Bandit Petersburg is back!

Zhenya skated it with Evgeni Plushenko.

Note: Bandit Petersburg is an old Russian series. Plushenko and Semenenko are the only top skaters who used its theme for a competitive program (which was considered quite extraordinary decision).

A little bit of my thoughts after yesterday.

Zhenya's first nationals were also in Chelyabinsk, it was 3 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

The short program is a masterpiece. They changed it a little bit, it became even better. It's a pity about the q-call on the 4S, but on the other hand, performing last would have been worse, maybe. In general, this time Zhenya coped with SP much better than in previous Nats. Last time he did the jumps, but lost levels. This time he did the step sequence very well, maybe he doesn't skate fast, but I like his steps.

And so, after the short program Zhenya was in a perfect position to win again. He gave up the 4Lo, it was the right decision, he just didn't need it to win. He had a big gap over Gumennik because of his mistake, and Vlad wouldn't have won it because of PCS. Although there were flaws in the free skate (not very good second 4T, most non-jumping elements, time violation). This skate was enough to beat Gumennik, of course, there was too big gap. And Dikidzhi made a small mistake. But in general, if Zhenya skated perfectly, as he can do, he wouldn't need Dikidzhi's mistake to win.

It's a bit of a shame Kolyada didn't commentate Nats. Last time he spoke very well about Zhenya.

Overall, Zhenya has done very well under pressure two years in a row. Not without small mistakes, but his opponents made more costly mistakes.

Now there are an Exhibition Gala and The Little Mermaid to look forward to.
