as bad and need to shut up too.

I don't think anyone here thinks this is the first time that this has happened or that it's only shocking if it's directed at an American.
I am shocked that this behaviour not only continues to get worse but is now becoming much more than making anonymous threats online.

I don't think it is so easy...from the photo you can see that the graffiti is over the previous signatures, so cleaning done by non-expert would end up cancelling those signatures. However, if it's true that the culprit/s has/have been caught, I hope that they are fined (the fine in our country is up to 3000 euros for graffiti done on properties of artistic or symbolical significance), so that the restoration expenses can be covered with the fines.

From what I can see as a general fan, it seems Chen get a greater amount of toxicity when he wins over Hanyu than the other way round. You dont need to scroll down once in the comment section on the isu post to see a continual list of negativity. Whereas the comments are generally positive when Hanyu wins gushing GOAT, OMG etc etc. I'm sure if you scroll down longer for minutes on the look out for bad comments to argue against you might find a couple.

Let's not categorize/stereotype fans just because of the actions of two people. No need to turn this into a flame thread. The individuals were caught and we can only hope that actions will be taken to prevent, preserve, and protect in the future.

Exactly.

Rabid nasty people exist all over the world and definitely not just in figure skating.

I only hope it does not escalate to even worse levels at events, I fear for the safety of our skaters, judges and tech panels enough as it is.

[...] but have never, ever considered myself a "fan". To me, "fan" is a shortened form of the word "fanatic" and that has no positive connotations whatsoever. That others consider it to be a source of pride, frankly, baffles me.

Maybe because 'others' consider it rather derived from the word 'fancier'. I'm a non-native speaker, but I'd be very surprised if I was mistaken on this one.
I'd call myself a proud fan without the slightest hesitation. I fancy, or like, many skaters. And I'm proud I can cheer for them and support them.

Are we going to be digging up all the stories of the worst things fans have done? This could take forever. It's a race to the bottom.
Since we are here in the insular setting of this forum we can make nice categorizations like "Hanyu fans are crazy" "Yuna fans are crazy" "XX fans are the worst" and maybe feel a little smug and superior that we are not 'that fan'.
It's not like that in the broader context. Sports fans, heck fans in general have this tendency. It needs to be acknowledged that this is something that tends to happen in fandoms. -And then make solid steps to discourage it from happening again.
I'm not convinced that remotely commenting and sharing horror stories about whose fans did what is the answer.

Bullying, in person or in cyberspace, vandalizing a venue, these are real problems that need real solutions. I doubt it can be completely stopped and that incidents can be brought to zero, but steps can be taken by individuals, and by the organizers so that it happens less.

Thank you for being the voice of reason as usual

These fans have committed a crime, and I'm hoping a hefty fine and a couple of cases where a fan is chucked out of the venue for hateful messages during ceremonies or whatever, could take care of the problem for the future.

I prefer not to think of the term as "fancying" because here in the UK this also means having a crush on someone

So to say "I really fancy Alyona Kostornaia" would be creepy as hell to me.

Ho hum. None of this is unique to figure skating, to Yuzu and/or Nathan, to this competition, to anything. Just people behaving badly. There are bad people everywhere. Some of them like figure skating. The Bible explains this as mankind being in a fallen state, and I'm sure every other religion and philosophy has its own explanation as well. I wish this guilt by association nonsense would stop.

(Edit: by "ho hum," I don't mean that this isn't a complete outrage, just that it's not a remotely unusual complete outrage.

And yeah. I have family in Philly and heard the stories from the Eagles' Super Bowl win, to say nothing of their losses!)

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to a freestyle session. One of the moves I can't wait to try out? It's from Nathan's SP.

Etymology post alert!!! The word "fan" is commonly accepted by language scientist to be an abbreviation of "fanatic". English "fanatic" comes from the Latin adjective "fanaticus", which derives from Latin "fanum", one of the many words that were used to describe Roman temples. "Fanaticus" initially was used with the meaning "related to the temple" (i.e. pecunia fanatica = the money of the temple, common in Latin inscriptions) but later it became to be used to describe the attitude and passionate feelings of the believers towards the cult/cults.
That said, I agree that there is nothing wrong in being a fan of a skater or many skaters or the sport in general!

My post still stands, as it is my personal experience being on the receiving end. If I am to make a comment, esp on twitter, the response will be almost immediate, each & every time, that's what I mean by 'entertain'.

Its becoming like political topic thread, with cybertroopers. I'm just surprised some posters are shocked.
'Hanyu fans are crazy" ? I can get attacked everyday but I dont say or even think 'Nathan fans are crazy'. Just 'oh well, it's getting as bad as the political threads'
