The lady was doing face readings. Akiko: She has a traditional Japanese otafuku face which means she is gives happiness to people. Her forehead indicates her activities will extend beyond FS. If her freckle moves to the center she will achieve even more success. Nobu: Thick eyebrows-will live a long time. Eyes-not practical, crybaby (who knew?), easily deceived, suited for teaching. Nose-out proportion and needs to widen for financial security. Large lips-suited for speaking so FS coach a good fit.

Just saw Hongo Rika's Skate Canada performances and she just instantly caught my attention. For me personally, she is like the second coming of Shizuka. I can see that same grace and effortless-ness in her skating...and with some polishing she could be exquisite. Seriously, the resemblance to Shizuka down to her jump landings and spin technique is quite uncanny, although she also possesses the dynamism of Asada. Can't wait to see where she is in 4 years.

Yay for Team Japan Men! With Tatsuki winning Skate America and Takahito winning Skate Canada, I can only hope Yuzuru will win Cup of China to make it Team Japan 3/3 for the men.

I'm so glad to know Rika's attracted your attention at the recent Skaet Canada, unite.

Your diagnosis is just correct, I would say ;), since her coach Nagakubo-san is the one who taught Shizuka and Takeshi (Honda) those textbook jumps and all necessary basics on figure skating back in the days when they were just kids. You will see much younger Nagakubo-san in the Kiss & Cry:
-16yo Shizuka at 1998 Nagano OG http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4fFzm8Iics
-16 yo Takeshi at 1997 NHK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2aSAGXZBpk

He took 4 skaters of his to the Nagano Olympic Games in 1998, actually; Shizuka, Takeshi, Yamato Tamura and Marie Arai. Juuust impressive, isn't it? Nagakubo-san is the best jump coach in Japan, I think.

I noticed Rika at the Nationals 2012-13 season for the first time, while she still competed on the junior circuit but was able to compete at the Sr Nats as the JSF's reward by placing 3rd at Jr Nats. Her huge jumps (as a junior) and dynamic FP performance to Black Swan took me by surprise! She placed 6th SP, 4th FP and 5th overall at her first showing at Sr Nats. http://www.jsfresults.com/National/2012-2013/fs_j/national/data0290.htm

I've read somewhere that Akiko helps Rika on her presentation to Carmen this season. A good call. I can see some of Akiko's shadow in her fierce expression on Carmen. ;) Looking forward to seeing how Rika can make this program matured and as her own (not Akiko's take) as the season deepens. The Nats will be very exciting battle among Phantom (Kanako), Kim (Ms Saigon/Satoko), Carmen (Rika) and Giselle (Haruka). Gooo girls!

Though Oda has retired last year, its been great to hear his voice as commentator for the GP series.
He's doing a really good job. He clearly explains the quality of spins, jumps and other elements and seems to be enjoying himself.

I'm delighted to hear that Oda is doing well! I miss his skating so much. Zayak or not, he definitely made his mark on the sport in other ways.

Speaking of which, does he explain Zayaks well?

I don't remember hearing him comment on them yet. I'm sure he feels the skater's pain and embarrassment when it happens.

I'm curious what his comments are re Yuzuru's FS in COC. Can you please tell us (just the main points not word for word)? Thanks!

He went off to cry I think. I'll have to watch it again to see if he said anything. There was another commentator there or maybe two. -But they were all crying.

Thanks for the background information, deedee1. Did Akiko get her jumps from her former coach or Mr Nagabuko? She's not a power jumper per se but she didn't have problems with UR or wrong edges, did she? I recently rewatched her performances in 2007, when she was already 22 and noticed that her skating skills had improved so much by 2012. Mr Nagabuko is such a great technical coach.
