it's that time of year again and since we're all quarantined and bored out of our minds, what better time to talk about the best costumes of the season and the stars behind the scenes who designed them. feel free to include juniors in your list of top 10 in whatever disciplines you follow. i'm going to pick a winning designer too, as they are an essential part of packaging the skater perfectly for the season.

i will list mine for ladies along with a link to pictures for each, since that is the main discipline i follow.

1. Anna Shcherbakova, SP dress by Olga Ryabenko- this dress is my number one for the extreme amount of detail, textures, colors, 3D effects, etc. it's a real masterpiece. the flowers on the back, the use of fabric to create a smoky effect, and the blues, grays, and reds match the mood of the music and her interpretation perfectly. honestly, this is one of my favorite dresses of all time.

i'm including pictures of the back and front of this dress since this is my winner

2. Anna Shcherbakova, LP dress by Milena Bobkova- i think this will be high on everyone's list for obvious reasons! the transformer dress, and ladies dress of the year for many. this absolutely gave the effect they were going for, where Anna transforms to the mystical and fierce firebird halfway through her program. i think this dress also helps her change into that character! the colors of both dresses go together well and the designer did a fabulous job making the transformation easy for Anna to do, and not awkward looking for audiences.

3. Alena Kostornaia, SP dress by Olga Ryabenko- if there was ever a dress to depict an angel fallen from heaven, this is it. the back of this dress is just exquisite with the angel wings. this quote taken from a Russian journalist on his take of best dresses describes it perfectly- "if last season it was a small and fragile angel who recently fell on a figure-skating horizon, this season we already had a confident, beautiful and ambitious angel performed by Alena, who climbed onto the very top of the figured Olympus."

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/alena-kostornaia-in-action-during-the-senior-ladies-short-news-photo/1186976673?adppopup=true

4. Alina Zagitova, LP dress by Olga Ryabenko- i am in love with the amount of detail in this dress, Olga captured the very essence of the music and Cleopatra with this dress. from the bird made in rhinestones and the slit skirt to the details around the neck and on the gloves, this was an absolutely exquisite dress.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/alina-zagitova-in-action-during-the-senior-ladies-free-news-photo/1187332945?adppopup=true

5. Kamila Valieva, LP dress by Milena Bobkova- this dress does such a wonderful job accentuating Kamila's fluid skating with the types of fabrics used and the different cuts. the colors are beautiful and match the program, and i love the idea of the butterfly. the designer did a super job making it so it did not take away from her skating, only added to her movements.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/figure-skater-kamila-valieva-of-russia-performs-during-a-news-photo/1186744949?adppopup=true

6. Alina Zagitova, SP dress by Olga Ryabenko- i just love this dress...it's so feminine and sexy but simple. Alina looks so nice in lace and i like how there isn't too much bling on this dress, so the fabric can stand out.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/alina-zagitova-of-russia-competes-in-the-womens-single-news-photo/1192780430?adppopup=true

7. Mariah Bell, LP dress by Ladu- this is such a stunning dress and is perfect for Hallelujah. it's sparkly and blingy but not overstated or too much. it's almost angelic how the nude color fades to white, then to blue.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/mariah-bell-skates-in-the-ladies-free-skate-during-the-2020-news-photo/1201792196?adppopup=true

8. Kaori Sakamoto, LP dress, designer unknown- this is one of the most badass dresses i've ever seen. i looooove the shiny pleather fabric and the green rhinestones on the side of the dress and near the hands.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/kaori-sakamoto-of-japan-reacts-after-performing-her-free-news-photo/1199353741?adppopup=true

9. Wakaba Higuchi, SP dress, designer unknown (possibly Satomi Ito?)- this is such a classy dress that screams Sia. even the glove is half black! it's so flattering on Wakaba and i love the effect wearing her hair in a bun gives the complete look.

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/wakaba-higuchi-of-japan-performs-during-the-ladies-short-news-photo/1181994577?adppopup=true

10. Satoko Miyahara, SP dress by Juju Designs- another Egyptian themed program and another exquisite costume. i love how it isn't overdone, it's simple and black and your attention is drawn to the bling at the neckline.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B48Dg96nzX9/

there are sooooooooo many more gorgeous costumes and it was so hard to pick just 10!!!

i would easily say the designer of the year is Olga Ryabenko. not only did she take the majority of spots on my list, she did a wonderful job designing dresses that look good on each skater but also matching the programs perfectly, and accentuate skating styles for each skater.

