Can anyone enlighten me as to why Tarasova/Morozov and Cain-Gribble/ Leduc are in the first group?

The whole starting order is confusing. Is it random?

FYI to anyone who's subscribing to the stream and who doesn't usually arrive 15 minutes early, the start time for the event is listed at 14:45, but the stated start time for T/M is 14:36; and for C-G/L 14:42.

Skylark, did you subscribe? I’m on the fence as to whether to do so. I may wait until Pairs begins (it’s the first event, as far as I can tell) to see
if, um, “alternatives” appear :)

I'm with you. Totally on the fence. I wonder, if there are no "alternatives," will it be possible to see individual videos on utube later? I'm thinking probably not, thus, I'll probably subscribe. Maybe wait till during T/M's SP and then be ready for C-G/L. Tho' that may be cutting it too short. :drama:

I am actually hoping pairs watchers will post some remarks about the skates, the costumes and the overal performances here. I truly wanted to buy the stream but as there is no 'on demand' and the whole pairs competition is during working hours - and I might get away with watching one pair without feeling guilty but no more - I decided not to go for it at all. And I've a meeting with my board into the bargain during the latter half of the pairs SP! I have the distinct feeling they will not be understanding. Which wouldn't even be an issue if there was an on demand option. So please, please, post those tidbits! I'm interested in all pairs in any case. XX

If I'm able to watch it, I'll try to post details. I hope some folks will join me, though, because I'm philosophically opposed to multi-tasking .... also I'm not especially good at it. That's your warning, I guess, dear ladyjane. 00

I'll say it again, I don't like 'Falling' for J/R, and I wish they would change it. I don't think it's too late to try and find something more upbeat and unique. I wanna see what Shae Lynn Bourne or Marie-France Dubreuil would do for them. I thought their previous sp was okay. At least, I enjoyed the lyrics. The new sp maybe is a bit less melancholy. But honestly, both current sp and fp have a similar feel. They need to change-up their fp for more of a contrast, and to nix 'falling' in the lyrics!

Of course, I have absolutely no say in their choices. Good luck to all the teams for doing their best at this event!

I agree. I find both choices underwhelming, much more reminiscent of something Eric and Meagan—and other Canadian pairs, past & present—would have used than anything we might have seen from Vanessa and Morgan. Of course, they didn’t ask my opinion either :)

Exactly. I mean, if this is their one-shot competitive season, they should be open to honest, supportive feedback, and seriously rethink some things. Julie is a good choreographer, but what she does isn't always right for every team. The sp is okay in terms of choreo and its laidback, subdued feel with some unique movement touches here and there, as choreographed by Guillaume Cizeron, reportedly. It's not that exciting, but it's okay. I would imagine that Guillaume didn't have a lot of time to spend with them, as he's still a competitor himself. So maybe his input was more collaborative?

In any case, the fp is way too similar to the sp. The fp is apparently Julie's choreo. In my opinion, J/R don't have time to waste being safe and bland in this one-competitive-shot season. They should have been willing from the beginning to consider a lot of different music genres and ideas, and to try a variety of approaches, and then rework and be flexible to throwing something out and trying another direction(s) to discover what would really work, if they are truly interested in making an impact in a one-and-done Olympic season. Both Vanessa and Eric need to stretch themselves in different ways for this partnership to work, especially in one competitive season. If they are okay with it not working that well, because they are looking toward a show career more-so, then alright. But I was so excited to see something special from them...

But yep, I doubt J/R and their team are perusing fan forums to notice and to take my advice. LOL!

ETA:
Another thing I intended to mention constructively, mind you, is about the costuming. The colors for Vanessa are too similar. Subdued shades of blue. She needs something jewel-toned and brighter for at least one of the programs. And the sp outfit, while nicely styled, appears too dark against her skin, in concert with the white ice backdrop and the lighting in the arenas, at least so far.

Meanwhile, my earlier critique about how V has let her hair grow out, is simply because I think she absolutely rocked her earlier edgy short haircuts. Even on BOTB, she had rockin' short styles (albeit contestants have help with hair, makeup and costuming on BOTB). Thinking about it a bit more, I realize that V's hairstylist who used to cut her hair probably lives in France, and that could be why Vanessa has let her hair grow out. She maybe hasn't found another hairstylist/ hair pro she trusts yet to cut her hair, where she lives in Canada.

Bummed about the event charging so much overall, but then failing to offer on-demand streaming! Because there are a lot of top skaters participating, I decided to go for it this time and try to work my schedule around each live Finlandia stream, but I'm definitely not happy about this. I don't plan to be pulled into paying out anymore money this season. I have the Peacock subscription, and I paid for a couple of other early streaming events this season, but that's it for me. Everything for every sport these days costs way too much. I already don't watch tennis or baseball or the Olympics the way I used to because I refuse to be constantly squeezed financially for every this, that and the other. I can't afford it.

I don't know what I'm going to have to do in order to see all of the figure skating events at the Olympics next year. In 2018, I paid for YouTube TV in order to gain access to complete figure skating coverage. But YouTube TV was reasonably-priced four years ago. Now, it costs a whole bunch of body parts, not just an arm and a leg!

Not to make this only about J/R. I had just hoped to see them bring excitement on the ice, and not just the earlier excitement buzz. I do think that maybe they didn't anticipate some of the harsh negativity toward their partnership that's been floating around, unfairly. That kind of shizz can knock anyone off their stride. But anyway, good luck to J/R for a better event.

I'm eager to see how the U.S. teams will fare. I always love seeing Calalang/Johnson. They always shine with their costumes. And I like that they are bringing back their last season's fp, with their fun and edgy sp this season to rock music. I have liked what I've seen of Ash/TIm's costumes this season, except I wish they would have kept their streamlined black jumpsuits we saw in the OIP clip of their sp. The reason they didn't I suppose is because they are using jumpsuits for their W.E. fp,* which worked so well for them in 2018-2019 season.

It will also be interesting to see the German teams, and the other two Canadian teams at this event. Barquero/Zandron (representing Spain) have shown that they are going to be contenders with their earlier outings this season. They train in Italy, and Zandron is from Italy, so Italian fed politics will be benefitting them as well.

ETA:
*I thought Ash/Tim had gone back to their W.E. fp from 2018-2019, but I guess not. The Camerlengo fp from last season is listed.
