okay, I have to say that I envy them so much, they have a lot of energy. They have been doing media stuff non stop since they won the Team bronze medals and Korea-Michigan-NY-stuck in NY airport-LA and still Alex posted on the instagram story how he could not sleep last night because of jet-lag. Seriously?!!! :hpull: They have not had time to rest and he can not sleep? I would be able to sleep during a rock concert on some embers :bed: :dbana:.

I noticed Alex’s dark circles in the most recent interview with A Plus. Maia somehow looks fresh as a daisy even though she must be exhausted too. Don’t know how they do it but I’m loving all the content!

So impressive! This is a young couple who love their sport but are diversified enough to branch in many directions. Such maturity!

Do US ice dancers get some kind of support (besides sponsors) from the State? I have watched shibsib -vlogs and noticed that they travel a lot, including classes at different coaches, flights, hotels and all the competitions all around the world.. how can they afford it?

I don't think any of us are privy to the Shibs' financial situation. I do know their father has a great job at Cowen as a managing director and senior research analyst covering biotechnology stocks.

http://www.cowen.com/profile/chris-shibutani/

Before this job, he did equity research and was a medical doctor before that. I think it's been stated that their parents own a share of the rink where they train in Canton as well.

This article has more information about their parents: https://heavy.com/sports/2018/02/maia-alex-shibutani-parents-mother-father-chris-naomi-family/

With all that said, I don't think we fully know what their actual financial situation is.

That said, I do know Maia was a two-time recipient of the Women's Sport Foundation scholarship and they probably do rely on their sponsorships to pay for all the off-ice consulting that they do.

The Shibs got a mention last night on the Jimmy Kimmel show during Andy Samberg's appearance:

How Social Media Can Help Show What An Olympian Is Worth -- And Close The Gender Pay Gap
https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanag...dia-to-close-the-gender-pay-gap/#2928e49c748f

Using its Hookit Valuation Methodology (HVM), the algorithm provides an earned media value (tangible dollar amount) to engagements by combing social interactions (likes, shares, comments and video views) with a content promotion quality score (size, clarity, position of logos), promotion type (hashtags or mentions), and an industry standard Cost Per Engagement (CPE).

During Pyeongchang 2018, Hookit found that Team USA's female athletes drove more social media engagements per athlete through the Olympics than Team USA's male athletes. While snowboarder Shaun White had the most engagements (11,805,104) of all athletes competing, the next three most engaging Team USA athletes on social media were all women – ice dancer Maia Shibutani (7,033,652), skier Lindsey Vonn (6,947,603) and snowboarder Chloe Kim (4,363,01).

I know this is a little negative, but this article online from nbc has quotes from the us ice dance teams going to worlds, and zach donohue has some things to say about the shibsibs.

“I wish the Shibutanis were [in Milan] because last year I gave them my medal,” Donohue said, “and I don’t plan on doing that this year.”

When the shibs lost their national title, they didn't blame them at all, and it's frustrating to see bad sportsmanship from a member of their own country.

... “I wish the Shibutanis were [in Milan] because last year I gave them my medal,” Donohue said, “and I don’t plan on doing that this year.”

... The shibsibs are always so respectful and humble? When they lost their national title, they didn't blame them at all ...

In Zach's quote, he is doing the exact opposite of blaming the Shibs.

Zach is blaming himself.

Ah I see, I may have misinterpreted it. At the same time, I do think he could have phrased it better, as it sounded to me like he had already staked a claim on the medal. I first saw this article on twitter, so many others had the same interpretation as well.

I still think it was an unsportsmanlike quote and he's basically saying the Shibs didn't win their medals (as did Madison in her own quote) but that H/D handed it to them as if the Shibs didn't earn it. With that logic, does Zach think the Shibs handed him and Madison their National title? I do really like H/D's skating, but all season long they've been making these sorts of comments and showing an extreme entitlement (mainly Zach but Madison started in as well). One or two comments I would have given them the benefit-of-the-doubt, but in context with everything else and the fact that it's gotten worse as the season has went along, it's clear there's some intentional lack of respect going on. I think they've been too obsessed not only with the results but with beating the Shibs that it made them focus on the wrong thing for the Olympics.

Exactly, it is almost as they think that Maia and Alex are taking something that belongs to them. I mean:¨ I gave them MY medal¨ :disapp:,

excuse me!!!! ¨ MY medal¨????? I had no idea that was his medal :sarcasm:

I am sorry. I don't understand how anyone can read that quote and not see transparent lack of sportsmanship, disrespect, and entitlement. I understand H/D are competitive and hungry for success, but disrespecting their teammates in so not classy. Saying "MY medal" as if the Shibutanis were handed anything without putting in the work and the mental strength to perform under pressure, something that H/D obviously lack, is just not cool.

By the way, I remember some time ago people asking why Maia and Alex don't hang out with H/D, well.. I guess reading those comments of H/D, we have the answer. I see no reason why Maia and Alex would be interested in hang out with that kind of people.

Well I think the record - 2 Olympic medals, 3 World medals, a 4CC championship (+ 3 other 4CC medals), 2 National titles (+ 5 medals all top 3), 2 GPF medals and 15 GP medals -- speaks for itself. All those medals were earned fair and square.

Enjoy that lobster roll, Alex.

I do change my avatar as the mood strikes -- sometimes more frequently, sometimes less frequently. (Lately the mood has been striking more frequently.)

It was CaroLiza_fan  a long while ago who explained in a thread somewhere as to how to see the number of posts in a thread per member.
