Tokyo-2020 was impressive. I will re-watch it on TV upon return. Looked pectacular from the stands.

Although for Tokyo-2020 I feel like at this rate everyone will need A Galaxy S10 and Pokémon 3 Augmented reality edition enabled smart phones just to be able to go to the bathroom and get some sake. :)

I feel like Tokyo will be my fav olys ever:love:
btw Yana & Rita said that them being held in Japan will be 1 of the factors they want to stay in the sport

so, Russians add today 2 gold medals and assure 4th place (in golds and total). But Germans will not learn about this (at least the readers of BILD) because:
http://sport.bild.de/olympia/medaillenspiegel/
the question is: who is on 4th place ? :scratch2:
1 of our sports sites has a category with the gallery of our medalists that's titled 'Hello, 'Bild'!':laugh:

Gooodbye Rio. Hopefully South Am will have a chance to host again.

thanks guys for the Medal count tables.
Too bad China isnt 2nd.:( Rooted for them

my only concern is that Tokyo in the summer is the worst time of year. So humid and hot that it's difficult to breathe outside. They'll have to work out some genius solution so that athletes and spectators don't die of heat stroke. I'm sure they've got lot's of people working on the problem.

Total (87 NOCs)307307361975

Well, there weren’t many changes at the top on the final day. The USA added 5 medals, but even with China winning no more medals, it was not enough to reach double the tally of the country in second place.

I’ve already given the game away, but China won the battle with Great Britain over who would win the second highest tally of medals. Great Britain won a silver medal on the final day, to finish 3 medals behind China. However, in terms of Gold medals, GB won the battle with one more medal than China.

Russia and Germany retained their positions from yesterday, finishing 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and 5[SUP]th[/SUP] respectively in both tables.

France won a Gold and a Silver on the final day, which took them from one medal behind Japan yesterday to one medal ahead today. In fact, France finished on the same total number of medals as Germany: 42. It was the number of Gold medals that was France’s downfall. They had 7 fewer Gold medals than Germany, which meant they finished behind Germany in both tables. And 2 fewer Gold medals than Japan meant that they finished one place behind Japan in the Gold rankings.

At the start of this exercise, karne was criticising the Total medal table as a “fake table the Americans came up with to make themselves feel superior”. Well, I have a feeling she will be saying differently now, as Australia finished up 8[SUP]th[/SUP] in the “fake table” but only 10[SUP]th[/SUP] in the “real table”!

Italy finished in 9[SUP]th[/SUP] in both tables. They actually had the same number of Gold medals as Australia, so it was having 2 more Silvers that put them ahead in the Gold ranking. But, overall, the Italians won one less medal than the Aussies.

Canada benefitted greatly from ranking by Total medals. They jumped from 20[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Gold rankings to 10[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Total rankings. This was largely due to a considerable haul of Bronze medals (they were joint 6[SUP]th[/SUP] with Germany on the Bronze medal count!)

South Korea dropped from 8[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Gold rankings to 11[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Total rankings. They were one medal behind Canada with 21. The Netherlands and Brazil both finished 2 medals further back on 19 medals. But, unfortunately for the hosts, the Netherlands won one more Gold medal, which gave them the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] place.

New Zealand also benefitted in ranking by Total medals. Their 18 medals meant that they jumped from 19[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Gold rankings to 14[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Total medals.

The biggest beneficiary from ranking by Total medals, though, was Azerbaijan. They also won 18 medals, but only one of them was Gold. So, whereas they were 39[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Gold ranking, they finished 15[SUP]th[/SUP] in the Total ranking.

Spain made a last minute charge up the table on the final day. They won a Silver and 3 Bronze medals yesterday, which meant that they jumped from 18[SUP]th[/SUP] yesterday to 16[SUP]th[/SUP] today. On the other hand, they were the country that lost out to New Zealand and Azerbaijan with the switch from the Gold rankings to the Total rankings.

On the same Total number of medals as Spain was Kazakhstan. But, due to having fewer Gold medals, they finished behind in 17[SUP]th[/SUP].

Hungary and Denmark both finished with 15 medals. But, because Hungary won 8 Gold medals and Denmark won 2 Gold medals, the Hungarians got the nod for 18[SUP]th[/SUP] position. On the other hand, the Danes will be happier than the Hungarians, because Hungary had dropped 6 places compared to the Gold rankings, whereas Denmark had climbed 9 places compared to the Gold rankings!

Rounding off the Top 20 was Kenya with 13 medals. I have to be honest, given how you always thing of Kenyans when you think of runners, I was expecting Kenya to finish a lot higher in the Total medal table. Like, to put things into perspective, they won the same number of medals overall as Uzbekistan.

As I want to get this table up as soon as possible, the rest of my analysis will be in a separate post.

Thank you all for this great coverage! :agree:
IMO, It's been so funny that we had the opportunity to talk about something completely different from FS (in a period poor in skating).

Rio has been amazing. Now I understand Brazilians who feel the saudade about their country. I already miss it!!

The 1956 Melbourne games were held end November/start December, so true Australian summer. I guess they'll figure it out.

If not, maybe Tokyo can hold a September games like we did for Sydney.

Nope. Still a fake table. We were tenth on the real table because that's exactly where we deserved to be, no higher. ;)

I recorded the closing ceremony, will watch it later today after getting home from work.
How sad is it that I am more interested in the Tokyo2020 presentation part?

