Do we have the full list? Any juniors? I hope Alexei Krasnozhon is competing too.

Why can’t they do it on zoom? There could be a starting order and the judges click on each skater’s screen, they do their program, etc

In 2020 there has to be a way to do this. ISU could set the conditions for ranks across the world. With today’s technology and a bit of forward thinking, I have no doubt it can be done.

Jordan:clap: Looks like he has recovered from his "remove a plate" surgery (I can't imagine going through surgery again to *remove* a plate, but I'm not a young fit athlete.)

And I know this is not a big worry in the order of things in our world, but seeing the promo photo: Camden, Andrew T., Starr, Karen, all at Philadelphia International last year. And Timmy D. in previous years. (maybe others, but that's just from my memory)

I'm missing it:sad21:

Go Audrey Shin!

I am looking forward to this. A different kind of competition, to be sure. But if the skaters get do-overs if they fall, at least we will get to see each program as it was intended to be skated. This will provide a level playing field for displaying the chorography and composition of the program.

Quotes from Tomoki, Karen, Starr, Jason are in today's article from McCarvel:

Figure Skating Goes Virtual With Innovative Peggy Fleming Trophy Event
Is this the future in sports? It certainly could be an option, as an American figure skating competition will pit skaters head-to-head on Friday -- virtually.

https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/s...e-skating-virtual-event-jason-brown-team-usa/ (Jul 15)

(I think it is a stretch for the subtitle to say "head-to-head."

And AFAIK, the ISU has not [yet?] given any reason to believe that it is considering a virtual format for GPs or other ISU figure skating competitions? I wish that McCarvel had been upfront about that. Or if he knows something about the ISU's current thinking that we don't know, then I wish that he had been clear about that.)

Continuing the off topic  nostalgia for Philadelphia International (in the context of PFT entries):

Jordan also is among past Philadelphia International competitors. Maxine, Amber, Courtney, too. And Audrey (in Junior Ladies).

Emmanuel is a past Philadelphia non-international competitor.

ETA (on Jul 25):

Plus Emmanuel was a Philadelphia International competitor in 2015, the first year of the event.

Colorado newspaper article: Peggy Fleming Trophy figure-skating competition goes virtual

Excerpts:

“When all the rinks closed and everything was canceled we said, ‘What are we going to do?’” Fleming told the Cheyenne Edition last week from her home in the Denver area. “We really wanted to have the competition for the kids to have something to look forward to.”

Earlier this year, she and her husband of 50 years, Greg Jenkins, began working with
[Broadmoor Skating Club] to ensure the Peggy Fleming Trophy would go on in some form.

The broadcast will run 90 minutes ... Over the last month, Fleming taped several segments for the broadcast.

“I can feel the excitement,” said Gale Tanger ... “We wanted to showcase every one of these skaters. ..."

Bob Dunlop, U.S. Figure Skating’s Director of Events, worked closely with those involved with the Peggy Fleming Trophy to make sure the event was able to go on.

“Everything is being done as if it was an actual competition,” said Dunlop.

Congratulations to Amber. :yay: I'm thrilled for her.

(I hope that she will return to PFT in the future. She is a beautiful performer. :luv17:)

Andrew T. has choreographed his program for Peggy Fleming this year with Josh Farris!

https://twitter.com/andrewtorgjpfan/status/1283408058618527744

(according to Andrew's Japanese Fan Club twitter. They don't say if it's a competition program, or which one. At least according to "translate tweet").

Can't wait to see the results of this collaboration:dance3:

Phil Hersh has lots of good detail and good quotes this morning.

Virtual figure skating competition offers glimpse of sport’s possible future

By Philip Hersh
Jul 16, 2020, 8:30 AM EDT

https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2020/07/16/virtual-figure-skating-competition-peggy-fleming-trophy/

The entire Hersh article is worth reading, but some especially noteworthy parts:

First of all ;), Josh Farris :luv17: choreographed Camden's SP too, which was enlarged for PFT.
Music: “In This Shirt” by The Irrepressibles.

This was the basic premise: each skater would perform a program at his or her convenience between July 8 and 10. He or she would submit video of the program, to be shot from a high center-ice position. Multiple attempts were permitted, but the video chosen had to be of a single complete attempt, with no editing.
The seven judges and technical specialist David Santee ... watched the videos from eight different places via Zoom at the same time Tuesday, as if they were in an arena. They scored on iPads, using the IJS software they have at live events ...

[Karen] Chen ... chose an expanded version of a short program to Katy Perry’s version of “Rise” that Drew Meekins had choreographed for her to use this season. She did three “takes,” with about 30 minutes between each, for an iPhone recording done by her boyfriend, Camden ...
Torgashev ... shot iPhone video of Chen as a backup.
... The limitations of iPhone video, where close-ups can lead to a blur from pixelization, meant about half the rink was visible on nearly all of Chen’s video. That obviously reduced the size of her image.
“For the most part, all the skaters’ videos were clear,” Tanger said.
Pulkinen... also
[skated] three takes, using the third, as videographed by Torgashev.

The ISU is not [yet?] looking at a virtual format as a possibility for some events this season.
Lakernik: “No… At least at the moment.” Bianchetti: "... The matter has never been discussed so far.”

Similarly, from USFS spokesman Michael Terry: “The virtual concept has not yet been discussed for any other specific events, including the qualifying season (for the 2021 U.S. Championships).”

ETA:
Starr Andrews announced her PFT music: "Black Like Me"
https://www.instagram.com/p/CCt18GRJdgb/ (Jul 16)

ETA:

... I'm hoping that if I can watch the teaser promo then I can tune in to the livestream. It starts midnight Saturday morning for me!

Per USFS, it will be possible to watch outside the U.S.

And after its premiere tomorrow, PFT will remain available for on-demand viewing.

ETA (on Jul 19):

Water under the bridge at this point, but for posterity, the link for a local news preview of PFT from the day before USFS aired the competition:

It included an interview with Peggy Fleming -- plus some b-roll of Karen's and Jason's 2020 PFT programs (which would have been good sneak peeks , except that I did not come across the news story until after seeing the full PFT :hopelessness: ).

Yet another article on the Peggy Fleming Trophy, by AP writer Dave Skretta, with a few new quotes from Jason and Karen:

https://federalnewsnetwork.com/spor...-trophy-becomes-virtual-figure-skating-event/

(Jason saying that no crowd noise reminded him of the hundreds of times he practices a routine, and Karen discussing virtual competitions in light of her online classes).

Getting more publicity than usual due to the unusual nature of the comp and the times. :)

Fluff is going on right now. I hope they’re not going to have fluff between every performance.
