I'm not referring to sibling pairs that compete as a team like the Shibs or the Reeds, but siblings like Michelle and Karen Kwan, Gracie and Carly Gold, Sarah and Emily Hughes, or Max and Madeline Aaron. Odd that it's mostly sisters, do we know any brothers that skate and compete with each other?

I knew that Karen Kwan was a competitive figure skater, but I never saw her programs before yesterday when TSL posted a video and for her birthday. Karen had some lovely qualities but would never be able to be competitive on a level with Michelle.

Are there certain qualities you like about one skater that you wish their sibling had? For instance, Karen had a lovely layback position that was nicer than Michelle's IMO but clearly her jumps were not as good or difficult.

Madeline Aaron, being a ballet dancer, has lovely posture on the ice, and it looks like Max is trying to emulate that with his new programs.

I actually preferred Emily's skating to Sarah's but she never ranked as high nor won an OGM.

Who are your favorites and what qualities do you like or dislike about each?

Yes, in the Czech Republic there are two junior brothers who compete, Jiri and Matyas Behloradsky. Also from CR are of course Michal Brezina and his sister Eliska. And there are brothers from Great Britain, Nicholas and Joseph Buckland (both ice dancers), and another set of brothers in singles who are coached by their dad...Graham and Jack Newberry. Similar situation with Alexander Majorov and his brother Nikolai (I think Nikolai is still a novice, though?).

In Russia I know of Artem and Sergei Borodulin, but I don't know if they competed against each other.

Since you asked for favorites...I never really thought about it, but I'll go with the Helgesson sisters. They won me over at the Euros.

Australia has the multiple Dodds siblings.
Also the Kerry siblings.
I hope one of our Aussie GS members will tell us more about these families.

Finland has the multiple Papp siblings.

(BTW, re the Aarons: the oldest sib Molly also competed -- in pairs. Now retired.)

Allisa and Amber Czisny. Allisa's twin (not identical) sister Amber pretty much kept pace with Allisa until a series of injuries forced her to the sideline prematurely. She briefly thought about ice dance, but did not continue. In 2004, Allisa (gold) and Amber (bronze) ruled the podium at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, representing Bowling Green University.

Amber Czisny-Roy now teaches ballet, Pliates, flexibility, etc. at the Dance Academy of the Detroit Skating Club.

Picture: This is not Allisa. :)

Mai Asada. She did not have the jumps but her skating was very fluid and musical.

Jimmy and David Santee were competitors back in the 70's and 80's. David was more successful as I recall. He won silver at one world championships behind Scott. I think both are coaching now. I think Jimmy was with Disney on Ice as both a skater and coach.

Of course there were the Jenkins brothers, Hayes Alan and David, who each won four world championships and an Olympic gold medal.

The Gilles siblings. Alexe did singles, Piper still does ice dance (they are actually twins even though Alexe is so much taller), and I believe their brother Paul did ice dance for awhile as well. And they do skate together but Michael and Rachel Parsons haven't been mentioned yet.

)

You called? ;)

Dodds brothers: four. Oldest to youngest: Matthew, Andrew, Jordan, Ryan. If you pay attention to JGP/Senior Bs/4CCs, you have likely seen the three older brothers already (Andrew was one of the only two men who were cruelly cut at 4CCs this year). Until recently, Matthew, Jordan and Ryan all double-dipped as pair skaters, but there was some talk on the Australian skaters thread that Jordan and Eliza had split (I hope not true). Matthew, Andrew and Jordan are all Seniors - Andrew was the bronze medallist at Australian Nationals this season just gone - and Ryan is a Junior. Ryan also jumps clockwise; the other three all jump counter-clockwise.

And they are always impeccably dressed  Alas, their only flaw is that they are Queenslanders. ;)

Kerrys: Brendan and Chantelle. He, of course, is the quad-armed, beautifully-deep-knee'd, funny guy who made everyone on GS sit up and take notice with his goofing around after the SP at 4CCs this year. His younger sister is a beautiful, elegant, eloquent skater with fantastic spins. (What is it about Australian girls and spins?) I believe she was injured this season, but I am not sure.

