Hi everyone
This is a forum based on skating so obviously we tend to talk mostly about skating here on GSkate. But there are so many other sports out there that I am also a great fan of.
Figure skating is obviously my favourite, with horse riding (show jumping in particular), rhythmic gymnastics and surfing my next few favourites.
What are your favourite sports?

VOLLEYBALL. I used to follow a few of the Russian teams/players and hope to again once things settle down at work, but I don't have time for that and figure skating (and am still not over Tatiana Kosheleva leaving Dinamo Moscow/Krasnodar and Wilfredo Leon leaving Zenit Kazan, lol). I also play it surprisingly well given my awful depth perception.

Figure skating and volleyball are the only ones I seek out to watch, but I'll watch any winter sport that happens to be on. I like them all.

I also love to skimboard, but I'm nowhere near as good at that as I am at figure skating. I can pretty much just go back and forth, but well enough to get quite a few compliments.

And we even have a (mostly) NFL thread, started by moi;) I used to think my two sports fandoms were an unusual combo, there are a lot of us.:hap10:

My number one sport is Dog Mushing (Iditarod, Yukon Quest... I prefer the Mid and Long Distance races, but also enjoy watching sprint and dryland racing, but I have more knowledge on the mid to long)
Also enjoy football (all types, but NFL is my favorite)

Swimming. It was the sport I was best at in school, and I still follow world level swimming fairly closely.

Also baseball, but I admit I just don't have the time to invest in following as closely as I once did.

I gave up watching football one season, and found I didn't miss it, so I haven't returned to viewership.

I used to watch rhythmic gymnastics almost as much as figure skating, but then I realized that I had to give one of them up to keep my heart from shattering every single day. I decided to keep figure skating after Sasha Soldatova shattered my heart by having a meltdown at last year's Russian Nationals. I still check up on my other (non-Russian) faves occasionally, they are still underscored (sigh)

I also watch a bit of fencing, mostly sabre, because the talented and cute : Oh Sanguk happens to be the reigning World Champion, and also our male sabre fencers are the reigning and five-times World Champions. And also sabre is the most exciting to watch.

I'm not a sporty person. I try not to think of figure skating as "sport" or I might decide it's really not for me (although, frankly, it's a bit late for that!) Winter sports, however, are my thing. If it involves sliding around on snow and/or ice, then I'm pretty much guaranteed to like it. And I like horses, too. Dressage is my thing there.

This might surprise a few people, but...rugby. Especially Australian/New Zealand/South African rugby. And not just because the men are hot. It's actually a very exciting game to watch. I don't play. Mama didn't raise a fool! :hap57:

Do you mean rugby union (aka the dying version), or rugby league (aka the good version)?

I'm a huge rugby league fan. You think I get snarly on here? Hoo boy, you ain't seen nothing compared to my rugby league team. My boys carry me through winter on the wildest ride. And last year really was the wildest ride.

I also watch F1 and most types of motor sport. Craig Lowndes was my first sporting love, but it was Mark Webber who I spent late winter night, year after year, watching and hoping and pleading with motorsport gods that please, just let him win one race! Maybe the next race will be the one! My patience was rewarded, eventually, but to say it was a long wait was an understatement.

See, this is interesting. I wouldn't have guessed you'd be a racing fan.

I mentioned swimming in my earlier post, but I have a burgeoning interest in UFC that I'll have to manage.

There is something about the raw brutality that both repels me and appeals to my imperial instincts.

I wish they fought in Roman garb. Bread and circus!

NHL hockey — go Caps! Thank you, el henry, for the NFL/NHL thread! I’d start being more invested in the NFL if the Cleveland Browns ever got their act/coaching together :palmf: Also, distance/mid-distance running (but mostly during the Olympics; otherwise, my son, a former college runner, keeps me up-to-date.)

I'm always rooting for ALLCAPS after the Flyers fail to make the playoffs. I was quite the Flyers fan back in the day, and I do mean back, but fell away from my other ice sport. And didn't come back, unlike figure skating.;)

My first love is motorbike racing. Always has been, and always will be.

I should point out that it is the tarmac racing that I love. Both short circuit racing and real road racing. I never got into the off-road stuff.

In terms of car racing, I only really follow Formula 1.

By the way, karne, I have finally come around to your thinking about Vettel. I thought the way he was with Webber was just a one-off situation. But, it has really become a pattern. Once his team-mate starts to become a threat to him as number 1 driver, Vettel starts getting really aggressive and doing stupid things. And it culminates with either him or the other driver leaving the team at the end of the following season. And given that Leclerc has signed a long extension with Ferrari, I think we all know that it'll be Vettel moving on at the end of this season.

Although I don't follow normal rallying, I do like Rally Raid (I got into it from the bikes, but love all the categories). But, I do think the Dakar Rally has become too big and commercialised. I would love to see it go back to basics, and re-discover it's true spirit. It was such a tragedy that we lost Paulo Gonçalves last week. Until he had to change his engine in Stage 3, I really did think that he had a chance to win the bikes category at the Dakar this year. But, alas, things took a tragic turn a few days later. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

And huge respect to Toby Price, who sacrificed his own chances of winning the Dakar to stay with Paulo. What an act of selflessness and humanity. I hope that when when it comes round to awards season in Australia that he gets some sort of recognition for his actions.

