I have finished Gracie's audio book and am impressed by her openness, the courage to reveal herself and to ruthlessly judge those close to her but also herself.

If it wasn't for chapter 17... sorry but I can't get over it. It's one thing that she dedicates Chapter 17 to John Coughlin, his favorite number, she seems to owe him a lot and that needs to be respected and she lost him as a friend tragically. But Gracie's 'if' sentence, about what Ashley Wagner, among others, is accusing him, leaves me with more than just mixed feelings... with this sentence, perhaps unintentionally, she questions the credibility of his victims. Since she is also a rape victim and knows how important it is to believe victims, I would have liked her to deal with this topic differently.

Nevertheless, I wish Gracie only the best, lots of love and peace with herself and the skating world.
I understand this on some level. However I tried to put myself in her shoes and say "What if my best friend and/or the person I was in love with was accused of doing these terrible things?" I'd have a very hard time believing it.

Speaking of Ashley Wagner, wasn’t her direct intervention with usfsa at Champs Camp a major reason why Gracie was sent to rehab? Maybe i was reading too quickly, but i didn’t see any mention of that.

I was watching for that to be mentioned, and I didn't see it, either.

Ashley noticed that Gracie did not seem right, and told officials, but no treatment was initiated as a result.

[In 2016] Wagner alerted a skating official that Gold seemed unwell and needed help. Sam Auxier, the president of U.S. Figure Skating at the time, said the association, which makes licensed psychologists and other specialists available to athletes dealing with mental health problems, had acted promptly. But attempts to assist Gold, he said, went nowhere.

Gracie entered treatment in 2017 :

Two members of the camp’s support staff soon approached Gold, persuading her to delay her career and seek treatment. Within a month, she entered an inpatient program for eating disorders, its cost covered by U.S. Figure Skating.

(The NYT article, BTW, was written by Karen Crouse, who assisted Gracie with her book)

This actually is the very first time I see Gracie happy. I am left in impression she really enjoys to give interviews- good for her.
I would say Gracie is outstandingly eloquent- both in the spoken word and in the written word. Perhaps she has rather to persuade the field of creative writing or journalism, the field where the spoken word is a tool of success. I do say in a very positive way not negative.

I am very happy that Gracie's book is being received well. I hope that those struggling may learn from her struggles. I hope that Gracie is finding this a cathartic experience that relieves a weight from her soul. She is a beautiful and intelligent woman with a lot to offer inside and outside of skating. My only critique - love yourself enough to cut out the vaping before it does too much damage.

I just finished it today. I took it slowly; I've had a number the same challenges as Gracie. I found it to be a revelation. It was so interesting being a fly on the wall of her mind rewatching some of her programs. One of the things that impressed me most was the degree to which Gracie is literary. It wasn't as consisant as, say, a novel but she really has a knack for it. And she can be really really funny. I'm happy that the book is selling well and being so well received. This should give her a nice piece of change in the bank to cushion her and allow her to continue to do whatever she feels drawn to without having to be concerned with going broke. And maybe she can find a larger living space. Onward, Gracie.

I was also wondering whether or not this would make a good film. It wouldn't be the naturally darkly comic trainwreck of a story as I Tonya. Unless it were fictionalized but why bother? The actual story is compelling enough. If I were writing the script, I would limit the time frame to Nats and World's where she finished 4th. Maybe add flashbacks. I do hope she gets a film sale with front end sharing of the profits.

I finally finished the audiobook today. Overall, I enjoyed (is that the right word) hearing her story, even the dark stuff, which there was quite a bit of. I really feel like I know who the real Gracie is now, warts and all and have a deep respect for her to share her story and want to make a change for the next generation.

It's funny, when Gracie was at the top of her game during 2014-2016, I could not connect with her programs or her skating. Of course, I admired her lutz toe and her technical ability but I connected much more with Ashley's skating and performance ability. Now I understand why, because she wasn't showing her authentic self on the ice. It was only after she started sharing her mental health struggles and mounted her comeback, did I truly root for her since she was being authentic.

So much so that I was super annoyed with Ashley during Gracie's SP at Skate America in 2022 when she was standing right behind my last row seat yapping away with someone while Gracie was skating at her first International Grand Prix in years. I never thought I would be in that situation when I had last seen both of them live at Boston Worlds in 2016.

Would be very very cautious because of the Coughlin thing. I'm not sure Hollywood have any writers who could balance Gracie's view of him carefully enough not to provoke a storm which would not do her emotional health any good at all. I'm sorry if that seems harsh, but we've all seen the backlash when a film or TV series handles abuse badly...

I’ve not seen a film or even a tv show based on a book that included everything from said book. It’s not a short book so condensing it down to 2-3 hours would require leaving large parts out (I think. I’m not a script writer)

That part could be left out without compromising the arch of the story or the overall thesis. Issue resolved (as far as the film goes).

I think it would be possible to handle the Coughlin situation in a movie. The focus would not be on Coughlin but on Gracie. How does one react to accusations of terrible misdeeds on the part of a friend. Do you deny it? Do you turn against your one-time friend as a Jekyl-and-Hyde monster? Is there a path available that eases the emotional burden (Gracie's, that is)?

At the same time the topic of abusive power-imbalance situations in figure skating and similar endeavors could be introduced and not swept under the rug.
