Sometimes in-place choreography is necessary to showcase the character of certain genres of music/dance; tap, hip-hop, latin, flamenco are examples. Virtue/Moir have opened their programs with some captivating in-place dance moves including in their 2011 Latin FD and their iconic 2017 Prince SD. As well, in-place choreography continues the program while giving the skaters a breathing point. When recalling Carolina Kostner's Bolero, I often remember her body rolling movement, which is well timed to the music and within the program, done after the final jump combo and gets the crowd going before performing her step sequence.
