I'm a bit of a casual watcher of WestWorld and when I heard their orchestral rendition of Wicked Games (by the Weeknd), I instantly thought of Hubbell/Donohue skating to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zFvGxiYwoc

That is very striking music. Tension at the beginning with the staccato immediately grabs the attention. It gradually builds throughout.

Very well suited for their very powerful stroking. This would be an interesting and original choice. A potential signature program... I was actually visualizing the placements of elements as I was listening.

Whether it be a competitive program or gala (I think both could work) Dancing After Death by Matt Maeson could be amazing with the right person,
I don't think anyone has skated to it and it would be pretty original and definitely emotional.

There's a lot of Muse's discography that remains unused even as Exogenesis 3 is becoming a warhorse. Okay, "Survival" may be a little on the nose, but since when has that stopped skaters? Seriously, I'd love to see someone do something with Hysteria, Apocalypse Please, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist etc and that's just one album!

A wonderful thing has happened since I took a break from the skating world: I've been exposed to SO MUCH new music, through things like orchestra and private violin study as well as just listening to music. (I have the *hardest* time picking program music for my fictional skaters because I have too many ideas...) So. Here goes.

Classical
Rachmaninov - Symphony no. 2 - the underrated Rach 2! This is what one of the protagonists of the Skating Book's free skate is set to. The challenge with this one is figuring out what to include since it's over an hour long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvuitFzDxDg

Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D Major - this is my current violin solo and I am in LOVE with it. I'm kind of shocked that no one uses it, given how well known it is among classical musicians. Playing this is like the classical violin equivalent of skating to Carmen, but there is a reason for that. 7:03...'nuff said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTE08SS8fNk

Kriesler - Liebeslied - another violin piece whose lack of use in skating mystifies me. There's also a piano transcription by Rachmaninov that's lovely and would make a great program. I chose this as the SP music for another of the protagonists in the Skating Book that I never shut up about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnW_Nhpt7no

Tchaikovsky - Waltz from Eugene Onegin - it's a little one-note, so I'm not surprised the it isn't super popular, but it's so lovely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQfexGGWkR8

Shostakovich - Symphony no. 5 - my orchestra played this my sophomore year of high school and it was TRANSCENDENT. I've been picturing a program to it in my head ever since. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeJPmIbiqp4

Kriesler - La Gitana - surprise, surprise, ANOTHER obscure violin piece that I'm using as program music for a skater in the Book. (He's an artistic, late-blooming 16-year-old junior described as resembling a baby Shoma.) It's so DRAMATIC. I NEED THIS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdB0o9NYmiI

Musicals
An In the Heights program would make me SOB, especially if it was Breathe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSQFjtszBYg

"She Used to be Mine" gets all the credit in skating, but "When He Sees Me" from Waitress would make an absolutely adorable pairs/dance ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeQZY9_451w

I know it's going to get written off as cheesy but Newsies actually does have some great songs! "Watch What Happens" would be perfect for a junior lady with a lot of spunk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SLFbCVwJhs
From the same show, "Something to Believe In" could work for dance? Maybe?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FhVL0Jylm4
Honorable mentions to Santa Fe, Carrying the Banner, and Seize the Day, all of which would be absolutely delightful for a junior singles FS.

If/Then has some good music, including "You Don't Need to Love Me": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xex4PR1CMRQ

It will never happen, but a "Six" program would MAKE MY ENTIRE FREAKING LIFE. If someone did a "Don't Lose Ur Head" ex, I would absolutely die of joy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAthQG1aKho

"Who I Was" from Bandstand would make a lovely SP for a mature senior lady: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzc7Y0qWnfw

Anything from "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" would be amazing if you could find a skater quirky enough and/or good enough at character pieces to carry it off. Also, why no "A Chorus Line" programs? It's a Broadway classic and I feel like it's a pretty obvious choice - "What I Did For Love" and "One" would both be perfect for skating.

Everything Else
It's a little *quirky*, but I would love to see a Bruno Major free dance. He's a lesser-known indie songwriter, and he's got a couple selections that I think would work:
The Most Beautiful Thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nml-_YE2OU
Just the Same: I'm picturing a Hubbell/Donohue FD to this now, and I neeeeeed it. It's a slow song but their chemistry and connection would be AGHHHH. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL5_44L0yV4
Home :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAqhFagMV_0

NIKI is an artist I was introduced to through several friends who are fans of her work and though most of her stuff is a little too EDM for skating, this one - my favorite of hers - be absolutely gorgeous as part of a free dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHW73lWcnf4 (it would need to be cleaned up though, it does drop an f-bomb at one point.)

