First of all - the film El was referring to was about his brother - Jason Kelce.
Oops. Sorry about that.
That's the second time in recent weeks that I thought that a set of siblings were the same person
I would be curious to know how many American football players are actually well-known outside of this country. I believe - especially at this point in time - Ireland is the top seed in the Rugby World Cup, but I couldn't possibly name one single player on that roster. But I can name Niall Horan, Michael Flatley, Sinead O'Connor and other celebrities who hailed from Ireland. I honestly don't think you can compare sports to concert performers as it's more country-centric. I know that anybody who follows pro football in the US definitely knows who Travis Kelce is but many of them (as evidenced by posts on social media) couldn't name one song that Taylor sings. Travis is also in quite a plethora or commercials and has many sponsors. I'm including State Farm and Nike among others. His celebrity star is quite bright - especially after winning his second Super Bowl. I do think that anyone who presumes these two are together for publicity is living just uninformed.
To be fair, I couldn't name any player in the Irish rugby team either. Or any rugby player, for that matter. Because I don't follow the sport. And the same with cricket. In fact, I'm notorious for frequently getting cricketers and rugby players mixed up. I might have a vague recognition of the name (usually because of who they are married to, or because they have appeared on a TV show I watch), but I couldn't tell you which sport they do!
And that is the point I am making. Unless you are talking about somebody like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or the Williams sisters, sportspeople are usually only known to people who actively follow their sport.
As for Taylor Swift, I am amazed that there are people who couldn't name any of her songs. That said, I can only name two ("Love Story" and "Shake It Off"). But, they were both big hits that were never off the radio at the time.
You know, although it can raise their profile amongst people who do not follow their sport, I don't like it when sportspeople start behaving like they are celebrities rather than sportspeople. I liked Lewis Hamilton when he first came into Formula 1. Here was a guy who was born the same year as me, and who came from a very humble background, but who made it to the top because of his sheer talent. But then he started dating Nicole Scherzinger, and started thinking of himself as a celebrity. It went to his head. And that put me off him.
I strongly believe that while sportspeople are still actively competing, they should concentrate on their sport and not be letting themselves get drawn in by the bright lights of the celebrity lifestyle. Sporting careers are relatively short, and they should make the most of theit talent while they can. There is plenty of time to persue these other things once they are retired.
