I have to say that I hate the 2 per country rule. I can't believe Whitlock and Kato aren't going to the AA final...

Just an FYI, USA Gymnastics is live streaming the qualifications on their YouTube channel. In about 3 hours, the qualification group with the female US team will begin.

For men, I'll be rooting for Uchimura in the AA and Zonderland :)love::love::love:) on the HB. I'm sad Hambuchen didn't qualify for the HB final.

For women, I'll be rooting for Mustafina and Iordache. I've also really come to enjoy MyKayla Skinner's gymnastics so I hope she does well. And Lauren Mitchell and Vanessa Ferrari.

This year is quite interesting! new stars are emerging, the "veterans" better keep up!

also I do feel sad that they weren't able to be part of AA final, but hey rules are rules maybe b/c I actually don't mind the 2 per country rule...

Biles is currently leading the AA with the first spot on beam, floor, and vault. What a beast. Just UB to go.

Here's the complete list of the qualification results
http://www.fig-docs.com/live_results/5529/5529.php

I'm very interested to see how the MAG team final turns out tomorrow. I'm a Team Japan fan so I really hope they manage to hit their routines and finally win a gold medal after 10 years since the Athens Olympics. Technically, this team has everything it needs to win because it has extremely valuable gymnasts but somehow they were not that good in the qualifications. I personally expected Shogo Nonomura to do much better than this, and Kohei Kameyama to qualify in the pommel horse final but I was surprised to see it didn't go as planned. I was also surprised to see Kohei Uchimura missing the floor final. His only event final is horizontal bar.

As for the WAG team final there is no doubt USA will win and the podium will most likely consist of USA - China - Russia. As a Romanian, it pains me to see my country barely qualifying 7th but Diana Bulimar's absence is greatly affecting this young team. Like the MAG Japanese team, Romania's last team gold was at the Athens Olympics. Kudos to Larisa Iordache for pushing everyone with incredible routines. She qualified 3rd in the AA final and 2nd in the floor and balance beam finals.

Iordache, whether I like it or not, can totally close the gap between her in Biles in EF (maybe even in the AA though I doubt it). The rest of the girls on that team are dead weight, with the possible exception of Munteanu

I think for now just keeping her current form would be great. She was as good in last year's qualifications but failed to medal in the AA and BB finals.

And I agree, Andreea Munteanu can score a 14,900 on beam if she hits her elements. Unfortunately that was not the case today.

I was nervous watching qualifications yesterday for Romania! Iordache downgraded her BB routine from a BHS-layout full to a BHS-layout probably just to play it safe. If she hits her full routine (even with Biles and Mustafina hitting) she will easily win gold there. Disappointed Munteanu didn't make the final.

Biles' only sure golds are in the TF, AA, and FX. On vault, there was less than a tenth of a point separating her from Hong and Skinner. MyKayla I think is the biggest surprise of these championships for the ladies. The judges really seem to like her since her international scores are actually much higher than her domestic ones.

For men, I can see China winning the team competition (again) with Kohei in the AA. Nice to see Berki qualifying into PH unlike last year. Zanetti I think will win the rings competition. He always downgrades his routine in qualifications so he gets a shot of going last in the finals. Vault should go to Yang and HB to Zonderland.

--Just finished watching the Men's Team AA. What a fight between China and Japan. That last high bar routine by China was soo amazing.

Now, here's my question. 0.10 points separated gold from silver, and when interviewed, many members of team Japan seemed genuinely to feel that they should have won. I'm not knowledgeable enough about gymnastics scoring to make an accurate evaluation, but what do you think about the scores of Japan and China? Were they fair?

For instance, I thought Kato's High bar routine was scored very harshly in the E score.

There are many controversies going on right now regarding the judging. Zhang got a 15,1 score in qualifications on high bar and an unexpected 15,9 in the final. While many gymnasts do upgrade their difficulty scores for the final routine, 0,8 is still a huge difference. Both teams made mistakes but I feel like China was overscored while Japan was underscored - not to mention there were 2 inquiries made by Kato and Tanaka who got accepted and eventually changed the results.

Everyone thought they had the gold - including themselves, so it was tough to see their disappointed faces.

The majority of people on Twitter thought the Japanese deserved to win. And yes, the upgrade from 15.1 to 15.9 was so massive that even I'm a bit skeptical about that score. I agree with ioanap, massive underscoring for the Japanese. I hope Zhang will be scored correctly in the HB final; I couldn't fathom him winning gold over a more impressive routine by Zonderland. Congratulations to the US though! Very well-deserved bronze medal. It was an exciting men's final indeed!

Alright...this sport is a bit foreign to me but I've been lurking this thread. Are there any videos from the event to post? I'd like to put a face to what you are all talking about. Thx.

It will probably be on youtube shortly, I'll post when I find the link.

My family and I were all watching last night...and I think the hardest part was seeing the faces of Team Japan. They KNEW they did a good job, and in their minds, they just couldn't see how they could lose. So their disappointment was not "We should have done better" but more of "We should have won".
There were some quite big mistakes from Team China and small mistakes from Team Japan, in a sport that is supposed to punish mistakes and reward perfection, Japan should have been ahead. JMO.

EDIT: Here is the link to the opening and the MAG Team Final

Zhang's score made sense. It was much cleaner than in qualifying. However, it was really disconcerting to see the Japanese win with two falls. They won by having huge rings and p-bars scores and an amazing high bar specialist. Goes to show that the sport doesn't exactly support being balanced across all events (which Japan was).