It's sugary-sweet, but "Never Seen Anything (Quite Like You)" by the script is a waltz, so it's possible that it might be usable as a SD (I'm not up on my patterns anymore, are there any this would work for?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDxdkSkkM0Q

I have no idea who but I'm confident there's someone out there who could absolutely own this piece. Why am I lowkey getting Nathan Chen/Vincent Zhou vibes...? It's extremely singer-songwriter-y but suitably dramatic to provide enough contrasts for a SP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXJysswyIFo

Kehlani's "The Letter" would be a great vehicle for an emotive skater of any discipline. If a skater were able to interpret this well it could be immensely moving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAm7P7g1iOM

"River of Tears" by Alessia Cara is another gorgeous piece of depressing music that could be lovely: Another gorgeous piece of depressing music, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2AVF22jT60

Same with "Break My Heart Again" by FINNEAS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjmBLCbTgDo

Okay, I know I need to quit it with the cheesy love songs, but Dan + Shay are my guilty pleasure and a "Speechless" pairs/dance program would Make Me Die: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkXIpQkFCWA

The part of me that went to a 99.999% Spanish-speaking high school also wants to suggest a Julieta Venegas program. "Lento" would be great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWp7t9daI1k

Ah, another singer-songwriter pick that could be good for an artsy man-skater (I've never shown this one to anyone who didn't like it and I think skating fans would agree!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QRMPsVEdII

Finally, this one has the right intensity for skating, methinks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkhz7KbuWIA

*wipes brow* I probably missed a few, but at risk of annoying y'all, those are some programs I'd love to see performed!

Yes!! I love this waltz, one of my favourite's actually. I'd also suggest the one in Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, but really the whole symphony is gorgeous, and dramatic and would be well suited to figure skating programs.

Also I can't believe I have not seen someone skate to... Waldteufel's Skater Waltz yet. I mean come on! Why is that one not a warhorse already?

Also a lesser known classical piece of music that I think could be interesting to take is Lalo's Namouna Suite, especially the Cigarette.

And finally the third movement of Beethoven's string quartet n°16. The music is just... divine. I have no other words. Granted it's a bit slow paced? In any case difficult to pull off, I could see someone like Satoko chosing it as an exhibition piece... But it's possible to choreograph something to it. Check this dance variation

Also more M83 and Arvo Pärt in general

Ooh, yes! My orchestra played that when I was a freshman and the second movement (waltz) was always my favorite. Symphonie Fantastique would be a great choice for a skater who could carry off the contrasts well.

That piece is gorgeous, and yes, very skateable*. I've wanted someone to use if for years! And I'd love to see someone use music from the ballet La Fille Mal Gardee, too - the ribbon duet, the maypole dance and the storm would all be good choices.

*I remember it best, funnily enough, as the music for Tara's Company audition piece - the Persephone program - in Dance Academy.

I'd like to see someone (preferably from Ladies' singles) skate to a lesser known Abel Korzeniowki's piece. He has created soundtracks for R&J, W/E, Nocturnal Animals that are used pretty often, but there are many undiscovered ones.
Clouds
Flying With Whales
Song Of Time
The Dream Maker
Stillness Of The Mind
Also, the Penny Dreadful soundtrack is very captivating.

Someone has used The Dream Maker. :)

Agreed about using the Penny Dreadful soundtrack. It's so atmospheric. And I've mentioned it before, I know, but I'll add Black Sails to the mix too.

Music we would like to see in future programms

Hello there!

I dont know if there has been such a thread here ( i remember only for warhorses ) , but, i always wait with enthusiasm for new programms from athletes, especially for the music they use. And i see that there is a lot of repetition and lot of choreographers and skaters prefer to ''stay safe'' with music choices that have already been used before. So i make a thread for us to share music that we would like to see in a programm ( we could also write for which skater we think this kind of music skating ) and, cauz some of us are kind of new (2014+ era for me ) , feel free to ''correct'' whoever post a music choice that has actually been used before!

I start with these three

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqrusoQ6xVM
La Campanella from Liszt! I would really like to see it as a FP for Kamila Valieva but in a more mature age, aka 16-17 years old. The music is exquisite for an athlete with the ability to do quick step sequences , deep edges and great chance for the jumps to be synchronised with the music ( as it has so many ups and downs ). And with the extensions of Kamila Valieva it would be an eye pleasure. Especially in the end, it would be so great part for step sequences. It becomes quick and the music is escalating so well ( someone could think of the last spin as the music ends! ).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkZkekS8NQU
Ameno, from Era. We dont often hear such music , i dont understand why to be honest :scratch2::biggrin: I could see Kaori Sakamoto or Bradie Tennel skate something like this ! They can portrait this dark vibe that is produced by the 'chant'' like voices.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTrk4X9ACtw
Enya, Orinocco Flow! For Mai Mihara that is back on ice again  This airy, soft music really suits here. It has also a great power ( both the singer and the music itself ) and i think that it would portray better her more mature self , she is a grown up woman after all :)

I wait for your music choices with much enthusiasm !

But i dont know how to delete this thread , if someone know, let me know! :)

To have a thread removed from the edge you just need to click the little triangle in the lower left of your first post and report it to the Mods.

I see no reason to report it though. These threads can be really fun even if there is one every year. Anyone who doesn’t want to read it can put it on ignore or simply restrain from posting in it.

I say it every time we have a music thread but I’d love to see a Pan’s Labyrinth themed program. The music is as haunting as the movie :)

Regular members cannot actually delete threads themselves. Only Mods can remove threads from public view.

But, since you gave some good suggestions in your opening post, I don't think that would be the right thing to do here. I think a better course of action would be to merge this thread into the first thread that Ic3Rabbit linked to in her post - the "Brand New Ideas for Programs" thread started by Bluediamonds09.

It would be quick and easy to do, since that thread is still open!

EDIT: Done.
