Kozuka. Yay! I am so happy for him. Happy that he delivered in the free and more than happy that they send him to Worlds. His skating skills are simply out of this world. I would give him a plain 10 for SS and straight +3 GOE on his StSq. To be honest, I don't care if he does quads as long as he simply stays on his feet and does his STSq with unique speed. Yippie, Yippie, Yippie!

I think that it was his own decision to not put his studies on hold or delay his graduation, and not his university and/or JSF not making accommodations for him. Dai and Nobu were also students of KanDai when they were still competitive skaters (and Dai, Nobu and Tatsu are all graduating next spring). For sure, if Tatsuki had asked, he'd be given reprieve or considerations if he asked for them (from KanDai at least; he's a prized skater and he brings honor and fame to the university); this only shows that he just prioritizes his studies over his skating career. (Mind you, this isn't a swipe at Dai and Nobu's choices -- different people have different priorities!)
Very mature approach.

Like you, I also got the feeling that he was considering continuing until Pyeongchang, but I guess his recent results in TEB, GPF and Nats must have driven him to choose his pursuit of furthering his education over his skating career.
I think maybe he realized that balancing studies with elite sport is hard (tesis part) and it will only get harder if he is going for graduate/research program, so thinking that his skating will continue to suffer decided to stop. Not a bad choice, a sad one for the skating worlds yes.

You guys maybe right. He chose this during the season... we can't know the reason as long as he doesn't explain it but at least I'm happy as he seemed to be satisfied as he gave out all what he could (I think he said so in the interview yesterday)

I wonder one thing, on Japanese wikipedia it says his exhibition number for this year is 'Je te veux' by Elic Satie choreographed by himself. But he did The East of Eden in SA. So has he ever shown this exhibition number? I was actually very looking forward to see this collaboration of Tatsuki and Satie.

I am depressed. I can't believe this. After Nobu and Dai, now Machida. He is my favourite, more than Yuzu because I liked better his programs since he broke through with Fire bird. And I wanted him to win Worlds last year, he was so close and he seemed so motivated to challenge Yuzu in the next years. I feel like crying, I have exactly the same state of mind like last year when Nobu retired exactly in the same moment, after winning bronze at GPF. No, no, no. I just don't get it, I want to see his programs at worlds:((((. At least I get to see Mura, but I wanted to see both of them. I am happy for Kozuka but I can't understand him. Machida touched my soul.

I do hope he still skates on ice shows though :( Just when he was gaining momentum, he suddenly retires! It's very heartbreaking.

Judging from the new posts at FSU, it seems Tatsuki's decision might have been influenced by financial issues. :( His family wasn't very rich, and his mother recently fell ill while working two jobs to support Tatsuki's skating. This might be why he wants to graduate and start working as soon as possible...
Daisuke and Nobunari could afford graduating later - they became well known in their late teens; they were Tokubetsu Kyouka Senshu through all of their senior careers (more financial support) and were sent to more competitions (more prize money). Plus, Daisuke appeared in advertisements and Nobu was invited to a lot of TV shows and worked as an assistant coach, so they had some income of their own to support their skating. Judging from their interviews, they valued their education very much (especially Nobunari, who had considered retiring from figure skating altogheter to become a teacher), they just could afford to postpone it.

Luckily, it sounds as Tatsuki plans to remain involved in the sport. He said he wants to work as coach and choreographer in the future. I hope this means he'll appear in the shows as well :)

Could you also post this in the Machida´s retirement thread. I think is important for people to understand Machida´s posible motivations.

Hope his mother health improve.

I've been depressed at his retirement and now heartbroken over the speculation that he could've not proceeded his career as a competitive skater because of financial problems and his mother's health. I thought he would be funded enough but well...Thank you for the info again. I hope I see him soon in the near future and his mother get well. He has immense talents, so he will be missed.

Whaaaaat??! :jaw:

Machida  can't believe this...

