I have a feeling the commentators on US/CAN/British Eurosport tv are going to have trouble mispronouncing her name next year. It took Ted almost 2 full years to start saying it right and we know she is one of his favorites.
The chances the eurosport commentators will get it is about 0%. We still have Gwillem Cizeron and he is 5 time european and 3 time world champ. The eurosport commentators are hopeless but part of what I look forward to each competition (hearing them butcher every name)

Johnny Weir should get it right. But other than that, yeah. It would be much easier if it were transliterated as Alyona rather than Alena because then it would be basically phonetic. Of course, commentators should do their homework. But I understand why they would mess up, since for an English speaker "Alena" looks easy to say and so you think you know it, but it's not the correct way. Someone just needs to tell all of them that it's like Aljona Savchenko or something.

1) There was a cute tidbit about Alёna in Daniil Samsonov's recent interview:
https://fsrussia.ru/intervyu/4213-daniil-samsonov-kharakter-u-menya-ochen-stalnoj.html
From GoogleTranslate:
- What books are you reading?
- I'm reading Harry Potter. Alena Kostornaya, with whom we are friends, gave me the history of the Olympic Games for my birthday - all four volumes of the encyclopedia. One must know how everything was born.
She really is like a big sister to him, I guess! Great gift! :luv17:

I found some fan opinions of Alёna by people who saw the SP live, and I thought I would share:
2) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtY6m6HlNhM/
From GoogleTranslate:
Here it is the most unreal divine skating ... I didn’t know that Alena has it ... you just have to see her live at least once! She merges with the music, lives in it ... very musical, choreographic, airy and unreal ... I really liked it
https://www.instagram.com/p/BtamS-Cl5vZ/
The most magical athlete with the most incredible inspiration on the ice @alenka_kostornaya. Her skating makes you forget to breathe!

3) I especially like this one, because the author was not really an Alёna fan to begin with (her favorite is Anna S).
https://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/odinokie/2335665.html
Gradually, the turn came to Alena Kostornaya. I have a rather complicated, ambiguous attitude towards her, but all this is forgotten, erased to zero, when I see her short program. The word masterpiece seems too insignificant when I see Angel Alena. A brilliant program, unearthly, Alena descended from heaven, an incredible beauty of dress, soul-taking music - everything came together and perfection was born. Words fail.

It seems to me that Alena is a skater that you have to see live to fully appreciate...I hope I'll get to see her at some point!

4) Can she be any cuter??

Ted doesn't say it right, but it's much better than he did at first. The right way is https://youtu.be/wRBEaHqjkAo

I think he said it right maybe once 😂 at GPF:

Not perfect, but better than pronouncing it like “Alina” which he was doing before.

They’re hopeless. They also called Mariah Bell Mariah Carey so...

Here are some more little tidbits...

1) Alysa Liu was asked who she wants to be able to skate like (in terms of skating skills), and she said Alёna!! (And yes, she mispronounced it, unfortunately...) "She skates sooo beautifully. So beautiful." :luv17:
https://www.facebook.com/usfigureskating/videos/322988411684627/
See about 14:40 in the video. Jackie Wong also admits he loves her. :agree:

2) The person who blogged about Alena's SP also wrote an entry about the FP:
https://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/odinokie/2340892.html
The GoogleTranslate didn't make too much sense to me, but maybe one of our Russian-speaking fans can translate?
Alena's Juliet - to all Juliet Juliet. Although, if in the short program, the masterpiece came out of many components, then the success of the program is largely due to Alena herself. Beautiful, wonderful, but no WOW AH effect. What again does not detract from the skill of Kostornaya itself. Her natural grace, plastic always with her. And Axel - you can watch it forever. Well, a smart bear, a gift from fans, could not help but delight the audience)

I guess Alёna's free program is not a masterpiece, but she makes it work..? Which we already knew...

3) The other tidbit I learned from the above blog entry was that a) Alena was watching the men's FP, which was somewhat unusual since she still had to skate later that day. And b) during Alexei Erokhov's program, she went to stand by the boards to watch him (see the first picture in the entry), and then she was standing with Daniil Gleikhengauz while Alexei received his scores in the K&C (second pic).
Nice to see her supporting the other Team Tutberidze skaters!

Did she change into Edea Pianos?

Looks like it from her latest IG post. I was hoping she would change to the Ice Fly model because the Pianos cut off the skaters leg line and hers is so nice. Oh well - having good support and stability is more important.

Niiiice, I hope this means the 3A practice can start again soon :)

I hope she will be used to her new boots by jrWorlds.

(Or maybe she just used another girls boots for the photo haha)

Probably, she is perhaps still growing slowly and advancing in skating more rapidly, so she'll need new boots and blades every once in a while. Edea has a very fine ambassador in Alyona Kostornaya, that's for sure. She is the hallmark of artistry in figure skating.

Alyona is very small of height though: https://www.instagram.com/p/BoWt-ZWh-tT/

PS: Trusova also visits the same shop/fitter, but Aleksandra is on a different brand AFAIK: https://www.instagram.com/p/BhT0KC8BRgX/

Do different brands of blades really matter in small skaters of about 40 kgs body weight when the dimensions and hardness, tensility of the steel runners are the same?

Here's a short video of Alena at the Twizzle shop...

Unfortunately, I have no idea what she's saying... But she's still adorable! :luv17:

I hope she gets used to her new boots quickly! The Pianos are going to be a lot stiffer than her old boots, so hopefully that doesn't affect her too much... I wonder if she had that wrap around her ankle at Jr Nationals because her old boots were too soft..

I was wondering about the thick ankle wrap she was wearing and broken down boots could be the cause. She still has about a month until Junior Worlds so she should be ok breaking in the boots in time. I just hope she’s not doing the cup final because that might be too much too soon in new boots.

Maybe this company made her take down her most recent IG post? If they are sponsoring her and she posted the photo before them, they might have wanted her to remove it until after they posted themselves? I hope she didn’t get in any trouble and will be able to repost the chique sport picture.

She just says thanks to the shop for help in making choice of equipment and to it's employees for their work.

Thanks j00mla! :thank:

BTW, The Skating Lesson had very nice things to say about Alena in their recap of Russian Jr Nats:

And it seems that Miki Ando is also a fan...? Apparently Miyabi Oba did a live video, and someone asked her who she likes among Trusova/Scherbakova/Kostornaia. I don't know what she answered, but Miki Ando wrote "Kostornaya."

I'm sooo happy about her new Piano's!! With her training 3A and doing all those 3-3 in boots that were more suited to anything up to double jumps I always worried for the stress it puts on her body...

Russian Cup Final - I would love to see her defend her title! It won't matter much if she competes and loses here, but if they rather prepare for jrWorlds I'm also excited. So far Team Eteri's decicions have been spot on for Alena (I was worried after her 2nd jgp)
