Part 1 of 2

--In terms of technical skills what do you value highly in each other?
K: They both have excellent skating skills. Junya is good at coaching. He did that in Naniwa and after graduation he went there to coach skating skills.
J: I went there to train with my coach and ended up coaching students (laughs).
K: He is passionate.
M: Junya-kun can put his emotions into his skate.
K: He was not like that long time ago.
J: I couldn’t dance at all and I really hated dancing because I felt embarrassed. I moved like a long stick. But it all changed after I started to train with Hayashi sesei (Yusuke Hayashi coach). I guess it’s largely because Hayashi sensei put efforts into expressing emotions.
J: Junya has always been really good at spins. At this year’s Japanese Nationals the only skaters who got level 4s in all spins are Shoma and Junya. He thoroughly does what he should do and he has a strong foundation.
M: His performance is moving. I am not moved at all by my own performance even when I do well, but his performance totally touches my heart.
K: He is a nice captivating skater. His skating makes you want to be like him.
M: I would like to be like Junya before I retire.
K: Mitsuki’s skating is a good example to follow. His backward crossover and crossover are so good that we are told by the Federation to watch Mitsuki doing backward crossover. He was not like that many years ago, but when I noticed it, he had improved at lightning speed. He has solid skating skills. Also his jumps in combos are light and high. I admire his high level of perfection.
J: Kazuki captivates the audience. He’s been like that since he was little. He has impressed me since we were little kids because his performance engaged the judges and the audience and kept them with him. He is well liked. I envy him very much because his performances make you want to watch him regardless of whether his skate is good or bad. Mitsuki’s best quality is his tight axis among all. His rotation axis is so neat that it makes me wonder how he can rotate so well, and I’m envious of his ability to rotate so incredibly fast. Both of them can do so many things that I cannot do, and I think they are amazing.
M: Junya can skate with emotions. That is something I cannot do. I am moved watching his performance from the beginning till the end. So I’ve always watched his performances at every competition he was in, even he skated right before me. I want to be like him. I hope to be able to skate like Juna-kun. Kazuki has character. He is similar to Junya in that he can change the atmosphere of the arena the moment the music starts. Just as I had expected he received loud cheers at competitions such as Japanese Nationals. I feel that the audience cheers louder for good dancers and I’m very envious of him…It was an easy question to answer (laugh).
--Next, please review this season.
M: Neither good nor bad. My performances have been ordinary throughout the year.
(Everyone laugh)
M: My scores have been neither low nor high and stayed the same during the season.
J: Did you get depressed?
M: No, I was not depressed, because that was my normal (laughs).
K: You are something else.
J: Okay then, Kazuki.
K: Let me make it simple. I got off to a rough start. I worked on a lot of new things such as adding a different type of quad. But toward the second half of the season I was getting better. Things have never perfectly fallen into place in the SP, but I was able to do well at Inter-College Championships. Compared to the last season, it has been a more fulfilling season where I built self-confidence. I think I made progress this season.
J: This is my last year but I could not practice fully before Kinki Regionals. I did not get to practice enough during the summer vacation either and I thought it couldn’t get any worse. But after the season started I was able to train enough and I was ready for competitions. I competed with satisfying results one after another and the only remaining competitions are the National Athletic Meet and the Free Competition. At the National I want to do well in both SP and FS to win the first place with my teammate. My season is not over yet but I feel it has been good so far.

I'd ask 'kaigai no fan ni message o itadakemasen ka'? Maybe it's wrong it but should mean roughly 'would you give a message to your fans abroad'? Sorry, too lazy now to bother with switching to Japanese keyboard...

With all the excitement about his live, I forgot to say: THANK YOU, rRainbow, for your translation! :thank:
I'm really enjoying this interview, it's so heartwarming.

I LOL'd at Kazuki's 'regret' in high school :laugh2:
This bit where they talk about what they admire about each other is so sweet! :luv17:

