Nathan Chen has been speaking to Meryl Davis as well, and Meryl asked the 19-year-old Yale student about being back in familiar surroundings with his coach, Rafael Arutyunyan, at least for this week.

"It's great to see him here and and I do occasionally Facetime him when I'm struggling a little bit. I think the biggest thing that I miss (being at school) is just having a bunch of other athletes to train with. It's super nice to see Raf again, he gives me a lot of support and a lot of help in places that I didn't think I'd need them, so it's good to be here with him.

"Any time that I'm at competition I get a whole bunch of adrenaline and a whole bunch of energy just because of the audience, because of the atmosphere that I'm around, and of course that's largely based off the athletes that I'm skating with as well.

The practice reports have made me a little stressed, very much wanted Nathan to do well here. Now I'm not too sure I will enjoy watching it live. I hope ppl will post updates on this page.

I am not too concerned, his practices at Nationals weren't perfect either. I just hope him stay mentally strong and focused during his performance.

God, the fact that his 4F is so unstable this week has me really worried :( I almost wish he'd go for the 4Lz instead, in his SP. He doesn't do 4Lz as much during practice, yet it seems to be more reliable...?
(I wonder if this is a deliberate precaution this season, where he has to pace himself with the 4Lz now and in the future, after he's had that ankle problem throughout the second half of last season?)

Nathan says he has 3.5 hrs of class a day, and spends about six hours studying - and also "It's not unusual for students to leave school and come back"

6 hours on top of those 3.5, or altogether...?

He's talking about the possibility of leaving Yale an awful lot lately, is that some strategic foreshadowing, Nate? ;)

Good thoughts for Nathan's 4F:pray:

Hoping after another night of good rest, no more jet lag, more of Raf's magic - it will be ok. He has done some nice ones in practice - he can do it :luv17:

1111bm - I had similar thoughts about 4Lz, but 4F has been working (mostly) for him this season.

The article quotes him as saying he studies for about 6 hours, seems this would be outside of his class time.

That's would be a pretty normal first year number, especially since that sounds like a bit of a low number of class hours for someone in science (compared to my experience in Canada only).

Yeah, but I thought he kept his course load to a minimum, so I would assume that he also needs to study less than someone who takes several more courses.
And if I add those 6 hours to his day, that would mean he usually goes to sleep at 1-2 am... and then apparently gets up at 9:15...

As impressive as his discipline and work ethic are... that doesn't sound like something he can (or should) keep up for a prolonged period of time... yes, there are people out there whose lives are also crazy busy, who juggle several jobs etc, but Nathan trains on an elite level, so his needs for rest and recovery must be different than those of the average person. I hope he's not exploiting his body too much in the long run, even if for now, he's making it work. The question is, will he be able to keep it up for another year or two years...

Doesn’t seem like he’s taking the minimum course load - he’s taking Calculus, Statistics, Psychology, and a music class.

Add to that getting to locations and getting changed several times a day, basic personal hygiene such as taking a shower or brushing your teeth... (he might be quick at all of that, but it adds up throughout the day), EATING! (when has he ever time to eat a decent meal I wonder? he must be snacking constantly while he's on the road.. no idea how he can keep his weight, much less his muscle mass), socialising (that goes beyond learning together in study groups) and at least a little leisure time to give his mind a few breaks throughout the day...

I thought the minimum was 4 courses per semester? (9 at the end of your first year I think? Which is why he would have to take at least one summer course)

I guess it depends on your definition of ‘minimum’. He would need an average of 4.5 course credits per term to graduate. The minimum course load allowed is 3 course credits in a term.