Neither Shoma or Machida... It's insane. Hopefully Mura regains from and I'm glad he has another chance at Worlds along with Kozuka who had a solid skate (but his quad is so unreliable he'll get hammered at Worlds!).

I can't believe Machida isn't going though... If you look back to his first GP event, people were touting him as this year's World champion. I understand he has personal stuff but damn, he at least could have medalled (barring a meltdown like here and the GPF).

I wish they'd send Machida/Mura/Kozuka to 4CC for a skate off at least.

Machida chose to decline his world spot. He was initially chosen for the team, but announced his retirement afterwards so I don't think a skate off at 4CC would have changes his mind.

i think the opposite, i think he had more challenges in his life than mura(honestly dont know much about his struggles , correct me if i m wrong), esp this year and he knows what despair is , he shows all kinds of emotions during his program, remember his 2012 worlds performance? his intensity and despair, he is able to reflect his life experiences to his performances i think, he is so versatile, maybe because he wasnt never 100% this year he wasnt able to perform it to his full potential and its understandable, but i believe it suits him well more than mura :) :p

Thank you for your response. Yes, I am aware of his life threatening experiences in 2011 tsunami/earthquake and 2014 accident. I admire his bravery how he coped with such a disaster that he doesn't have any control of. With all due respect, I did not mean he is lacking tragic life experiences. It was about his skating style that is light and lyrical to portray a character of despair, darkness, seclusion, etc. (sorry, I was not clear in my post.) True, he did not perform 100% up to his potential as you said, but his emotion and presentation was almost perfect at national. But I felt like a tenor sings baritone. After watching the POTO in New York few weeks ago, I just felt there is a depth of character which combined with the music gave me another dimension to understand the story and character. It was totally different experience than just listening to the music. In terms of visual realization of the character on the ice, I prefer Mura's skating style and presence. Well,, I guess I like the convincing character on the ice; Fernandez to Figaro, So Youn to Juliet, and Yulia to a little girl in a red coat.

These two are so NOT convincing...

Judging from the protocols, the judges seem to have been quite strict regarding edge calls. Most of the top men (except Shoma and Sota) got edge calls in their LP.
I find the tech specialist strange in this event - how could she be strict to most men but lenient to Uno in both SP and LP? Uno flutzes and the tech specialist just closed her eyes on this but gave most other men edge calls :disapp:

Okay.....this was not what I expected to see when I came back :jaw: So many feelings....so little words are forming.

1. Congrats to Kozuka for making the WT :cheer2:
2. Did not expected that from Machida....I thought he might have considered it but thought it would be after the Worlds this season...:drama:
3. Congrats to Mura for making the WT  Surprised they went with Mura and not Shoma as the alt though
4. Happy that Murakami made the 4CC team.

Not sure of the idea of sending Mura to replace Machida at Worlds... The team is now made of Hanyu-kozuka-Mura and these last two are not really consistent by looking at their last competitions... The goal is to keep 3 spots for Japanese men for next year so It will not be more dramatic than it is this year. We just have to hope that Hanyu wins another time the world title or that if he finishes lower, that the ranking of Kozuka or Mura in addition at the one of Hanyu is 13 or lower! Shoma is way more consistent than Kozuka or Mura looking at his last competitions and being a skater I know that consistency is the key of success. My team for Senior worlds would have been : Hanyu, Uno and kozuka (because kozuka finishes two years in a row 3rd at nationals and still show he can do it at the right time when it counts). By having Hanyu and shoma in the same team, there would be some kind of relief and confidence for Japanese men's spots for next year, and kozuka showed that now he deserves it and that he can pull himself up after a bad short program. And, entering for worlds, Kozuka will be seen as an underdog and we saw it often, when the pressure is off, better the skate is! But, there is many way to see this situation, Mura deserves it anyway and he made his proof this year by winning a senior grand prix and by qualifying at the GPF which is really difficult. I just want Japan to perform well and keep their 3 spots for next year! :)