Also the US really underperformed in the first half. Whittenburg could have squeezed so much more out of his vault and parallel bars, I feel. The team as a whole maybe could have gotten within one point of Japan/China, though Gold is a far reach.

Gymnastics is actually pretty good at punishing mistakes. We saw a LOT of low to mid 14's for guys who could have easily been in the 15s. The only thing the sport is bad at is differentiating between pretty good gymnasts and amazing gymnasts, especially on events like vault. Either way, it's still way better at punishing athletes than figuring skating.

I believe you mean Chinese. :)

And yes, I think that's been such a huge issue for the sport. For instance in 2008, Nastia won the AA even though she was pitiful on the vault and below mediocre on the floor, but had monster scores on the BB and UB. Anna Pavlova got better scores on 3 events (VT, BB, FX) than the bronze medalist, who again had a monster UB score. Luckily it hasn't been an issue for men because Kohei is that good.

And similar to Romania who has excellent scores on all 3 events, but is measly on the UB.

I guess this is for anyone who's lurking/new in this thread

I'm a bit busy but here's a mini-intro of some of the headlining WAG athletes who's competing right now in China.

Simone Biles
Known for her difficult jumping passes in floors and explosive power in vault, she is heralded to be the All Around world champion again this year. She is also leading in beam; however, this might change soon as some of her competitors do upgrade their technical difficulty (D-score) in the finals. Her only weak event is the uneven bars. She is also criticized of her lack of "artistry" but heck, her energy and liveliness makes up for it!

Floor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr61mrLUB64&list=UUAM9Pvp3HzKvIAbAXHxidow
Vault: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeWSOCHAMK8&list=UUAM9Pvp3HzKvIAbAXHxidow

Kyla Ross
Kyla is known for her amazing artistry and consistency among gymnastics fans. Although she continues to be successful, the lack of upgrading her technical difficulty drives those fan crazy. At this moment, she is experiencing a leg inujury. However, she is doing quite well due to her high execution scores (E-score). She is mostly known for her great execution on the beam apparatus.

Beam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL1jBin-YjA (from 2013 Worlds - I can't access her 2014 due to it being geoblocked)

Aliya Mustafina
AKA The Russian Queen of Gymnastics (well entitled by me and in this quad...I won't talk about the past)
She is known for her unrivaled lines and artistry throughout almost all of the events. At this moment, she is finishing her recovery from an injury. Her D-scores were a bit low in each event the qualifications but she is known for her iron mentality and upgrading her difficulty in the every event finals minus the vault. Quite a sly fox so watch out!

Uneven Bars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0bVaQv7trY&list=UUAM9Pvp3HzKvIAbAXHxidow
- even though this is an "easy" layout for her, her E-score is unmatched (it's even the highest out of everyone)
Floor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmZUuGKBgGc&index=59&list=UUAM9Pvp3HzKvIAbAXHxidow
- not her best program, but her lines are amazing!!

Larisa Iordache
She's probably the only person that can outdo Biles on the beam at this moment. Initially shadowed by her own teammate, Diana, but due to her injury, Larisa is shining more than ever. A bit inconsistent but her floor and beam execution are top-notch when on.

Beam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kyhfhci3KU
- will probably unleash this in the beam finals
Floor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09NyKscPMKI
- honestly prefer this than Biles'
- very fluid and energetic!

Yao Jinnan
One of the reasons why I started watching gymnastics more this year (yes I casually started in 2012...when my newlyfound faves retired)

Yao is probably the best uneven bars worker in the world....when she hits it! She has exceptional lines and airy passes on the uneven bars. Her second best event would be the beam. Other than that, her scores for the other apparatus aren't as high when compared with UB. But hey, don't leave her out yet as she is also known for her fighting spirit!

Uneven Bars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf0haE5gvns
- this is really amazing, I have no words
Beam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahS-PSShYKM
- low scores here probably because trying to conserve energy for Worlds

Honorable Mentions:
- Mckayla Maroney - US vault queen but is currently recovering
- Huang Huidan - Another amazing UB worker; on-par with Yao
- Mykayla Skinner - an amazing vaulter; pretty good in all events
- Viktoria Komova - one of the best Russian gymnasts at this quad but is still recovering
- Hong Un Jong - will try to vault a TRIPLE TWIST YURCHENKO (WAG's hardest vault?)
- Diana Bulimar - the ace of Team Romania; currently injured
- Vanessa Ferrari - an amazing Italian gymnast; known for longetivity in the sport and amzing floor programs

Anyone care to do a mini intro for the men's discipline?

Also, I found this website as an amazing resource on who's competing: http://thegymter.net/
If you want to see more gymnastics vids: http://www.youtube.com/user/figchannel
the USA Gymnastics Team is also posting live videos but I can't access them due to them being geoblocked: http://www.usagymworlds.com/live/

ps. my fave WAG teams are Russia and China and my fave events are UB and beam! I tried to not let my bias-ness for them seep throughout this post.

I wish I could make one for MAG but I have a very limited knowledge about the men! So far, the ones I mostly know (or heard about) are Ichimura (YEEEEAH THE KIINNNG), Kenzo Shirai, Sam Mikulak, Max Whitlock, Denis Abliazin, and Yang Hak Seon. Most of them are vaulters and floor specialists. I dont even know who's in Team China!

edit: fine but I'll make it later. Also to anyone who knows whats up in MAG, feel free to write it!
