Just noticed that...under what situation that a skater would get 9 pts deduction?

Fell 5 times? The more times you fall the more the deduction is I believe. You get 2 falls with -1, but the 3rd and 4th fall are -2 and anything further is -3. Unless that rule changed or something. Boyang got -9 in worlds 2018 fs, so I guess something like that.

I gave this competition some half-hearted attention.

I have no idea what to make of those protocols.

I watched Yuma Kagiyama performance, since @figureskatingandrainbows kindly posted a link. Not great, but also not awful. That ending music seems too big for him, but if he's skating well, I can see how I'd view that differently.