IIRC, former pairs champ John Baldwin had brothers who also competed at US Nats.

One of the oddest cases of brothers competing against each other are Daniel Samohin who camenup through the American system and currently competes for Israel, and is coached by his parents at Lake Arrowhead.
http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00034509.htm

and his older brother Stanislav Samohin, who came up through the Russian system and was coached by Eteri Tutberidze, and is now coached by his parents and now also skates for Israel

And then there are Chris, Cathy, and Allison Reed, all ice dancers.

Isabella and Anastasia Cannuscio competed against each other in dance.

And interesting that per Stasia/Colin's bio, his off-ice partner is Bella.

Thx, karne . Knew that you could/would give us the full scoop.

Off topic: What is a resident of New South Wales called?

There are so many Gilles...Todd sounds right though.

LOL, maybe you had "Paul" on the brain b/c Paul Poirier is Piper's partner.

Well, it depends on the context. Generally, a New South Welshman, or you would say "from NSW". In a sporting context, a Blue, or if a Queenslander is mocking them, a Cockroach. (Queenslanders are Maroons, or Cane Toads.)

Due to the fact that I recently started a thread about his skating partner, the first names that popped into my head when I saw this thread were Estonian Pairs skater Ilja Glebov and his Singles skating sister Elena Glebova.

melissa_ire will be proud of me! ;)

Oh, don't you just love provincial rivalries!

Getting back on topic, I'm surprised you missed a set of Blues siblings that competed in Pairs: Elizabeth and Peter Cain. Peter, of course, is now more famous for being a Technical Specialist at competitions... and for being Ashley Cain's Dad! Here is their 1980 Olympics SP (I take it the costumes are not coincidence...!) This is the only video I have seen of them and, I have to be honest, I thought Elizabeth looked a lot more natural on the ice than Peter.

The Buckland brothers and the Newberry brothers have already been mentioned. But here are some more siblings from the British ranks.

Sinead and John Kerr

Amazed nobody mentioned the Scottish-Irish Ice Dancers yet! I absolutely loved them!!! Such a shame injuries forced them to retire, as they were skating the best they had ever done. They were becoming genuine contenders for medals at every competition they entered.

Vanessa and Melyssa James

OK, so Vanessa is competing for France now. But, with their family being from Bermuda, the James twins were eligible to compete in the British Championships. Vanessa was the 2006 British Ladies Champion (Jenna McCorkell was injured). After finishing off their Singles careers, the twins went down separate routes - Vanessa into Pairs, and Melyssa into Ice Dance. We are all familiar with how Vanessa skates in Pairs. The last competitive videos I can find of Melyssa are from 2009: Skate Wilmington CD, British Championships OD, Challenge Cup FD (no sound!).

Jennifer and John Nicks

Dominated British Pairs skating in the late forties / early fifties. With it being so long ago, there aren't many videos of them - I have only ever seen one (1951 Europeans), and you can't really form a proper opinion from it. John went on to become a VERY successful and famous coach, while Jennifer died relatively young.

Candice and Phillipa Towler-Green

Dianne Towler's twin daughters. Followed their mother into Ice Dance, but were not quite as successful on the international stage (4 times a World Champion is a hard act to follow!) That said, Phillipa and her skating partner, Phillip Poole, were regular runners-up to the Kerrs in British Championships. Have to admit, I hadn't heard tell of the twins until I went looking at lists of British skaters there now (they were competing at a time when I didn't pay any attention to Ice Dance). There are lots of videos of Phillipa on YouTube (e.g. here are her CD and Personal Best FD, both from 2008 Europeans; and her 2009 Finlandia OD), but only one video (a Gala from 2005) of Candice. So, it is hard to compare them. But, here is a video from 2010 with both of them in it! (I have no idea who is who! )

Does anybody know if former Pairs skater (now triathlete) Sarah Kemp is related to current Pairs skater Stacey Kemp?

Can't think of any local siblings, unfortunately.
