Yes, every venue in the world is supposed to get permission for use of YMCA. Getting permission doesn’t always mean a payment is required. In the case of a charity event or low-level competition, very likely not. But for use of it for something like a movie or TV special, very likely yes.

Obviously, there are many usage situations that fall between those examples. The key is getting permission. For every use.
Good grief they would have to have multiple people working full time just to approve or deny use. They asked an American politician to not use it. Said person continues to use it. They've sent a cease and desist letter along with several other musicians, but YouTube doesn't seem to have a problem airing the stuff. But Goddess forbid a skating competition that several thousand people want to watch uses it. That's a problem.

I don't know the YMCA story :) but I believe it's a separate problem.

Musicians register with an organization that aims to collect money on their behalf. In Canada it's SOCAN/En tandem. In the USA, I believe it is ASCAP and BMI. Venues have to purchase a license to play music. The fees are then split between musicians who are registered with ASCAP for instance. As mentioned, venues hosting those small competitions would already have to have a license, even to just play any music during a free skating session or holding the competition. There is perhaps an add-on fee for streaming, but again, these licenses are not cost prohibitive to start with.

There are a few issues I can see in figure skating. Some composers/ musicians, may not be part of these organizations. Some composers/musicians may not want their music to be used or to be altered (cut). But in general, musicians do not have the time nor the will to investigate every single use of their music and that's exactly why, they get small royalties through these organizations. Keep in mind that there is a difference for commercial use of music, which is NOT the case in figure skating.

Some musicians may feel strongly about their work being used politically. That's a completely different situation. It is the same as well, when music is used commercially. In movies, permission/dues have to be obtained/granted. If a musician wishes to make a recording of a work that is not public domain, they also have to get a permission and pay a fee. However, figure skaters do not use music commercially. They do not need to ask a musician authorization and pay a fee. It's covered by the venues blanket licenses.

When I see it struck it's by Sony Music Entertainment. Which could be a lot of artists.

This promises to be a nice event. So many interesting pairs. Curious to see Hanns/Neudecker. Has anyone heard anything from Digerness/Sadusky this season?

I ordered him to not break up with her and he promised to obey my instructions.:rofl:
I'd also like to note that he was one of three current skaters to show up to FOFS breakfast.
On a more serious note, they petitioned due to injury into a slot at Nationals this year Now I'm wondering if it is an injury issue.

Nothing from him since January.

Nor from her.

Thanks for posting. . I really like this team a lot tho I know she had injury issues in the past. Look forward to seeing them again so 🤞 they will surface soon!

Draw for juniors just finished

1 - Enkina/Kovalenko
2 - Fletcher / felberbaum
3 - Carpenter/Maravilla

The Israeli team's speed is really good. Not much difference in height

Weak jumping skills for Fletcher/Felberbaum. Never saw them land any jump well during practice ice

Carpenter/Maravilla are strong single skaters (both in National Devt Team as singles) but still needs work on pair elements. Maravilla wearing a thumb brace.

Canadian team gave me a fright. The girl fell on the lift — after falling on side by side jump, and a freak fall in the transition, and then that scary lift. They stopped and judges talked to them. Went to the coach and decided to continue. Oh man, seeing lifts like that reminds you of how pairs can be scary

In the junior, the score announced for the Israel team was much lower; seems like they didn’t count the lift. But when results came out, seems like the lift was counted and they got the top score

Is there any live updating scoring page? The one liked above does still show starting order.