Ach, come on now. If I can be happy for your country getting a higher position by counting total medals, why can't you?

As I keep saying, winning Gold isn't everything. Winning any medal is a great achievement. And as long as the athlete achieves their personal goals (assuming they are realistic goals, of course!) – be it Gold, Podium, Top 5, Top 10, Top 15, Top 20, Top 30, World Record, Olympic Record, National Record, PB Score, SB Score, etc. – then we should all be happy for them.

Getting back to my analysis.

As I have been talking about the Women’s Golf over the past few days, I suppose I should update you on how the golfers I have been featuring finished up.

Northern Ireland golfer Stephanie Meadow finished in joint 31[SUP]st[/SUP] position. Fellow Ulsterwoman (but from South of the border) Leonie Maguire finished in joint 21[SUP]st[/SUP] position. Amongst the 3 golfers Maguire was level with was Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela. So, this meant that they both finished as top amateur.

The remaining amateur, Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan, finished in 37[SUP]th[/SUP] position.

So, here is a summary of how the countries I was keeping an eye out for finished:

Country
MedalsSportEventName
Southern Ireland2 Silver MedalsRowingMen’s Lightweight Double ScullsGary and Paul O'Donovan
SailingLaser RadialAnnalise Murphy
Isle Of Man1 Silver Medal (for Team GB)CyclingMen’s OmniumMark Cavendish
Northern Ireland1 Bronze Medal (for Team GB)DivingMen’s Synchronized 10 Metre PlatformDaniel Goodfellow (with England’s Tom Daley)
Cyprus0 Medals
Hong Kong0 Medals

Within Team GB, the medal haul was as follows:

Country
GoldSilverBronzeTotal
Scotland4
7213
Wales46010
Channel Islands1
Isle Of Man0101
Northern Ireland0011

One of the Gold medals came in the Women’s Team Pursuit event that included a Scottish cyclist (Katie Archibald) and a Welsh cyclist (Elinor Barker). So, the medal is included for both countries.

One of the Silver medals came in the Double Skulls event where a Scottish rower (Katherine Grainger) was partnered by a Welsh rower (Victoria Thornley). So, the medal is included for both countries.

One of the Silver medals came in the inaugural Rugby 7’s tournament, where the team included 2 Scottish players (Mark Bennett and Mark Robertson) and 2 Welsh players (James Davies and Sam Cross). The medal is included once for each country.

One of the Silver medals came in the Women's Eight, where the team included 2 rowers from Scotland (Polly Swann and Karen Bennett). The medal is included once for Scotland.

An all-Scottish team of swimmers won the Silver medal the Men’s 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay. So, it is counted as 1 medal rather than 4.

As well as his individual Silver medal in the Men’s Sprint, Scottish cyclist Callum Skinner won a Gold medal in the Men’s Team Sprint with 2 English riders.

Between them, 17 Scottish athletes won 13 medals (the difference is in effect due to taking away 1 rugby player, 1 rower and 3 swimmers, and adding in 1 cyclist).

Between them, 10 Welsh athletes won 10 medals (Jazz Carlin won Silver medals in 2 swimming races, so that balances out the Silver medal that was shared by the 2 Rugby players).

For the Channel Islands, I couldn’t find a specific story summarising how their athletes got on in Rio. All I knew for definite was that Guernsey’s Heather Watson didn’t get a medal in tennis. However, I did find a story about Carl Hester from Sark winning a Silver medal in the Team Dressage with 3 English riders.

Because the Channel Islands may have won other medals I do not know about, I have left the other boxes empty. I have also put them above the Isle of Man, both as a precaution in case they do have more medals, and because I know they both have 1 Silver, and the Channel Islands come first alphabetically.

For Northern Ireland, the Bronze medal came in the Men’s Synchronized 10 Metre Platform where a Northern Irish diver (Daniel Goodfellow) was partnered by an English diver (Tom Daley).

Unfortunately, that is as far as I can take this analysis. I was not able to find stories specifically about how many medals were won by athletes from England, or from any of the Overseas Dependencies.

Additionally, the stories I did find (Scotland, Wales) were only about athletes who won medals for Team GB. There may have been athletes that had emigrated and were competing for other countries that won medals but were not included in these stories.

After all, four of the Gold medals won by athletes from Northern Ireland in the past were won while they were representing Canada.

Unfortunately, the Northern Ireland athletes did not bring home any Gold medals from Rio. However, the last time somebody from here did win Gold in the Summer Olympics was in Barcelona 1992, so we’re used to it by now.

We normally do better in the Paralympics. Three of our athletes won Gold Medals in London 2012, and all three of them will be competing in Rio. However, the three of them are competing under different circumstances this time.

Firstly, Bethany Firth has switched from Ireland to Great Britain. Basically, she realised that if she wanted to improve further, she needed more specialist coaching than she was getting in the Irish team.

Secondly, Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop (who are both still with Team Ireland) are each only able to compete in one of the events they won in London. For Jason, the 200m race for T13 runners has been dropped. And for Michael, the 800m race for T37 runners has been dropped.

All the best for the Paralympics!

LOL, b/c everyone is entitled to her/his own point of view, of course.

My POV happens to be that I ignore your tables  (as well as the other tables) -- because I agree with the part of your post that I have quoted.

(Although I am happy for any athlete from any country to win any medal, I do not pay attention to country-by-country medal counts.)

Congratulations to all the Rio athletes. And to the Paralympians who are about to start competing.
