Yesterday I translated the posts by Russian skaters. Many of them tell about their family members who participated in WW II - maybe it can be interesting for you.

May 9 is The Victory Day
we celebrate the end of The Great Patriotic War (that part of WW II which took place on the Soviet lands)

When I was a kid, I knew this Day was very important for our country.
Now I feel this Day is really important for me. It is the day when I feel all the people are my family.

You can see the translated posts here (many posts, scroll down):

May 9 is a big day in Europe. Here, in N America it is mentioned, but that's all. I am Canadian (European background) and my family were all involved in WWII -Europe, one way or another. My grand parents even had both world wars in their lives. Figure skaters have the means to do something nice about this., though the Covid 19 rules might prevent any action.

Is it? Because i'm in central Europe ( Balkan) and May 9 is just may 9, a normal day here. May 1 is holiday and may 25th was once celebrated to ( Youth day), but not anymore.

I expected to see many posts from our skaters on May 9. There are many posts indeed.

as for skating...
we even have videos like this one
(these songs are about love, actually)
(I also like this video, because it has the end of this number: in the end Tikhonov takes off the soldier's blouse)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfthve6Hzw0

The first song from that video (when we see only Alexei Tikhonov) is "Dark Is The Night" - it is translated to English
the lyrics are below the video - you can press "SHOW MORE"

ANZAC Day is actually on 25[SUP]th[/SUP] April, marking the anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings in 1915. But, it is not officially marked in the British Isles the way it is in Australia and New Zealand.

In the British Isles, the bank holiday for May Day (as Labour Day is more commonly called in these islands) isn’t actually held on 1[SUP]st[/SUP] May. It is instead held on the first Monday in May, so as to ensure a long weekend. However, last year it was announced that for 2020, the UK was moving the May Day bank holiday to Friday 8[SUP]th[/SUP] May, so that it could be used to mark the 75[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary of VE Day.

The difference in dates between us and Russia is all down to time zones. The ceasefire didn't come into force until 23:01 CET on 8[SUP]th[/SUP] May 1945, which meant that it was already the wee small hours of the 9[SUP]th[/SUP] in Russia.

VE Day isn't normally officially marked in the British Isles. But because this year is a significant anniversary, it was this time.

That said, in the Channel Islands, there is a bank holiday on 9[SUP]th[/SUP] May every year for Liberty Day, to mark the anniversary of the day the German occupation officially ended in 1945. The result is that these islands do normally have two bank holidays in early May.

Because Southern Ireland didn't take part in WW2, they just had their normal bank holiday on the first Monday in May.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

We have two days may 5th, the day of the Prague uprising, and may 8th, when the German Instrument of Surrender was signed. It was just before midnight, so thanks to the timeshift in Moscow it was may 9th already.

Though in my country it is a subject of the political battles. During the communist era may 9th was celebrated, since 1990 we started to celebrate may 8th. Now, many polititians battle over how properly it should be reminded (many of the current political representatives seek the way how to erase as much of the soviet contribution to the defeat of nazi Germany and liberation of my country as possible). It is completely distasteful.

Yes, we were! I ashamed of myself because of it. :( We were the last nation which supported Hitler and the nazis! :dev2: But to 1989 we celebrated 9 May, because of the soviet comrades  We have rarely had good decisions and good leaders who could know who are our friends...Look at our leaders in these days...:slink:
If you have time..look at this! this is the consequence of our bad decisions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEIy9JtYK-s and this is the reason why we have many nationalists :palmf: the lost is too huge! Even Germany wasn't punished so much as we was. Millions of hungarians live out of the borders..

The day highly depends on the country, as already mentioned here is on the 25th of April.

This is a bit of a political topic, cause in Russia it is celebrated perhaps way more than other countries, probably the biggest celebration throughout the year, because it is also used for political reasons, to show the strenght of the country in a way.

Here it's more about remembering the losses and the arrival of the americans.

In Greece, regarding the WWII, we celebrate the day we enter the war as a holiday.

I'm no specialist on hungarian history, but I know the main course, after all, the history of Bohemia and the history of Hungary were loosely connected in wars and peace. We waged wars, we signed treaties, many hungarian princesses became wives of the bohemian princes and kings. And, of course, then there were Habsburgs. Maybe we should still unite against Austria :laugh2:

Yeah, we are almost neighbors and we were together under the Habsburg rule for many years. Hungary from 1667 to 1918. Many people think we were happy in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867. But we didn't.

BTW I like Austria ,Czech Republic and Prague so much now!

The only war related day we celebrate is the day we broke up with Yugoslavia. It was a nasty break up...

Bohemia and Moravia were under Habsburgs since 1526. Worst consequence of the battle of Mohácz, where Louis II (king of Bohemia and Hungary that time) has died. Czech general estates then elected for Ferdinand I, the holy roman emperor. Worst decision any czech representative has ever done...

BTW as a kid I very liked hungarian movie Egri csillagok (The Stars of Eger) about the siege of the Eger fortress by Turks in 1552. I like this kind of historical movies :luv17:
