Thanks for starting this FF! I only watched Ilia for the first time yesterday because you posted a link in the US Men's thread. I really look forward to watching his future programs now. :) I'd sort of brushed off comments by others suggesting he's a threat even for this year's Olympic team, although I'd read his interview where he said that's his present goal. Not brushing them off any more.

Also, his mom's history is very interesting, winning 4th at 1999 worlds at age 26, same as Maria Butyrskaya, who won. In those days, age 26 was practically considered geriatric for figure skating. Oh, wait .... :ROFLMAO:

Of course! I was thinking for a bit to make it, but I wasn't sure if I needed to add in all the scores, links, etc. So I asked and found out I didn't need to. He's from my home county so of course there's a bit of bias, but hey, hometown skaters doing well makes me very happy.

LOL I'm 26 right now.

Well, because of the criteria that the ISU put up, Ilia is going to the JGPF!!!!! I honestly wanted to dance yesterday when I found out, but I was at work, so I couldn’t without getting stares lol.

Ilia is first in the SP with 81.31. Hopefully he stays clean tomorrow. Don’t know if I can watch it or not.

Congratulations Ilia!:hap10:What was most impressive about this win was the strategy behind it. It was a mature performance where he just went for a 4T and 4S even though he could have gone for his full arsenal. But he understood the assignment. Great job!!!

Met Ilia when he was a young kid and immediately knew this boy has the talent.

At a young age he was a head above the competition, especially after winning the nationals at the juvenile level. I think it was only in the Boxborough MA Eastern Sectionals where he didn't qualify to the nationals when he was competing in novice men. It was a huge heartache for him, but at that time he was just learning his triples. He uncharacteristically fell on several triples. That was 2017.

Fast forward to this year where he has improved by leaps and bounds especially with his quads. His air position and jumping technique are so good. He was attempting 4 quads early in the season but it was a good decision to pare it down to only 2 that he has a higher probability of landing. Saw him in Skate Milwaukee in July this year at the Junior Cup and he wasn't able to do his planned 4 quads, only 2. In the Leesburg Championship Series, he did 2 quads.

He's got the right lineage. Coached by his mom and dad, mom Tatiana Malinina won the Grand Prix Final in 98-99 beating Slutskaya and Butryskaya. Ilia's Insta handle used to be lutzgod as that's the mom's expertise. In one competition this year, he told Jacob Sanchez that Jacob needs to get lessons with his mom to fix Jacob's lutz because the mom is so good at teaching that. Roman's (Ilia's dad) expertise is the flip.
