2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Chiming in to bump this thread back up to the top, but also with an observation.

While rational people recognize that the real excitement in US skating is with dance and men, the companion women's thread has over 300 pages.

Figure skating in the US is still primarily about the ladies, and while I don't exactly begrudge them, it's a shame that our other disciplines... MORE worthy disciplines this cycle... don't generate the same buzz.

I have to admit, baby Nathan was pretty amazing. :)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8LNVumcxXdc

Fabulous. And adorable. Some of Nathan's movements in this little number are recognizable in his skating today. Really cool. I still scratch my head at all the people who said last year that Nathan was only a jumper, or even at those who see his other qualities only now, as if he gained dance ability and performance nuance overnight.

But I did have the fleeting thought as I watched Baby Nathan in the lion costume, that I'll bet Shae-Lynne watched this, and probably all/many of his previous skates, in creating his Nemesis SP. Maybe it's only my imagination ... but OTOH I think Shae is just that imaginative, and that much of a genius at bringing out her skater's personality, to have looked for clues that far back.

I don't watch competitive skating only for the medals. (And yes, I said competitive skating. Not show skating, not exhibitions, and anyone who throws those words around will sorely tempt my Christmas spirit. I watch competitive skating for more than just medals)

Brava.:hap10: Well said. I must save your words for future use. Or at least paraphrase them.

There's something about competitive skating that brings out the magic and the spark. And I watch and love figure skating more for the spark and the magic than for the results.

Are the teleconferences for nationals available to be listened to?

I did perfunctory IN and google searches before asking this question, but no dice. So I thought someone here might know. :)

Also, I'm trying to bump this thread up to 100 pages. :yay:

Wow, Adam, I am clutching my pearls with that interview....

I like you (although I will admit I liked the curly haired boy from the Abingtons who did that beautiful Liszt the best of all), and I'm pretty sure that you do that "pump myself up trash talk" like you're in the NFL cause you think it helps your confidence. And if it does, well, cool.:cool14:

But if you *did* play in the NFL, the other team would be hanging that interview in their locker room.

ETA: 100 pages? US men, you deserve it:yes:

100 pages! For perspective, last season's thread, even with all the back-and-forth over World Team choices, only reached 99 pages.

This is a nice article. It's great to read Adam's quotes. I admire how well he's able to articulate his self-belief. Every athlete talks about how it's the mental attitude, even more than physical training, that determines their competitive state. I just feel like Adam has traveled forward by leaps and bounds in this respect, in the past couple of years. It's so great to see and hear.

I only have one quibble. Adam, you don't mean "mothers' competitors." You mean "competitors' mothers."

So, doing my part towards the next 100 pages:

- Vincent says he had shin problems in France
- France was an anomaly, they changed his training, he feels like a new person, and now he’s skating clean

https://twitter.com/fsonline/status/946177574421622784

- Adam tried a 4T, his foot hurt, he stopped and is fine, back to 4Z
- Brief clip of Adam doing his FS footwork, posted about a week ago. Do I see more one foot skating?

What do we think about all this? :)

Is this new (http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2017/12/27/how-us-olympic-figure-skating-team-chosen/)?

“From U.S. Figure Skating:

Team members will be selected by U.S. Figure Skating’s International Committee, taking into consideration the results of events in the following order of importance:

2018 U.S. Championships
2017 Grand Prix Final
2017 World Championships
2017 Grand Prix Series
2017 Four Continents Championships
2017 U.S. Championships
2017 World Junior Championships
2017 Junior (?) Grand Prix Final”

Before considering the tiers, these competitions are ranked in order of importance in selecting the Olympic teams. So nationals is the most important competition.

My Focus: Why Figure Skater Max Aaron Hopes Mental Toughness Will Earn His Spot On The Olympic Team

The page above has a very nice video (1:46) with voiceover by Max combined with footage of him in the ballet studio -- plus an accompanying article.

Go, Max :yay:.

ETA:

Five still images from Max's shoot are here:

USOC tweet with embedded video and article link:

Yes. In the past, they've posted the calls on Ice Network, but they didn't do that for the Skate America calls, so I'm not sure if we'll get to see them.

Agree with Mrs. P's post from last night that it is uncertain whether or not USFS/IN will revert back to posting audio of media teleconferences.

AFAIK, none of the pre-Nats audio for 2018 has been posted (at least, not yet???).

The article at the link now shows the last item on the list as "2017 Grand Prix Final" (article apparently was changed after Tahuu's post) -- but 2017 GPF also is a mistake.
2017 JGPF is what it should have said.

The criteria and tiers are what we have expected (based on earlier reports), but thanks to Tahuu for posting the new article.

New to me from the article:

The plan is to have three different team announcements within 24 hours of the conclusion of each discipline. The planned announcement schedule (all time estimates Pacific):
Morning of Saturday, Jan. 6 — Women
Morning of Sunday, Jan. 7 — Men/Pairs (possibly Saturday evening)
Afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 7 — Ice Dance

A different committee chooses the athletes for each discipline, but the criteria is the same across the board.

