Lena and Liza are hilarious - love it! Hope Liza doesn't catch Lena's illness though, they are looking too cozy.
Love it  and it was even cuter since it looked like Lena was the one protecting and comforting Liza when she was the one under the weather - Liza resting her head on Lena instead of the other way around - adorable.

Finally catching up with the ladies. Liza was perfect, but she was good enough, only a couple of minor errors. Hail to the true Queen of the Ice!

And Gracie was massively impressive for me. Immense.

It's still disgraceful to me, though, looking at the strong, powerful, clean jumps these two ladies have, that someone who gets almost a full revolution on their toepick is the World silver medallist...

If Gracie had skated a clean SP, with her LP performance, she could have been the silver (or bronze) medalist. Although I don't like Satoko's jumps and it seems to me that judges love her (actually judges love Gracie too) and the technical caller seemed more lenient to her than to others in this competition.

Did anyone catch the look on Satoko's face in "the box" when Liza's score was announced? She scowled! I guess she hoped she was going to win gold, even though Liza had a 10-point lead after the SP.

I don't think so. How can you make all that up?

She's a serious girl. She and Shoma are quite stone-faced with people they don't know well. Leading spectators to assume they are angry or sulky ...they are just very shy-types.

Satoko is a competitor just like any other. She wants to win, or she wouldn't be in the game. I have seen tears in her eyes at times when she finished off the podium, or third instead of second.

ITs too bad about Gracie's SP. I was really happy to see her come back so strong in the FS.

I too don't like Satoko's jumps either. They are so small and her flip is awful, she is actually facing forward when she is leaving the ice and non of the tech callers ever seemed to call it. On top of that the judges give her +GOE's for them?

For me, the star of the free was clearly Gracie. What a redemption from her! Why couldn't she do that in SP. She often performed well in SP, but usually bombed in FS, so this was the most cleanest FS from Gracie this season. IMO, Gracie should've got the bronze medal and won the free instead of Radionova, 6th in FS and Liza without fierce respectively. :disapp:

It is a news to me that Radionova has strong, powerful and clean jumps. Her small jumps at Worlds were worse than before, and got a ! on her flip in a while and a underroation mark on his FS. Liza's FS showing was really disappointing compared to how great she was in SP. I obviously expected too much from her, but she may be too tired given her 13 competition trips. However, her first 3A landing with a superb quality in the A-level international competition was a good treat for me in the worst ladies' event ever.

Miyahara's jumps were not technically pleasing, but has a nice musicality and much better skating skills than the two Russians in the podium. Liza's higher PCS than Gracie's in FS is well, just a bonus for her SP by the judges. If I were the judge for the event, I would like to place Liza, still Miyahara, and Gracie because even though Miyahara was overscored, Gracie's SP and Radionova's FS scores were too generous as well than what actually they performed.

Ashley's redemption was on the hand, not as much impressive as Gracie's because she performed too cautious and tentative unlike her audacious and great showings at GPF, which I felt the most exciting one.

Re:Rika's Deductions

Here is a jumpamatron I made of the 2a-1lo-3s and the second lutz.

Salchow in combo called UR and Lutz called 'e'. I think she lost around 6-7pts or so in total on these jumps.

I made it kind of quick but you can go to 720p HD. It's a little fuzzy because I took a shortcut on the download. :slink:

Just think I can give you some idea about Satoko from all Japanese reports this week.
She's indeed a shy girl. She lived in Texas for three years since she was 4 due to her parents' work. She never spoke in kindergarten but just communicated with the others through body language. Her mom took her to get counseling but doctor didn't find anything unusual. It seemed like she wasn't willing to speak English in front of people back then. At her first figure skating performance, she stepped on the ice, skated to central part and started to cry. Her mom walked on the ice to console her but in vain so she didn't perform at the end. Such kid now can perform without nerves in front of crowd. Oh, and she spoke English in press conference this week without any problem.

