Olympics and Worlds Qualification Table
**As per Rule 400.A.3 (linked further down in this post), the total number of spots allocated to countries earning multiple spots is 17, which exceeds the allotted 16 Quota Spots. Thus, as the USA is the lowest placing country to earn 2 spots, they are not permitted to enter a second pair at the Olympics. This does not affect their ability to enter 2 entries to Worlds.
Olympics and Worlds Qualification Rules
Multiple Spots:
For 3 spots:
- If a country only has a single skater/couple, that skater/couple must place 1st or 2nd.
- If a country has multiple skaters/couples, the top two of these must have placements totalling 13 or less
For 2 spots:
- If a country only has a single skater/couple, that skater/couple must place 3rd through 10th.
- If a country has multiple skaters/couples, the top two of these must have placements totalling 28 or less
Special notes:
- Skaters/couples qualifying for the FS/FD but placing 17th or lower receive 16 placement points regardless of actual placement value
- Skaters/couples competing in the SP/SD but not qualifying for the FS/FD receive 18 placement points regardless of actual placement value. (Exception: Only 16 teams qualify for the FS in Pairs, so the 17th team would therefore receive 17 placement points)
Olympic Qualifications
(ISU Qualification Procedures document)
- Maximum spots per discipline: 30 for Men's, 30 for Ladies, 20 for Pairs, and 24 for Ice Dance
- Quota spots determined at the 2017 World Championship: 24 for Men's, 24 for Ladies, 15 for Pairs, and 18 for Ice Dance
-- ETA (9/28/2017): France has given up 1 pairs quota spot (retaining their second) and Denmark has given up their Ice Dance spot. Numbers for Worlds quota spots have been adjusted accordingly.
- Countries may obtain multiple (2 or 3) Olympic quota spots at the 2017 World Championships as per policies spelled out above under "Multiple Spots". Quota spots will then be filled by the next best ranked countries who have not obtained multiple entries, until all quota spots allocated via 2017 World Championships are full.
- Rule 400.A.3) If applying multiple spot allotment causes the Quota Spots to be exceeded, the last country to reach the placement totals required to gain a second spot will not be permitted to enter said second spot.
- Remaining quota spots (6 for Men's, 6 for Ladies, 5 for Pairs, and 6 for Ice Dance) will be determined at the 2017 Nebelhorn Trophy, which will take place from September 27th - September 30th, 2017 in Oberstdorf, Germany. Countries may obtain a maximum of 1 spot per discipline for which they have not obtained spots via the 2017 World Champions.
-- ETA (9/28/2017): France has given up 1 pairs quota spot (retaining their second) and Denmark has given up their Ice Dance spot. Numbers for "remaining quota spots" have been adjusted accordingly.
- Host Spots, if necessary, will be determined after the Team Event qualifications are settled. Provided that there are remaining places from the 10 "Additional Athletes Quota" spots available for Team Event countries not fielding a full team, South Korea is eligible to a maximum of 1 host spot per discipline they do not qualify for through the 2017 World Championships or 2017 Nebelhorn Trophy.
--ETA (4/4/2017): The ISU released a list of official spots qualified through Worlds, which also states that South Korea get host spots in disciplines they don't qualify one for, but makes no mention of the "Additional Athletes Quota" leftover spots part.
--ETA (9/28/2017): A more recent document from May, Communication 2093, still includes the "Additional Athletes QUota" leftover spots provision again, so the original Host Spot info stands.
