They have 3 people - a technical specialist, a controller, an assistant whatever who are judging levels. They call them during the performance and check them the minutes after while skaters take their bows, hug their coaches and agonize in the K & C. Theses 3 judges are experts so they make, discuss and finalize the call. Sure, in track and field there can be a "photo finish". It's checked within a minute or so of the finish and that's the winner. The coach of the loser doesn't come back and argue otherwise. I presume someone from Miner's team had to make that appeal because I doubt the judges routinely review all performances after the event is complete. I know this is a subjective sport but this is the stuff that turns me off. "Embarrassed" is a strong word and it implies that Ross did something wrong. I apologize for that. But I just don't like to see this kind of waffling in a sport that already has a reputation for shenanigans.

You're probably right ... it's doubtful the judges (or, more correctly the technical panel) routinely review all performances after the event is complete.

But, when the 'unofficial' final scores are as tight as they were in this case — just 2.5 points separating 2nd to 5th; and more notably, only 0.21 points between 3rd & 4th — I think it is very reasonable to assume that the technical panel DOES "review [some] of the performances after the event is complete". In fact, IMO an automatic 'mandatory review' should always occur whenever results are that close [...in reference to the 0.21 difference between 3rd & 4th place].

Unofficial Results
2 - Adian PITKEEV .......... 250.47
3 - Adam RIPPON ........... 248.63
4 - Ross MINER ............. 248.42 **
5 - Mikhail KOLYADA ....... 247.97

Official (Corrected) Results
2 - Adian PITKEEV .......... 250.47
3 - Ross MINER ............. 248.92 **
4 - Adam RIPPON .......... 248.63
5 - Mikhail KOLYADA ...... 247.97

The overall placement is correct. But 79 for PCS? Only 4 points behind Adam? What was his choreography exactrly? His spins were off center, woobly and slow. I don't agree with encouraging this . Looks like another Russian who jumps and not much more.

You obviously have never seen Pitkeev skate. He is as good as his PCS tell him to be. On the other hand Rippon has to be the most overrated skater in this forum. I've watched him several times and I've never understood the fawning of this skater. He seems to keep that same poker face all through his skate and most important of all I find him stiff and his movements jerky. He is nowhere near Farris, Brown and Abbott in artistry

OK I'm a Javi fan but there is no way he deserve a 10 for that performance. He look somewhat slow in the step sequence today. I still find his JO open performance the best. The only 10 I could give if ever is the transition score.

It was sad for Rippon to lose the bronze so narrowly, but he would not have made the GPF final anyway, I think. Congratulations to Miner for his bronze medal and great that the unfortunate mistake was noticed!

I liked Pitkeev´s skating and it is wonderful for the young man to win a silver medal on home ice!!!

WOW, Fernandez has especially fantastic programs this season and the judges seem to agree (choreography, interpretation but he still needs them to notice his transitions). Congratulations for the win at two GP events!!!

Does javier have the best skating skills, transitions, interpretation, etc? No. Is he a great jumper? Yes. He is entertaining and won worlds deservedly but I'm sorry giving him 10s in pcs is a joke.

So what kind of PCS would a skater of Javier's talents be getting without a quad? Is his mastery of the quad propping him up? Wouldn't it be interesting to take the top men in the world and say skate your programs at this event but NO quads allowed and see what would happen? ah, I can dream

Interesting idea, I want this to happen at some point. Lol. There will be less splatfest.

After the swapping that happened between Adam and Ross I suggest the bronze should have landed in Kolyada garden. He was amazing, and only paid a price for his novelty. I think that his LP was better than Adam's or Ross'. I would even squeeze Voronov somewhere on a better place...but I am not a judge. I don't really know why, but I liked the Russian skaters (Pitkev, Kolyada, Voronov), although I have no slavic background:scratch2:

Rewatching Pitkeev's performance, he has tremendous potential. I really like his commitment to artistry even though his jumps are his strength right now.

So NBC confirmed the scoring change for Ross was due to a computing error.

So NBC confirmed the scoring change for Ross was due to a computing error.

Question for you, Mrs. P:

I heard what Tanith said. But am scratching my head over her words, b/c what the ISU's own recap said is:

Miner’s score was changed and 0.50 points added when the Technical Panel changed the level for his flying change foot combination spin from three to four.

Is it me ... or is it a misnomer to refer to the change in level as a type of "computing error?" To me, "computing error" conjures up something like the software being programmed incorrectly.

Anyway, I'm glad the error was caught in time for Ross to earn the bronze. :)

Well computing could refer to bad calculations too. :)

But in any case we know now it was an error with the tech panel and not a result of a challenge on Ross' team part.

Agree that it is good to know that the panel corrected its error, and that Team Ross had not challenged.

[The level change is not what I would call a "calculation" error either ... but I won't belabor my head-scratching.)

By the way, I forgot to mention that after it already was known that Ross won the bronze, Adam's mother tweeted congratulations to both her son and Ross:

I am happy to take it as a good sign that both skaters/families are supportive of each other. (Not that you ever suggested otherwise, Mrs. P. Just making a general comment.)

I don't know if the comments from the press conference were noted here, but Ross had high praise for Adam's sportsmanship. They were standing together when the results were announced and they hugged.Adam congratulated Ross right away. Ross said that they have known each other since they were kids and that Adam has always shown respect towards his competitors.Ross said that he respected Adam so much for that.

Adam's mom is a good woman. It doesn't surprise me that she would tweet that.

As an aside, at FSIH, 2013, Ross and Adam hung out together at the event and also they did some NYC sight=seeing together.

Oh no, why do you say that? :sad21: Look at this beauty, you'll change your mind ;)

Thx for the comments from Ross at the Rostelecom presser. Very pleased to learn of them from you :).

But I hasten to add that I am not surprised by them. And I was/am not surprised by the tweet from Adam's mother.
The camaraderie and mutual respect among so many of the U.S. men -- Ross, Adam, Max, Josh, Jason, Richard, Jeremy, etc. -- is one of the reasons that I enjoy supporting them.

(Someone else earlier in this thread or another seemed to imply that the Rostelecom situation was certain to create bad blood btwn Ross and Adam. I posted Adam's mother's tweet because I did and do not agree with that assumption.)

I agree about the American men..add Grant to the list as well. In Kingston in 2010, Grant skated in the exhibition. He didn't have an ex costume. Adam's mom loaned him a sweater.

It seems like most of the skaters are friendly with their competition. After all, who knows better the work, devotion and sacrifices that skating calls for more than another skater!

Nam had the second highest TES of the night at 88, and the 3rd lowest PCS at 71.
I wonder if its possible to change either his SP or FP?
