Sam finished 3rd out of 6 in the FS, with a score of 104.45. This meant that he remained in 3rd place overall, with a score of 158.95.
Again, there was no livestreaming of the Britannia International, so this analysis is based purely on the protocols.
I'm still relatively new at looking at the Protocols, so I was confused when I saw what his first element was. I'd never seen "+SEQ" written after a couple of jumps before. I thought it meant that he had stuck a step sequence onto the end of his jump combination, and I couldn't imagine it! But, it turns out that it meant that the two Double Axels he did were done in sequence rather than in a true combination. Anyway, he got +0.77 in GOE and +2's and +3's from the Judges, so it must have worked out alright!
The same can't be said for the Triple Flip that he did as his second element. He didn't have a clear edge on the Triple Flip, and so got minuses all round.
The combination he did as his third element, the Triple Lutz-Double Toe, went well, though. But, the next combination didn't. It was a Triple Toe-Half Loop-Double Flip. But, the Half Loop was downgraded and the Double Flip didn't have a clear edge. This was the second most costly element of the programme, getting -2.10 in GOE, -4 from Judge 2, and -5 from all the other Judges.
The Change Foot Camel Spin went well, but then he was let down by three jumps. The first one, a Lutz, he Singled out, which meant it was an invalid element that scored absolutely nothing. The second one, a Triple Lutz, he fell on, which earned him -2.95 in GOE, and -5 from all the Judges. The third one was a Single Toe which, although not an invalid element, earned him 0 in GOE and 0's from all the Judges apart from Judge 1, who gave him -3!
Although the three jumps did not turn out very well, he did get credit for doing each of them in the second half of the programme.
Everything went much better after this, getting positive GOE and Judges marks for all of his final 4 elements.
Sam finished the FS 1.75 points behind 2nd position, Brandon BAILEY (GBR), and 16.08 points ahead of 4th position, Charles Henry KATANOVIĆ (HRV).
Overall, Sam was 5.18 points behind 2nd position, Bailey, and 19.15 points ahead of 4th position, Katanović.
Although Graham Newberry was a long way in front, there hadn't been much covering the rest of the field after the SP. So, Sam did a great job in making sure he maintained his place on the podium.
You can't get much better than winning a medal in your first competition of the season! It's a good foundation to build on for the season ahead.
WELL DONE!!!
