Kicking this thread off to let you know that Eric Frenzel will be the flagbearer for Germany at the Opening Ceremony.
Really pleased to hear this, because Nordic Combined is a sport that often gets overlooked. Which is disappointing, given that it is a sport which requires the participants to master two very different things.
These guys should be applauded, so it is good to see them getting the recognition.

Ever since he made his World Cup debut in December, I have wondered if Aaron Kostner was related to Carolina and Isolde. But I couldn't find out anywhere.
However, I have just looked at his Olympic profile, and it says that he is related to both of them. But, it doesn't elaborate in what way.
A thing I like about the Olympic Profiles is that they give references for each section. So, I tried to check out all the references it gave for that section, but the only one I could actually find was his NBC Olympic profile. And it didn't elaborate either. :gaah:
We know Carolina and Isolde are cousins. So, is Aaron another cousin of their's? Or the son of a cousin? (I think it would be well known if he was a brother or a nephew of either of them).
Just curious to know.
Whatever the answer, it is amazing to see so much talent in very different wintersports within the same family. :agree:

Just to let you know, because of the wind earlier, things are running a bit behind schedule. According to the Live Timing, there are about 20 jumpers to go in the Trial Round.
Consequently, Eurosport 1 is sticking with the Curling for now.

Yipes! Despite the ski jumping portion being delayed, the cross-country portion is still going ahead at the scheduled time. (EDIT: actually, it's starting at quarter to the hour, so 15 minutes later than scheduled).

So Nordic Combined is like the Penthalon for Winter Olympians, sounds pretty cool!
Is there a downhill portion as well, or am I just imagining that? I love downhill skiing!
Although cross country skiing isn't the funnest thing to watch I agree, although I will be on the look out for Tonga Man.

Nope, it's just ski jumping and cross country.
They used to have two rounds of ski jumping in the Nordic Combined, but it has been cut down to one round of jumping for a good while now.
I should point out, these are athletes that specifically do Nordic Combined. It's not athletes coming in from ski jumping and cross country skiing.
That said, sometimes you do see some countries that don't have many specialist ski jumpers bringing in Nordic Combiners for Ski Jumping team competitions. But, given the way the competitions are scheduled, this generally doesn't happen at the Olympics.
And I am sure the Estonians wish that they could do it, as they have 3 specialist ski jumpers in Pyeongchang, and you need 4 to enter the team competition.