After motorsports, my next love is winter sports. Figure Skating is my favourite, obviously, but I also like most ski sports (but not these new-fangled freestyle ski sports). I have been a fan of Ski Jumping for a very long time (about 20 years). I am just in awe of what these guys and girls do. I would never have the courage to do that.

I only really started getting into the other ski sports around the time of the Vancouver Olympics. Nordic Combined was probably the first, as it was another opportunity to watch ski jumping. To be honest, I didn't really like the Cross-Country aspect of it. Hey, even now, I only ever watch the jumping phase of the Nordies.

That said, I do watch the specialise Cross Country races. But, I don't like the Classic style races. I much prefer the Free style races. However, to keep up with what is going on in the quests for the various Crystal Globes, you do really need to watch all the races.

I love Biathlon. I just love the contrast in the two different skill sets needed to do both the cross-country and the shooting. And I suppose the fact that you never see any Classic style skiing being used (it is all Free style skiing that is used in Biathlon) adds to the appeal.

Of the forms of ski sports that do not include ski jumping, my favourite is probably the Alpine Skiing. I like pretty much all the disciplines, but Slalom would definitely be my least favourite. I just prefer the more flowing nature of the others (probably due to being a motorsports fan).

I should add at this point that, when it comes to ski sports that do not include ski jumping, it is only the Women's World Cups that I follow. I know this sounds bad, but there are so many competitions across all the sports that it would be nigh-on impossible to watch everything. So, this was as easy a way to choose what to follow as anything.

When it comes to summer sports, there are only really 2 that I would follow. Although, I am starting to lose interest in one of them.

I love Netball. I admit, although it was one of the main sports that was played at my school, I wasn't interested in it back then. It was when the Commonwealth Games were in Glasgow in 2014 that I started watching. And that was only because 2 girls I had gone to school with were in the Northern Ireland team. But, as soon as I saw it, I was hooked. Although I only intended watching the NI matches, I ended up watching all the matches!

The other sport is Women's Football. I have never been much interested in football. But what attracted me to the Women's version (apart from the obvious) was that it didn't have all the bad things that you get in the modern Men's game. There was no diving; there was no dirty play; there was a sense of camaraderie. In short, the Women's game was like what the Men's game used to be like in the good old days, before it became over-commercialised. However, as Women's football has become more popular over the past few years, these bad things are starting to creep in. And as a result, I am starting to go off it.

Finally, in cue sports, I like Snooker. However, I stopped watching it a couple of seasons ago. Partly because the recorder I used to watch snooker speeded up broke. But also because the calendar had got so jam packed that there were practically no breaks. It was a case of one tournament finishing one day, and the next tournament starting the following day. In a 8 week period, you might get only 2 days without any play. It was just too much. So, I stopped watching completely.

Wow. I wasn't expecting to write quite that much!

I shan't do the "I told you so" dance.

But I am quite looking forward to the Le Clerc/Ricciardo combination at Ferrari.

Though Dan will have to get in before Ferrari get swept up in the romance of having Mick Schumacher debut in one of their cars...

Oh, Charles and Dani would be a dream team! The hottest young driver to come into the class for years, and the more experienced driver who never really got the chances his talent deserved (right team, but his team-mates were demanding all the attention). Oh, and who has the bonus of having an Italian background. ;)

I understand that after using Renault engines with Red Bull for so long that Dani wanted to stay with the engine he knew. And that he was wary of the Honda engine because it had been so unreliable with McLaren. But, he should never have moved to the Enstone team. When Renault signed Ocon for this coming season, I would have preferred if Huelkenburg had been the one to stay, so that Dani would be able to get a better drive sooner. Let's face it, he is good enough that the top teams would have made space for him.

As for Mick Schumacher, he could have competition from another relative of a Ferrari star driver - Charles Leclerc's brother Arthur, who has just signed for Ferari's young driver programme.

To be honest, I don't think Mick will be ready for F1 for a few years yet. What I think will happen is that when Raikkonen retires, Ferrari will place Schumi Jr. in Sauber to see how he gets on. And if he doesn't do as well as they expect, then they will place the younger Leclerc there the following season either in his place or as his teammate. And in the meantime, Dani will hopefully be doing well enough in the factory team to keep the seat.

Plans can change if the driver that is in to keep a seat warm until the preferred driver is available impresses. And we saw it happen at Ferrari in the mid-2000's. Ferrari signed Raikkonen to keep the seat warm until their preferrred option, Valentino Rossi, moved over from the bikes. But then Raikkonen went and won the championship. After that, the plan went out the window, with Raikkonen staying at Ferrari for a long stint, and Rossi staying with the bikes.

I've nothing against young Schumi or young Leclerc, but I would love to see Dani do the same!

Figure skating is my favorite of course but when I was a high school studend with more free time than now I used to follow also swimming, tennis and football.
I gave up on football a few years ago for many reasons but I still enjoy watching swimming during big events like Worlds and Olympics. Moreover, since Italy has been dominant in fencing for many years I also follow a bit of this sport, but only during Olympics