M: His FS at Japanese Nationals was awesome.
K: For real, his FS at JNats was so good that I think he was MVP worthy (laughs), from the get-go (laughs).
M: I saw it myself, live (laughs). I was there to see him (laughs).
K: To me, he sure was the MVP.
J: I was the first to skate in both (SP and FS) (laughs).
M: Sweet memory, sweet memory (laughs).
J: My coach was laughing his head off (laughs). Hahaha! (laughs).
K: (laughs) After the competition I almost cried watching the video (laughs). I could hardly believe it, his retirement. To be honest, before (this season), Junya could rarely show his true strength in competitions. He usually came back looking worried. But during this season he was not like that at all. I could not see his performances many times because I had to skate later myself. But he looked really confident. Although I don’t know how he was feeling, that was how he looked to me. I guess some skaters finish their careers with unsatisfying results, but at JNats he was awesome and killed it in his FS. I don’t know what to say, do you?
M: True.
K: That’s so ideal. He moved people’s hearts. Well, his season is not over yet though.
M: Last season.
K: Right. I don’t think many people can finish the last season like that. Plus he nailed both programs. How nice (laughs), isn’t it?
M: Yes (laughs).
Everybody: (laughs)
M: Perhaps the only performance of Junya I missed was the SP at JNats (laughs).
K: Oh (laughs).
M: I saw all of them (laughs).
J: Because I was the first skater (laughs).
M: Yes (laughs), other than that (SP) I saw every one of them (laughs).
K: Wow (laughs) I feel perhaps you have been working so hard yourself that you could go that far. We feel emotionally connected with one another…(laughs)
M: Thanks for your warm words.
K: Indeed, I have always been following around him, like “Junya, Junyaaa.” (laughs) Ah, I didn’t know he was retiring!! (laughs)
J&M: Really? (laughs)
K: I was too preoccupied with myself. I saw his Instagram that said “It was my last competition.” I go “Really!?” Then I told him, didn’t I?
K&J: “Really? Retiring!?” (laughs)
Everybody: (laughs)
J: Heck, I’m out (laughs).
K: People my age who I know are retiring…I feel it’s so soon.
--Then we would like a message from Watanabe-san to them. I would appreciate a comment from Sumoto-san and Tomono-san to Watanabe-san!
J: I understand both of you continue skating. It’s not always fun to skate so I want you to overcome hard times and enjoy skating. I don’t know when you’ll quit, but I want you to do your best so that when you quit you can say to yourself “I have enjoyed skating.”
K: He has always been a good buddy to me and I really cannot believe this is happening. Part of me feels I should have seen more of his performances, but I had to focus on myself in competitions as we were in different groups. That said, I still have more chances to see his skate at Free Championships and such. I have always wanted to see him compete there. Seriously this has been his last and strongest season, particularly with his great FS (laughs). I have been following him for so long that I cannot believe he is retiring. I’m really grateful to him for his help on not only skating but also many other things. This, I want to say at the Free Championships (laughs).
M: It’s hard to put the thoughts into words, isn’t it.
K: Right.
M: I have been seeing his performances throughout this season, including the college evens. I can only make a short comment. I’ll also enter the National Athletic Festival and the Free Championships myself, because I really want to see the performances of retiring skaters rather than focusing on mine.
K: Rather, you don’t want to compete there.
M: I’d rather be the audience (laughs). I want to seriously watch him skate, and I want to imprint his performances into my memory so that I can be like Junya when I retire.
K: I want to burn into my memory his performances from beginning to end.

THE END

Vol 1 - Vol 3 of the interview release dates are 3/29 & 3/30, but the interview had taken place after Inter-College Championships in January, when the pandemic was not yet widespread in Japan, so the boys didn't anticipate that these events would be cancelled, unfortunately.

フリー大会 (free competitions/championships) seems to refer to domestic competitions where the participants compete only in free programs. There are a few national/local "Free competitions" in 2020:

Figure Skating Free Competition (2/28 - 3/1) in Sapporo - cancelled
Public College Free Skating Competition (3/12 - 3/15) in Kyoto - cancelled
Lilly Cup Kanagawa Figure Skating Free Championships (4/5, 4/5 & 4/11) in Yokohama - cancelled

Thank you so much, rRainbow, for the translation and the explanation about the Free championships!
I really enjoyed this interview, it's very sweet. What a shame that Junya couldn't compete one last time, but it seems he managed to have a good last season.

Did you guys see that Kazuki had another IG Live yesterday? He was jumping rope 'together' with Taichi Honda: https://twitter.com/moti54_skating/status/1255347199627726849
https://twitter.com/truffeYuzu/status/1255337154420580353
I couldn't see all of it, but poor Kazuki struggled a lot more than Taichi

Also, a kind soul translated the main points of Tuesday's IG Live:
https://privatter.net/p/5800182
Lots of really nice info, including that he keeps in touch and play games frequently with Koshiro, Sota and Shoma :luv17:
Also, this bit:
Another thing he took up is English conversation, because he wants to get better at English so he can speak normally. He says that currently he can somewhat grasp what people say to him but is not good at speaking. He says that it looks really cool when people (I think he means other Japanese skaters) can answer in English during press conferences at tournaments and he looks up to that.
I'm sure he's being a bit hard on himself, as even Misha praised his English before. But I can understand that, from a non-native speaker perspective, it's often easier to understand a language than express yourself using it. Kudos to him for wanting to improve!

