Who remembers watching skating on ESPN in 2007? I watched the Cup of China Ladies Free tonight. I had forgotten that ESPN took up 8 percent of the vertical distance for a continuous banner of other sports news. In order to do this, they "shrank" the skaters' height by 8 percent while leaving their width the same. Making the skaters look "chunky". 
IIRC, Universal Sports did something like this but intermittantly.