I don't have designer information , but the wow dress for me is Madison Chock's FD Snake dress for its beauty, originality and overall functionality through all her acrobatic lifts.

Agreed. The designer of Madison's costume was Mathieu Caron

Madison had a lot of input too, as detailed here:
https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/...k-and-bates-reflect-on-amemorable-season.aspx

Making the impact even greater were the costumes and even Chock's hair was all in for the program. "I've perfected the hair since Salt Lake City," said Chock.

Chock literally studied images of snakes—their scales and patterns—to come up with ideas for her dress. She wanted her dress to look like a snake's skin, but not like a snakeskin fabric. She brought drawings to costume designer Mathieu Caron, who made sure it was functional while also creating wow moments. "Together we came up with something beautiful," said Chock.

For Bates, Dubreuil envisioned a turtleneck shirt. Chock found the braiding technique and showed it to Caron, which he incorporated. "I think it's my favorite costume I've had," said Bates.

Did somebody mention good costumes? (clears throat) Allow me to introduce our ladies, whose dresses are as beautiful as the skaters wearing them. While I could nominate like a hundred of them, I'll restrain myself and pick the ones I love best (I'm giving up on numbering them though). Oh, and while my darling squirtle's elegant, ethereal Somewhere in Time dress still takes the cake (we love you Lisa McKinnon) I'm counting it out since it's technically last season's.

- Wi Seoyoung, SP https://twitter.com/albina_fs/status/1208007744692748295 / https://twitter.com/1994x1207/status/1205796641514479617/photo/3 by Ahn Geumi
I am a total sucker for traditional East Asian costumes and I drooled over this dress the moment it was revealed at JGP qualifiers. It's hanfu-inspired (the soundtracks are from Chinese films and all), and is also beautiful like my beloved. She radiates what we call a "traditional Eastern beauty" in it, I've seen her live and can confirm.

- Kim Yelim, SP https://twitter.com/leaninseeker/status/1220291462488719361/photo/2 by Ahn Geumi
It's a stunner and it's a thousand times better live. It also won the national dress championships, which took place on the Korean skating thread here on GS. Black Swan done simple and graceful.

- To Jihun, FS https://twitter.com/Jinsk77/status/1206943120824422406/photo/1 by Edgeplus
From the coloring to the intricate beading, this dress evokes images of the desert for me and I love it. And did I mention her hairpiece? https://twitter.com/meridian10/status/1155516771475918848/photo/1 It's a stunning hairpiece.

- Lee Haein, SP https://twitter.com/EunpanN/status/1242051586903265281/photo/1 by Edgeplus
Classic and mature, with just the right amount of melancholy needed for Nocturne. You know your baby chick has grown up into a phoenix when you see her radiant in a dress like this.

- Kim Yelim, FS https://twitter.com/_xxxkkkk/status/1231573657840840707/photo/3 by Ahn Geumi
Yelim's favourite costume this season, and with very good reason. It's soft and delicate, appropriate for Love Story, but then it's not what you'd expect for Love Story. Yelim had beautiful dresses this season.

- Wi Seoyoung, FS by Ahn Geumi https://twitter.com/figure_wiiiing/status/1236356028259651585?s=09
Best green dress of the season. I will gladly pointlessly argue with anybody on that. Amélie done on a calm note, gentle yet poignant.

Whew that was difficult. It pains me to leave out the Firedance dress that little phoenix soared in, Young's blue Evita dress, Dabin's new wine-colored Gypsy Songs dress, and so, so many others, but the number is limited to 10 and I have other costumes I have to mention. Thank goodness Madison Chock's magnificent sexy snake dress is already covered.

- Gilles/Poirier, FD *merlot* version by Bobby and Sally Ackbarali https://twitter.com/with_jandi/status/1227975596388405249?s=09
I remember my jaw dropping as I saw the new, improved costumes at 4CC, they were absolutely beautiful. Everything came together for that moment of magic, and those costumes definitely took part.

- Boikova/Kozlovskii, FS https://twitter.com/asverit/status/1196545518844993537?s=19
Sasha's dress is honestly enough for an entry, but Mitya Bond didn't do so bad either. I loved these best out of all the pairs' costumes this season.

