Earlier, as I was sleepily sipping on my first morning coffee, I read a GS thread with a link to Julian Lee’s Nebelhorn exhibition. It’s a medley of parodies that really put a smile on my face thank: BillNeal). What a fun way to wake up. Besides the humour, it was darn good skating too.
I thought, with all the serious debates and on the upcoming season, minimum age for quads, GOE bullet points, judging, large fed unfair advantages, pre-rotations, under-rotations, blah, blah, blah (albeit very interesting, informative and educational blah, blah, blah!), how about somewhere to share your favourite programs that make you laugh. In other words, a thread of levity to escape. As I am relatively new to GS, this may have already been done in the past, now gathering dust in the archives and I’ve missed it.
Watching Julian’s ballet rendition made me think of Debi Thomas’ “Wanda” routine, even though represented as completely different skill sets.
I would love to have you share programs you’ve enjoyed that were designed to be comedic.
Looking further back in time than recent history, here’s the first few that came to mind:
Kurt Browning’s Rag-Gidon
Scott Hamilton’s 12 Days of Christmas
Ryan Bradley’s Amadeus – amazingly, a competitive program! (…and one of my faves)
Hough & Ladret’s Olympic Fanfare Exhibition – skated at 1988 Canadians in Victoria, BC. I can’t find a video but saw it live and still remember Doug descending the arena steps at its start. I did laugh.
Your turn…make us
I have a bet with myself on how long it will take for one particular routine to be mentioned. I'll let you know if I win (or lose) said bet.