Sure hope we'll get to see some "snippets" of them working on the choreo. Love this new photo.
https://twitter.com/mishageofficial/status/1256078270472179713?s=19
You are right! It seems the programme will mix comedy and drama, Misha posted a little bit of the 'comedy' part of the programme here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_oYEvNphTH/
And an IG story, which I uploaded here: https://twitter.com/KiraraChin/status/1256092277224681473

AAAAAAHHHHHH So looking forward to see this on the ice!:love::love:

What's Zoom Online Talkshow? Whatever it is, Keiji and Kazuki are participating in it in a few days! Just saw the tweet on GS Twitter train: https://twitter.com/JPlanningIntl/status/1256134753494827008

The choreo looks really fine! it looks like this is a good program choice for Kazuki!
You know what? The few seconds' choreo reminds me of Daisuke's La Strada program a lot! He had success with it, so maybe it will be the same for Kazuki!

ETA, I'd say that if Kazuki is keen on polishing his eigo, a good start would be not ignoring his eigo-speaking fans' questions. I understand he's hesitant since social media is a public space where choice of words is important, but I doubt Giu for one asks difficult questions, and also, as we say here - who doesn't try, won't learn anything :p

OMG this Zoom online talk show seems to cool! It seems fans will be able to watch for a fee, but there are only 90 places which will be decided by draw.
Here are the rules: https://twitter.com/hanageshinken2/status/1256198602860441601
Sadly, recording or reports on social media will be forbidden :sad21:
I would LOVE to watch, I would totally apply if I could understand Japanese!
The organisers already brought forwards the deadline due to 'high volume of applications': https://twitter.com/JPlanningIntl/status/1256478961522995200

In other news, apparently Kazuki got a 'Shining Appearance Award' and high praise from Tatsuki Machida on FSTV! He seemed very happy on Twitter :luv17:

@ Surimi, I agree that practice makes perfect, he should take the opportunity to practice his English with fans! I hope he'll get confident enough to do this eventually

Wait, I get the 'no recording' part, but are they really serious in that fans won't be able to share what was said even after the zoom meeting? That doesn't make much sense to me. It's not like the whole world is dying to know that skater X is choosing soundtrack from movie Y for his new program, and that skater Z gets up at 6 AM and his favorite show is AB. I don't get what they hope to achieve by blocking all reports on social media, except decreasing interest among worldwide fans who wouldn't pay for a Japanese-only zoom anyway. :confused2: As wacky as that editor of Quadruple who threw forty fits that his precious interview got translated for those who cannot speak Japanese, when he himself did nothing to gain money by having it translated and paywalled.

Hi everyone, some updates from the last couple of days:

- The organisers of the Zoom Q&A with Keiji already closed the applications and notified the draw winners. They said due to the high numbers of applications, they will put the Q&A 'on archive' - I'm assuming this means it will be available on demand for fans, most likely for a fee. I assume this is the reason they want to forbid reports on social media, to encourage people to pay... Although I agree it's a short-sighted strategy :disapp:

- Kazuki posted a story a couple of days ago of him practicing spins on land! It seems he's using some sort of covering for his shoes so he can slide on the ground: https://twitter.com/FSIgstories/status/1256439258832932869

- For those who understand Japanese, the FSTV video with Tatsuki Machida, the bit he talks about Kazuki is at 11:13: https://youtu.be/3t72GFwkamA No subtitles, unfortunately! Fuji TV also FINALLY included Kazuki in one of their 'bolero edits': https://twitter.com/Summer29child/status/1256872011562774529

- It seems Kazuki is making progress with his rope jumping skills! He said he was able to do a double jump 50 times (!) and a triple jump 3 times: https://twitter.com/naniwatomono/status/1257155362911776769

Hi everyone, it seems that Kazuki's Zoom session with Keiji yesterday was a success! :yahoo:
The organisers said they will make it available to watch on demand, but they will publish more details of how to do that.

The bad news is that I couldn't find any fan reports... But the good news is that Kazuki himself and also the organisers posted some IG stories with snippets of it!

Note he was wearing his 'ramen fool' t-shirt, from when he did the Good Morning call ABC special (same as in my profile picture) :luv17:
Also, it is me or his hair doesn't look as wild as before?