Ok, I'll play let's keep the thread count up too, while giving all skaters some love.....

a one minute piece on a local TV station about Tim Dolensky (I know Timmy is from the South, but Hampton Roads? He's from Georgia if memory serves), shows him practicing some jumps, and of course spins, that look good to me :agree:

Figure Skater with Musical Background is Lyrical on the Ice

Tim is actually originally from Birmingham, Alabama.

Seriously? Only if the other skaters' mothers are on the committee? And if the other skaters kick your butt at Nationals, what then? Ugh.

Saw a tweet from Lynn Rutherford that Zhou is blaming his scheduling for his poor performances. Someone oughta remind the kid that Max had the exact same GP schedule.

Are the teleconferences for nationals available to be listened to?

Yes, they're usually batch-posted on IN a few days after they're done. I'm looking forward to Max's!

Seriously? Only if the other skaters' mothers are on the committee? And if the other skaters kick your butt at Nationals...
Olympic Selection Criteria:
2018 U.S. Championships
2017 Grand Prix Final Adam (5th), Max (DNQ)
2017 World Championships: Both DNQ
2017 Grand Prix Series: Adam (2nd SA, 2nd NHK), Max (3rd CC, 7th TOF)
2017 Four Continents Championships: Both DNQ
2017 U.S. Championships: Adam (WD), Max (9th)
2016 Grand Prix Final: Adam(6th), Max (DNQ)

-According to criteria, Adam deserves to be on the olympic team more than Max. The only way Max will be selected over Adam is if Adam places 6th or lower at Nationals and Max places 2nd or 3rd. That scenario would be a real stretch. The only spot really up for grabs is the 3rd spot, and that is between Jason, Max, or Vincent.

Olympic Selection Criteria:

... 2016 Grand Prix Final: Adam(6th), Max (DNQ) ...

Again:
2016 GPF is *not* a criterion for USFS selection of the 2018 OWG team. (As previously mentioned above.)

2016 GPF was a mistake in the article, which should have said 2017 JGPF.

And the article does say 2017 JGPF further down:

Furthermore, U.S. Figure Skating broke down competitions into tiers in order of importance:

Tier 1
2018 U.S. Championships
2017 Grand Prix Final
2017 World Championships

Tier 2
2017 Grand Prix Series
2017 Four Continents Championships

Tier 3
2017 Challenger Series
2017 U.S. Championships
2017 World Junior Championships
2017 Junior Grand Prix Final

...The only way Max will be selected over Adam is if Adam places 6th or lower at Nationals and Max places 2nd or 3rd. ...

I do not buy the specificity of your prediction. Just my opinion.

.... The only spot really up for grabs is the 3rd spot, and that is between Jason, Max, or Vincent.

Disagree.
A case could be made that as of this moment, Jason (with his 7th place at 2017 Worlds and 3rd place at 2017 Nats, for example) is ahead of Adam in the running for the second spot.

I’m not sure how you got this out of the criteria - no one knows exactly how they’re weighted or used; no exact “formula” has been published awarding so many points for a 5th place finish at GPF, etc.

I think Adam has a good chance of making the team, but not if he places 6th at Nats. The only guy I can see being named to the team with a 6th place finish is Nathan - and then only because he’s the sole US guy with a medal shot.

And to top off our Christmas skating festivities

Fan Art Depiction of *all* the Men who qualified for US Senior Nats

It brought a smile to my face to see skaters whom I have not normally seen in fan art: Grant with QiuQiu; Sean winking, even Andrew and Jordan and Ben Jalovick! And the names cleverly written on the sleeves although I had gotten (almost) all of them without it;) Particularly Hamilton with Onigiri:laugh:

Well done:clap:

And the artist now has depicted Camden as well -- grouped with Vincent and Max -- for an illustration of just the three Team TomZ men .

ETA:
A digression for this thread, but I can't resist posting also the artist's depiction of Mirai :yay: from Team TomZ:

The tweets that I saw from Lynn Rutherford about Vincent's media call did not mention scheduling.

I did see the one below from @fsonline, but IMO, "schedule" was not a reference to Vincent's GP schedule. Sounds to me as if he is talking about his training schedule -- what a particular training day/week/month holds for him. YMMV.

Zhou on 9th place at Internationaux de France: "I think France was an anomaly. We realized we were pushing too hard. We’ve made the training much smarter, we're managing the schedule much better, & I think those are vital changes that have had a very positive impact." #USChamps18

Or if you were talking about another tweet, what exactly did it say??

So now we’ve heard a bit more from Adam, Max and Vincent. And phew, they all sound healthy and confident.

Seriously? Only if the other skaters' mothers are on the committee? And if the other skaters kick your butt at Nationals, what then? Ugh.

Adam’ point is that he is the one to kick butt - It’s called pre-game pep talk

Saw a tweet from Lynn Rutherford that Zhou is blaming his scheduling for his poor performances. Someone oughta remind the kid that Max had the exact same GP schedule.

I din’t see that? Only the tweet ice coverege mentioned which I read as he has changed his training schedule.

Oh, boy… I really, really, really hope the top three butt-kickers at nationals = the Olympic team!

Yeah, it probably was the other tweet ice coverage mentioned. I don't have my computer at the moment so I'm just working on my phone.

And why the heck is 2017 Worlds listed ahead of 2017 GP series on that list?