- Fear/Gibson, FD https://twitter.com/fs_amaya/status/1224054489088393218?s=09
Couldn't find a picture with his back shown, but Vogue man. Vogue. 'Nuff said.

- Maé-Bérénice Meite, SP https://twitter.com/asverit/status/1190547456297181184?s=09
Samba, baby. She does it like no other. And the dress is 100% Samba.

This is a fun idea! Our own alternative to the infamous ISU awards.

I feel bad as I don't know a lot of the designers and have attempted to search for them, but I must not be following the right avenues so people may be able to fill in the blanks. Apologies for not being as astute as I would like. Also I only have 8 for now...

1. Yuzuru Hanyu's Origin 2.0
I assume this is Satomi Ito's work. To me this is the most gorgeous figure skating costume to date, of any discipline. It's gorgeous - the colour, the detail, the sparkle :luv17: I find most of my choices difficult to imagine anyone else wearing, and this costume is so uniquely Hanyu. He looks regal and formidable.
https://mariakateshova.com/wp-content/gallery/hanyu-fs-gpf19/CJ7I2763.jpg

2. Rika Kihira's International Angel of Peace
I'm choosing the second variation in the muted green colour. I gasped when I first saw it, so beautiful and again I can't imagine it on anyone else. I've loved every iteration of her costumes this season, but had to go with this one as the most original.
https://66.media.tumblr.com/c1e073697628cc16328f2e5f33069273/9b0d1d698556d6bf-ec/s1280x1920/166e2277ae0efaf82befe8426262d050c5bce674.jpg

3. Madison Chock's snake dress
By Mathieu Caron - I think this will pop up on a lot of people's lists. It's a pretty special costume. Evan's is muted in comparison, would've been nice to see a little sparkle. But she shines all the more because of that I suppose! I have some issues with the program, but I can't deny how striking this costume is.
http://www.insideskating.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Madison-Chock-and-Evan-Bates-FD-2019-Finlandia-Trophy-1.jpg

4. Papadakis' + Cizeron's Fame costumes
I had to nominate both of them. I like the first iteration of this costume - the pastel pink on Guillaume and Gabi's entire look is just great. When the announcers introduced their group during the six minute warm ups they really popped.
https://olympics.nbcsports.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2019/11/gettyimages-1184875040-e1572628438936.jpg

5. Mae Berenice Meite's SP dress
By Juju Designs. This one grabs my attention as soon as she steps on the ice. Once again, can't imagine it on anyone else.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B4aYJIXnoff/

6. Kaori Sakamoto's Matrix dress
The little green details and the fake leather... she just looks badass  I love her SP costume too but decided to go with this one.

7. Gilles' + Poirier's FS costumes
The deep red wine version, not the beige. It's eye-catching on the ice. I was so happy when I saw this second iteration of their costumes, and sad to not get to see it again at Worlds.

8. Keiji Tanaka's SP shirt
Probably not the most popular choice, but I love this shirt. It's sassy. And I even liked it with the poofy sleeve addition.

Eva-Lotta's dress that MaHa75 posted earlier is stunning. I missed it somehow this season, it's freaking amazing!

I don’t know the designers, but the dresses that impressed me were:

Kaori Sakomoto’s Matrix

Anna Tsherbakova’s Firebird

Marin Honda’s blue FS dress

Alina Urushadze’s purple FS dress

Shoma Uno’s dedication to his GS costume variations

I can’t for the life of me remember the name, but one of the junior men skated Casanova in an intriguing outfit

B/K as well for Bond glamor

And, tbh, Panfilova’s simple white with blue dress was just charming

Yes!! Love everything about this. Big fan of all of Ichatdelune's picks too - especially Wi Seoyoung's dresses. I'm a sucker for green.

Speaking of green dresses, Misato Komatsubara's FD dress is so pretty (and her RD fire fringe dress is great too).

Yes, there is a lot of nice dresses. But best costume needs to take in the music, the program and the fact many are seeing the dress or costume from a distance. Some costume have amazing detail but from a distance do not read or wors just look like mush.

I am eagerly awaiting the World Tour of Madison's snake dress and every costume worn by a South Korean female skater.

Eagerly.

As you can see from the lists above, there are many other lovely costumes, but they do not compare.

That is all.