Japanese press call her "demon of practice", "hard worker", "modest girl", "quiet (new) ace" coach Hamada said she practiced at least four times harder than the others. She won't stop training until the coach asked her to do so. (btw I think everyone knows Satoko is left-handed? if you're interested in it, go to the channel "Japan figure skating" on dailymotion to watch it. )
According to her coach, she's always modest and never show bad attitude to anyone even if she won Japanese title last year. Some reporters noticed the technical specialist is Shin Amano this time again so they asked some questions about 2013 JWC where she got 9 <. Satoko considered it as a humiliation. Her mom Yuko said she even had bad mood during school times back then. Then she started to read guideline book about jumping herself and hoped to improve her jumps little by little. With coach Hamada's and Satoko's hard work, I think it started to paid off. Regardless of height, her rotation on jumps this week were more clear and I see more distance on it. You can never compare her jumps to the others but just compare to herself. She is slowly and steadily improve them.

( I see most of people argue that she has no height on jumps. but hey, rotated them is more important, and I think judges are fair, she barely get good GOE on jumps. On the contrary, some skaters can jump high(does I need to point out who? I think not. ) but the lack of rotation is glaring AND you appreciate those more than Satoko's just because of height. see the point? I think everyone agrees Satoko's weak point is obviously height of jumps but you can't deny her marvelous skating skills, spins etc. just b/c the low jumps. I surely hope she can jump higher and I'm more sure she herself is working hard on it so let's wait and see. )

In January, she tore some ligament on right foot and could barely walk. She considered to withdraw from 4CC but then luckily she got the chance to see a doctor who helped Daisuke Takahashi went through knee problems during Sochi season. She still walked with pain before heading to Korea but she went through it and got silver. (this explains her unusual speed during 4CC)

Before NHK Trophy last year, her grandpa who always went to arena to support her passed away. That affected Satoko a lot but she said she just wanted to work even harder.

I hope this can help you picture Satoko a little bit better.

For me, I respect any kind of comment but not negative ones with nasty words. Comment before looking for more info and reading the ISU rule more carefully please or it just makes your comments annoying. I think most parts of figure skating are based on personable favor like expression, choreography, height on jumps or even height on skaters themselves but not matching your taste doesn't mean it's against the rule skaters are working hard to fill in. I see quite a few comments express the concepts like "Satoko is short. she's like a novice on the ice but why she get big score?" or "Satoko has no height on jumps so she can't win!" "She got big score b/c she's Japanese!" etc. I hope this post is seen as a balance. Thank you.

Thank you! I enjoyed reading your post about Satoko, and it makes me like her even more. I really do not get all this hate towards her, but I hope she wins more medals!!!

Maybe, when she had real chances to win gold. That's normal, but she ain't stupid and can do math. So Liza's winning was not a surprise for her, let alone dissaprovment. I believe she is very happy with her silver.
Frankly, this thing of analysing skaters facial expression and make a whole movie out of it (not saying this just for you) is becoming tiresome.

I am not really sensing the hate myself but I think people are critical of her jumps because not only are they low and borderline UR or UR without call like the one I showed in the 4cc video I made(pretty much 360 degrees rotated on the ice)...they aren't really worthy of any bullet points that I can think of and yet they continue to recieve positive GOE. I wish someone could please explain which bullets she is hitting to get even a +1 let alone the +2's.

On the bright side her overall skating is very nice and I'm not sure if she is as musical as she is delicate in movement but she does a good job interpretating her programs this season. I applaud her for her accomplishment and grabbing silver in her first WC. I certainly don't hate her but I don't think criticizing her jumps and some of the judges marks as hating her.

Welcome to GS fg0993 :) Your post was very informative and I welcome and encourage you to post more often. I really like learning stories about skaters like the ones you shared. I was very shy to the point of tears as a kid myself and now I'll just bulldoze right into a conversation and even thrive when performing in front of large crowds.

Hear, hear!

Before anyone makes personal stabs at skaters, we should not forget that each skater has his/her deep and unique personal experiences, background, personalities that we don't see, that feed into their skating that we do see. Thanks for your time and effort for gathering information from broader sources and for putting into words many of my similar thoughts.
