Glad to hear it was planned. Any condition that starts with 'osteo-' must be painful, I hope this surgery gives her lots of long lasting relief!

I wonder if this was sports-related. Skaters tend to sustain uncommon injuries.

I believe that this condition does not have just one unique cause. But "trauma" and "overuse in childhood and adolescence" seems to play a role. There have been a few studies involving female gymnasts about the disease.

Osteochondritis dissecans is no joke. Joshua Farris had to have surgery for it when he was young, IIRC.

I hope Adelina gets well soon and heals speedily!

Her PR mentioned "Adelina's undergo a very serious surgery and she's expected to do a long recovery. She is in stable and not life treating conditions".

Adelina sustained this injury probably in childhood when she did gymnastics.

Her doctor answers some questions, on her degenerative condition:

Russian figure skater, Olympic champion Adelina Sotnikova was operated on at the L.A. Vorokhobov Clinical Hospital in Moscow. The media called the diagnosis of the athlete - degenerative stenosis of the cervical spine. According to the coach of 23-year-old skater Yelena Buyanova, Sotnikova underwent a planned operation.

The director of the rehabilitation center of the First Sechenov Moscow State Medical University, orthopaedic trauma specialist Konstantin Ternov, whom Sotnikova had contacted, told Evening Moscow how serious the figure skater’s diagnosis was.

“ Adelina Sotnikova was my patient. Degenerative stenosis of the cervical spine occurs if an injury has been received, resulting in instability. It can also form in people with congenital structural features of bone tissue and intervertebral discs. All this leads to the fact that growths begin to form in the lumen of the channel where the spinal cord is located. Due to the described mechanisms, the spinal cord is compressed, which can lead to the loss of arms and legs, ” the doctor explained.

As the specialist specified, before the start of her figure skating career, Sotnikova was engaged in gymnastics. He explained that a minor injury sustained in her youth during intensive training and enormous exertion could prove to be threatening by the age of 23.

“ Adeline is very flexible. ” For gymnastics get selected those athletes who have weak connective tissue. Sotnikova initially could bend without any training, it was easier for her to do than ordinary people. Injury brought instability and spinal cord problems. Pain in this case usually does not appear in the neck, but in the limbs, ” added Ternov.

The traumatologist explained that if the spinal cord is squeezed, the patient can only be helped by surgery - "an operation is performed in 100 percent of cases." Ternov concluded that rehabilitation after such an operation lasts about four weeks.

One can expect these kind of conditions in many figure skaters, Tursynbayeva, Kanysheva? One can strengthen the muscles in the lower back, but not damaged vertrebral discs in the loin, but the degeneration of tissue and growths continues until the pain becomes too much. Hendrikx, Lindfors and all those other skaters who are injured often and for lengths of time?

Will Adelina be able to jump on skates again? Do Bielmann's?? Has there been reconstructive surgery performed? Otherwise, I think better not risk your spine again.

Also, core strength training, proper warmups and cooling downs are most important for a long and healthy career.
